Nasty Diaper Rash

My two year old son has a dipaer rash for about a week now. It started out red, but is now bumpy and raised and seems to be spreading. He has had rashes before (he does not have sensitive skin)but they have gone away within a day or two just using some cream. Creams were not helping. Looked on the internet looks exactly and is described exactly like an yeast infection. Asked the pharmacist and she told me to mix monistat and rash cream and use that until it goes away. Have been doing that for a day. I am also changing him every hour but not using the cream that often don't worry. It does not seem to bother him. Have been giving him yogurt, what little bit he eats of it. Was wondering how long this could last? If anyone has had any experinence with this? Is this something that I should take him to the doctor for?

Yep, yeast infection. Get the old school 7-day yeast infection cream. I was told to apply it 3 times a day, morning, after nap and before bed.

Here's 2 cents: My daughter kept getting yeast infections last summer without any antibotics to bring it on. After the 3rd one, I realized that it was due to the darn Texas heat & humidity plus wet diapers while she was sleeping at night... made the perfect warm and moist conditions for a yeast infection to thrive.

IF it keeps happening, you might want to dry a different diaper at night. Or see if putting him to bed with only a diaper and no pj's over his bottom half helps decrease moisture. Or change him <gasp!> while he's sleeping.

Call your doctor. If you put the wrong ointment on it...you could be "sealing" in the moisture and making it worse.

My dd had a yeast infection. Skin was raw.
I tried to let her sleep without a diaper during naps.
The more you can air dry this, the faster it will heal.

Also, my doc told me to put a hair dryer on COOL SETTING.
Used to air dry her vaginal area (OUTSIDE AREA) a few times a day.

Try to keep the diaper off as much as you can.
Air dry, air dry, air dry.

Good luck.

If it's a yeast infection (red bumps with little white spots) then any anti-fungal cream will work on it. It may take up to a week to completely go away, and you'll have to apply the cream every time you change his diaper. Only use the anti-fungal cream for the first few days b/c you don't want to cut the power of the anti-fungal medication by mixing in diaper rash cream. If you do this and don't notice any improvement in a day or two then it's time to call the doctor. Good luck with your little one.

Not sure why the pharmacist recommended Monistat. It most likely is a yeast infection but you should be using an athletes foot medicine. My pediatrician has had me use this before on my kids diaper area. It will clear up quick.

I struggle with rashes with my son and my doc said to use a thin layer Lotrimin(generic) with the highest zinc (40%) cream I could find to seal out the moisture over the lotrimin. It did take about a week- just stick with it. I did also switch to a highter abosobency diaper at night too. So far so good :) I think some kids are just more prone because my daughter never had a diaper rash and my son seems to live with them and I change him often.

It's probably worth a call to the doctor. My doctor always told me to put Lotrimin on first and then A&D Ointment on top at each diaper change. Could be that Monistat serves the same purpose as the Lotrimin, I'm not sure if there is a difference in the medicine. But this always seemed to work within 24 - 48 hours for us.

Good luck,
K.

I use only Melaleuca products in my home (all green and safe..and less expensive than store brands) and for rashes like that Dermatin and Renew will work GREAT!! Renew for preventing and treating skin and Dermatin for killing the infection that is causing it. I'd love to help you.
