My 6 month old daughter has what appears to be a rash but not quite a diaper rash. she has a few little bumps, can anyone tell me what this means? i would just take her to the doc but i don't have insurance, things are a little tough right now. if anyone knows please help. I have been using corn starch on her forever because she used to get terrible diaper rashes, I've tried Vaseline, triple paste, and butt paste. I don't know what to do and I'm very concerned about it.

What can I do next?

It could also be folliculitis (sp?) which is infected hair follicles (I know, she won't have hair there for a while, but the follicles still exist!) This happened to my DD around that age, from chafing from the diapers. Neosporin clears it up. GL!

It could be a yeast infection (very common at this age- but NOT to be treated the same way adults treat yeast infections). When I called in and told my daughter's pediatrcian what the rash looked like they were able to call in a topical cream to apply twice daily and it cleared up quickly.

Its probably a small yeast issue. Lamisil cream will fix it, dont rub it in her privates just the outside where the rash is.

I'm a grandmother of 6(4 girls and 2 boys). I believe in using natural remedies and they work! For the diaper rash which is actually a form of yeast I use Liquid Chlorophyll. First make sure the area is clean then soak a cotton ball with chlorophyll and apply on the skin. It is a green food and yes it will stain so be careful when applying to have a towel that you don't mind messing up. Do this 3 times a day until symtoms are gone. Also, I put just a little 1/8 teaspoon in some juice and let them drink it once a day. Cleaning from the inside out. You can purchase the Liquid Chlorophyll at any Health Food Store (Whole Foods, Central Market etc.) The reason that the Chlorophyll works is that it overides the bad bacteria in your body and inables your immune system to do it's job. Works for Adults as well.

Sounds like a yeist infection. My daughter gets them fairly often. use some lotromin cream on her about 4 times a day along with desitin original. It should clear up in a few days, but keep using the lotromin for a few extra days to be sure it's cleared up.
It's common among babies and nothing to worry about.

It might be a yeast infection. My daughter gets one every time she is getting a new tooth. Our doctor told us to use Lotrimin on it twice a day (we try to do it at bedtime and right before she goes to daycare). It works really well and the rash looks better within a day or so.

Good morning, You have some great advice. Aquaphor is great we use in in NICU. But it may be a yeast infection in that case you would need to use Miconazole or some other anti fungal cream . If it is bacterial adding some white vinegar to her bath and let her soak in it and then pat dry will help. Since you do not have health insurance I would like to let you know about Plano Children s medical clinic it has hours open in the evenings for family's with out insurance and will see your child without charge and will provide medication also with out charge. It is staffed by local pediatricians that
volunteer there time to treat those uninsured.
http://www.plano-cmc.org/ It is a wonderful clinic. I would also let your regular physician know that you are without insurance and they may help you out. Good luck.
Sorry I just checked out the web site they now charge $5 for non insured children for the evening clinic on Wednesdays. Shot clinics are held the 2nd Saturday of each month Sept. - May at no charge. It is important to keep up her immunizations and they can get very costly.

There are basicly 4 reasons your skin can be red or irritated.

Reason for rash/non-rx treatment

Sensitive skin/aquaphor (NOT vaseline)
Bacterial infection/antibotic ointment like neosporin
allergy/hydracortisone cream
fungal infection/antifungal cream like lotrimin

One of these will improve her condition. Even if it doesn't make it all the way better, you'll know what the problem is.

My son had a fungal infection on the back of his knees. The lotrimin improved it a bunch, but wouldn't knock it out. When I went to the Dr. I explained why I thought it was fungal and they gave me a strong Rx and it was gone in a few days. Usually you don't need to jump up to a Rx-you can just treat it at home.

Good luck.

My daughter was allergic to something in her diapers. They caused a rash all over, but especially around her tummy where the diaper was tighter on her skin. At first I didn't know what was causing the rash, so I tried different creams (even prescription). Nothing helped so I decided to try cloth diapers. The rash cleared up quickly! So I switched to cloth and I also use seventh generation chlorine free diapers. We haven't had any more problems.

