Diflucan and Breastfeeding

Hi Ladies,
Sorry if the is TMI... but I have a yeast infection. YUCK! I am also still breastfeeding my 14 mo old three times a day. (Really two the third one is just a comfort suckle.) Im really senesitive to the over the counter vaginal meds so my midwife called in a prescription for diflucan for me. She was kind of ambigous about whethr or not is was safe during breast feeding. I have a done a lot of research and the opinions go in either direction. What I was wondering is if any of you have taken diflucan and continued to nurse?

Thank you.

Have you considered cutting out sugar to combat the yeast infection? It's very difficult to do, but can be very effective.

Hi A.!

I took it for a fungal infection on the skin while my son was nursing, and it was totally fine. No lasting effects for either of us. I also took a liver support that my naturopath recommended and my MD was in favor of. My MD also tested my liver every so often, as I had to take the Diflucan for several weeks. Both my doctors were completely unconcerned about it with nursing. Good luck with your infection!

Best,
L.

The only medication that would not be good for nursing are those for chemo treatment. Many doctors will tell you to pump and dump, but then, 99.9% of doctors know nothing about breastfeeding.

You are safe to nurse with Diflucan!

ive never done it but you could try calling a la leche league they deal with lots of breast feeding moms or call a breast feeding coach in your area if they have them., or if your area has wic ask them they might be able to help you

It is frequently used to treat thrush in the breast tissue of nursing moms and should be safe to take.
Another option would be to try frequent vinegar solution sitzbaths and yogurt-tampons, a midwife once recommended this to me and works like a charm for me.

Hi A., I took Diflucan while breastfeeding my 2 month old for almost a month. My doctor thought I had thrush on my nipples (I had all the symptoms) and everything else we tried didn't work. I finally went to a naturapathic doctor and he figured out I actually had an infection (due to cracking and difficulty latching), not thrush. Long story short I took 21 days of Diflucan I didn't need to. I saw no side effects in my daughter and I read somewhere that they give diflucan in way larger doses than they would get in your breastmilk to infants before they have surgeries and yeast infections. That comforted me. I was crazy upset to be on meds since I don't even take Tylenol usually but so far I can say my baby was none the worse. All the doctors are really vague about whether it's safe or not. My naturopatic dr said Diflucan really works great, on YEAST! I hope you get better soon. RB

My daughter got thrush in her mouth, and nystatin wouldn't touch it. She gave it to me and we passed it back and forth for a while, and her doctor put her on diflucan. But I kept getting it. So finally I went to my doctor and got a prescription for diflucan for me. Cured everything. She was 2 months old. So I'd say do it. It will pass to her, but it's not like you are doing it for weeks and months. She needs a healthy mamma.

I was on difulcan for 28 days when they were treating me for thrush and everything was fine. i am still breastfeeding my son and that was a year ago.
