Diarrhea Help!

Hi Moms,
I had my son 6 weeks ago by c-section and since then I have had diarrhea every day. My OB put me on some heavy duty antibiotics to make sure it's not a bacterial infection. He has also referred me to a gastroenterologist that I will see in three weeks if the antibiotics don't work. In the mean time, do you guys know of anything natural/home remedies to help me? The BRAT diet has definitely not helped. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

For kids the pedialite works and the doc told me also gatorade helps both kids adn adults. For me i just go straight for immodium. I had some problems like that after my first c-section. It took a huge toll on my physically when i had my first kid and a while to recover ( about a yr) fully.
Also, iron really helps me get stopped up. The prenatals pills are good for that.

First, the antibiotics probably made the diarrhea worse.
Second, you will have to try a clear liquid diet for about 24-48 hours to give your intestines a rest.
Third, do the BRAT diet after the clear liquid diet. It's not working right now b/c your large intestine is irritated and not working properly, you need to give it time to heal before you introduce food again.
Fourth, after a day or two on the BRAT diet, you can introduce yoghurt, but no other dairy, and no high fiber foods or nuts/seeds.

Once you have a few regular bowel movements, you can introduce more high fiber foods and more protein. I deal with diarrhea every time me or my kids have to take an antibiotic, and this schedule works for us every time.

I would head for the health food store and get some acidopholus, it helps to regulate the flora in your gut. It should help slow down the diahrrea, which is probably not being helped my the meds. Also, I would maybe eat yogurt, I've never heard of the BRAT diet, so I'm not sure whether or not it's a good idea. Just remember that whatever you pick up to try, if it's non-medicinal/herbal remedies you need to call the pharmacy and make sure that it's safe to have with your antibiotics. While the people at the health store are excellent resources, they aren't pharmaceutically trained and won't be abreast of all medicial complications.

Good luck and let us know if you find something that works!

I am not sure what exactly the BRAT diet is but if you are eating fruit other then bananas...you are probably going to have a hard time regulating yourself...raisins, apples, prunes, greasy foods all loosen your bowels. Lean meat, veggies, nuts and a great fiber supplement will regulate your bowels. Sorry your going through this...especially with a new beep beep aw congrats on your new addition.

This may not help, but I had the same problem for 3 months this spring/summer. I did not have a baby recently either. Imodium would help for a couple hours and then back to the bathroom I'd go. After a lot of investigation with Dr., Chiropractor, taking acidophilous pills etc. I ran out of diet soda and couldnt get to the store for a couple of days. It cleared up and came back right after a trip to the store. Turns out, after a couple of years of drinking stuff with aspertame in it, my system can no longer tolerate it. Try the acidophilous to replace the good bacteria the antibiotics are killing (or yogurt) and good luck.

He put you on antibiotics- and then wonders why you have diarrhea- he needs to go back to school! Now he'd send you to another doctor- and be careful you'll end up with even more drugs. Crazy.
You killed off all the friendly bacteria in your intestine and it needs to be re- populated.
Lots of acidophulus, and probably bifidus. I like Simplexity and their products best.
Cheese and rice are natural things that slow down diarrhea, but re populating your intestine is the answer.
best, k

you probably have diarrhea b/c a c section is major surgery. Your body is going through major changes and freaking out. Are you nursing? That should help regulate yourself. Get off the antibiotics and get to nursing (if you're not). Also, there is this stuff called Kuzu you can get in the health food store, also called Kudzu. It's a root and very strong in strengthening your digestive tract. Mix 2 heaping tablespoons into a cup with some good (not tap) water and stir. Then mix it in a pot with about a cup of fresh apple juice (freshly made would be ideal) or some bancha (Japanese twig tea) and stir constantly over a flame till it starts to boil, bubble and thicken. Let it cool and sip while warm. It's also great for fevers.
What foods are you eating? Eat NO dairy, no flours and no processed foods. Eat simple: fresh whole grains, lightly steamed veg, make some miso soup too, stuff like that. Chew carefully too.

For some reason, I can't see the other 9 answers before I post this, so forgive me if it's a repeat, but have you tried PRObiotics? You can get them from yogurt or ask your pharmacist. That should do the trick.