You might change diapers and/or wipes to see if she has become allergic to them. If she isn't running a fever and isn't any fussier than normal, I would hold off taking her to the doctor unless it gets alot worse or starts oozing or bleeding.

I'm a BIG fan of aquaphor but it is pricier than Vaseline. Mainly because my kids cried and cried when I put the other diaper rash creams like desitin or butt paste on it. Aquaphor ALWAYS got rid of the regular diaper rash. And it doubled as moisturizer for dry skin. But since you've been treating it for several days without it getting better you're dealing with a fungal rash (aka yeast infection) get some monistat 7 day cream. Generic brands are fine. You're looking for 2% Miconazole Nitrate. Don't get the 3 day brand b/c you get a tiny little tube of the external cream. I don't use the foot cream b/c they only have 1%. Thoroughly clean and pat dry the area. Apply cream liberally and rub it in a little on all effected areas with your clean finger. It takes a few days to a week or 2 depending on the severity to go away. My daughter tends to get a yeast infection after going number 2 so I know how frustrating it is. Good Luck.

Took my 8 month old granddaughter to the doctor with the same thing today. She's had the rash about 3 days, but yesterday her sister was laughing at her because she had a milk tongue. That's when I notice that her lip was moist and whitish, which indicated thrush.

Both the diaper rash and the thrush are the same yeast infection which is a fungal infection. The doctor gave her Nystatin cream three times a day for the diaper rash and Nystatin oral suspension for the thrush three times a day with half the dose squirted in each side of her mouth an hour before or after a meal.

I don't remember if my daughter had thrush, but I remember that my younger, who is the baby's mom, had that diaper rash several times and was always very prone to skin irritations.

You can probably use the OTC treatment, but I recommend a trip to the doctor if she develops the thrush. You didn't do anything wrong for her to get it. It's just one of those things that some kids get.

If you don't have insurance, at least check out CHIPS or Medicaid for the baby. You don't have to be in poverty to receive medical assistance for your kids in Texas. It may be a bit of a hassle, but no parent should have to worry about whether to take their child to the doctor or if they are sick enough to warrant a trip.

Both my granddaughter are on some form of medical assistance. My daughter works and manages her money well, but her employer does not offer any medical insurance. Their father also does not get medical insurance at his job. Neither of them are covered, but they don't have to worry about the kids.

When my son was an infant he got this a few times and each time it turned out to be a yeast infection. I could never get his bum to clear up because all the remedies I tried were for simple diaper rash. For the yeast infection try an antifungal cream like lotrimin. These are all over the counter and fairly affordable. Make sure you are also keeping the area very dry and increase his yogurt intake. If this does not help you may need to seek a doctor. Good luck.

considering the rashes are reoccuring I might suspect yeast. Either way I would not use a diaper cream with mineral oil in it. This will not allow the skin to breathe. Those products are good before a rash happens to keep the moisture out. I would use a cream with calendula in it. Burt's Bees diaper cream works wonders. It soothes the rash but allows it to breathe because the natural oils are absorbed into the skin instead of just sitting on top of it like mineral oil. You cna also rub a little apple cider vinegar over it with a cotton ball then allow to completely dry before diapering again.

if it is not yeast, try a little flax oil (orally) two of my sons get itchy bumps that are eczema like and I give them Flax Oil (strawberry flavor) and it clears it right up! I've also used Mylanta (the stuff for your stomach) and wiped it on their diaper rash area, let it dry, them put on the diaper, and it has cleared up really bad diaper rash, when nothing else worked, and that is great too!

creative solutions but they both have worked for me

It might be a yeast infection. My little girl had exactly what you described and our pediatrician recommended an over the counter anti-fungal/yeast cream such as Lotrimin(sp?) twice a day.He said it would take a couple of weeks for it to resolve. It took about half the time because on top of the recommended cream we put diaper ointment and changed diapers as soon as we saw that it was wet. Hope this was helpful.

