Me and my husband have agreed to the terms of our divorce. Attorneys want to charge us $1500 to write up the divorce and file it for us. Has anyone done it themselves. If so how? We would like to save money. We want to file in Dupage or Will county.

The cost was around $170 plus filing. They mail you standard forms, you fill in the blanks with specific info and mail them back. They come back to you all typed up, you file them yourself with the court and all done.
IF it's accepted in your state, not all states accept it. Good luck.

Around here, you can go to the county courthouse and get the paperwork and instructions on how to file for a divorce on your own. I think info is also available online, but I've found it helpful to talk to a clerk, who can often give advice on how to get through the process as smoothly as possible.

Yes, my ex and I did it ourselves. Actually I did it in California, he was living elsewhere at the time. I sent him the forms and he signed them. It cost about three hundred, I think.

If you both agree on all the terms, regarding money, possessions and kids, you don't need to involve attorneys. However, that assumes that you trust him to follow through on the terms the two of you have decided upon.

I don't know about Dupage or Will counties, specifically.

Many states allow you to file for a dissolution of marriage, here in AK it was around $150 when I checked a few years ago. You just print the paper work off from online and fill it out and file it at the court house. If the terms are accepted by a judge who reviews it then it is all over in about 30 days, if the judge thinks the terms are not fair then he or she may order mediation to fix the issues.

When I got divorced after 7 years of marriage, my x and I agreed on EVERYTHING before we even went in. I agreed to let him have the house in exchange for me not paying child support (tho in hind sight I didn't know what this all meant, never explained to me how much I was giving up), we didn't have nice cars so we each took one. He agreed to pay my few bills I had off. It was a $99 divorce from a paralegal service. This was 19 years ago and I was criticized and condemned by many but for me at the time it was what was needed. I had to get away from my abusive x. He was a great dad to our son but never learned how to treat a woman. He just divorced for the 4th time.
