Hello moms
I have a 7 year old autistic son that has been under the care of a DAN doctor that has helped me implement many positive changes in his health. Last week the doctor recommended that I consider getting him tested for heavy metal toxicity (appart from the hair testing).
Now this therapy is the most invasive regimen that I am yet to consider on my son , and I am very uneasy about it.I have spend numerous hours researching it and the results are so conflicting. For some patients it made a world of difference , and the parents swear by it , while others suffered side effects .
As with any therapy there are of course risks involved, I am very nervous about potential side effects , and about him being able to communicate to me if he is experiencing any body aches , feelings of nausea etc, since he is speech delayed.
So I turn to you fellow moms for some much needed advise . Have any of you had your children go through this treatment and what have your experiences been.
I know this is the only accurate way to see how much heavy metal his body excretes, but can not help being concerned about what it would do to him if I was to choose that route.

thank you ahead of time for your answers

There is no scientific support for chelation therapy as a treatment for autism. This treatment is unethical for medical professionals to use and dangerous for their patients.

The only valid medical use for this treatment is for people known to have heavy metal poisoning. The side effects include: A burning sensation at the site of delivery into the vein is common, fever, headache, nausea, stomach upset, vomiting, convulsions, bone marrow depression, hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory arrest, and hypocalcemia. Other concerns include kidney failure, which can require permanent life-limiting and expensive dialysis, or cause death. 30 deaths have been recorded, including several children.

This is so dangerous. I am glad you think that you have seen improvement, but you should know that this is not standard care and that the placebo effect is enourmous for parents who truly want to see progress. The only people I know who have benefitted from the therapy you have gotten so far, or the therapy you are considering, are the people who pocket your money.

I do know many people who have spent this money, thought the were seeing terrific results, and tried to convince me to try it for my child too. They are back on the standard care wagon, with nothing to show for thier trouble excpet wasted time and money lost, and the progress they thought they saw has totally evaporated. Everyone I know of was lucky though, their children were not harmed in the process.

I hope that your child gets treatment that helps and that they improve in the long term, and that they are not harmed by what ever care you choose. Standard care offeres no cure, no unbeleivable reversals, no quick fix. What standard care offers is slow and predicatable progress and improvement, and a lot of hard work for parents, child, and therapists. I really wish that there was a cure, but there just isn't.

Be very careful with your child, and your money.

Good luck,
M.

As the mother of a 7 year old autistic son, we explored this type of therapy, but in the end decided against it. We had a doctor that recommended having our son tested, we did, and it was high. Chelation is based on the premise that the body is not excreting these heavy metals, but they showed up in his hair - which, to me, meant he was excreting it. Having said that, every autistic child is different in how they respond to the multitude of available treatments. Some parents swear by chelation, but I felt uncomfortable. There are chelation diets using epsom salts and Vit C. I don't know much about it, but I have read about these herbal chelation diets. Maybe you can explore that option first. I felt like my little boys body went through so much that I could not expose him to more. When you look at the chelation statistics, it is also hard to distinguish the exact benefits of it because most of the kids were on special diets, vitamin supplements, and various therapy programs.
Luckily our boy was diagnosed at a young age and received nearly 25 hours a week of therapy from the state and I was in a position to continue for another 30 hours per week. Personally, I felt that most of our success came from GF/CF diet, the occupational therapist, and floor time therapy. Don't give up hope but don't let this rule your life. I wish you the best outcome for whatever path you choose.
Good luck,
C.

I don't know a whole lot about it, but have heard from my acupuncturist that it is a very intense treatment that is really h*** o* the body and she thinks that it is way overused. Good luck!

The best advice I can give you is to pray and ask God for some true guidance. If you believe pray with your heart and you will be heard. As a mother when I simply can not get answers I simply pray!

The best of luck to you and your precious son.

I don't know much about this medical procedure but have you looked into a good homeopathic/herbalist? My sis. is in Utah but has helped a lot of people cleanse their bodies of heavy metals with diet, homeopathic drops and some bath you can do where you can actually SEE the metals as a ring around the tub when you drain it. If you want more info, msg. me and I can get it. Homeopathic has never harmed anyone although I know some overdose on herbs has.

I know someone who had a heart attack very soon after chelation therapy, I wouldn't do it myself.