Hmmm...maybe heat rash? I always used Dr. Smith's diaper cream - comes in a little 3oz jar. It's available at Walmart by all the other baby toiletries...top shelf at my location. If you can't spot it, ask one of their helpful employees (not! :) or ask the pharmacy to point it out for you. It is a GREAT product and have used it for skin issues I've even had in the past. Put on a thin layer after her bath, but make sure her skin is completely dry before you do it....you are trying to keep moisture OUT not trap it in! Works wonders overnight....good luck!

Here's the thing. It's probably nothing, but if you baby has any other symptoms like fever and/or stomach upset you might want to bite the bullet and get her to a doctor.

Don't use cornstarch or any kind of powder, not good for baby. Try giving her a bath with only water, no soap - she may be sensitive to the soap. Also, for really bad rash use Dr. Smith's diaper cream - I use regular cream (desitin, store brand, any kind of diaper cream) each night regardless of whether there is a diaper rash or not and we have only had 1 true diaper rash. We used the Dr. Smith's and it began to get better. Also, if you can let her lay around on a towel or something naked it would also help. Sometimes wearing a diaper constantly will make their skin sensitive. I wouldn't try a fungal cream or antibiotic ointment until you've spoken to your dr. Try the diaper cream and/or cortison first. Good Luck (and no more cornstarch) . . .

just took my 18 month old to the doctor today for her regular check up and she has had a yeast infection previously. I asked how to tell the difference from yeast and diaper and he explained that yeast will be red with little dots. He has had us use Lotrimin also. I buy the generic store brand, apply 2-3 times a day and it will go away.

The quickest cure for diaper rash that I've found is air and sunshine. Let your little one be 'free' for about 30 minutes. If it doesn't clear up, it may be yeast infection.

Make sure to wash her clothes when you buy new ones before they go onto her. Alot of clothes have a fire proof agent in them which can cause rashes on small children. Try using a laundry detergent without scent, also Tide seems to upset most babies skin.
I would just keep an eye on it and continue what you are doing, if it worsens contact her doctor.
Also... Have you applied for her to have medicaid? I'm sure she is elligible.

Could be yeast. Try an over-the-counter female yeast infection cream. It works wonders and only takes a day to clear the yeast up almost completely. Just rub in on the rash area like diaper rash ointment. Ask the pharmacist what brand he recommends. I think myconizole (sp??) is what I used to use for my children when they were little. It isn't gunky or messy like diaper rash cream but it works like a miracle. If that doesn't clear it up then it might be something else - but I would try that first. :)

I've always used Palmer's Bottom Butter, it doesn't have the zinc oxide in it, which always helped my two little ones... however, it might be a yeast infection if its red and raised a bit... you can use hydrocortisone cream and some antifungal cream together to make a paste and that has worked for us in the past... just over the counter stuff and mix it on your finger to apply it at the same time... i'd only do it like twice a day though...

I know this is late but just got back to my computer. Sounds like you have gotten lots of good advise. What I wanted to tell you is to try to apply for CHIP (childrens health insurance program). It is a good program and most childrens doctors except it. It takes a while but better to have it in case your baby has any serious illnesses. You can get started by going to your search engine and typing in CHIP Texas. God bless you and your family and I pray that things get better for you.

I worked in Daycare and preschools for years and this always works:
1 part ORIGINAL Desitin (not creamy)
1 part Neosporin cream (not ointment)
1 part liquid Maalox

Thoroughly mix it, but it will be gloppy, use it every change.

If she has a polka-dotted rash, it may be an external yeast infection- you should try Lotrimin AF cream, it is
over-the counter at your pharmacy.

Oatmeal baths also help in conjunction with these treatments.

Good luck and God bless
