Diaper Rash - Troy, KS

My son Ryder rarely gets diaper rash but the other day when he came home from a weekend at his Father's he had a very red tooshie. I don't know what could cause such a severe diaper rash in a 24 hour period but I was wondering what ideas you might have. Someone told me it could have been something he ate. I just need to figure out what it could be. It isn't the first time he has come home with a diaper rash like that. If you could help me figure it out then i could talk to the father about whatever he is feeding him that is causing this rash. We both use the same brand of diapers and my son isn't allergic to any of the different baby shampoos or powders. He has a pretty broad diet so I don't think it could have been caused by something he ate. I'm wondering if I just need to talk to him about how often he is changing Ryder.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
I am a 44 year old grandma of two boys. diaper rash isn't normally about changing. I'd stick with questions about food. my 3 yr old grandson is allergic to chocolate. Ask if he's having diharrea? good luck! the best thing to use is warm baths, dry butts, & butt paste!

Food culprits...too much fruit, juice, or acidic foods. I used Triple Paste on my girls when they had a bad rash. Worked wonders.

Maybe he is using a different brand of wipes? I have also found that some kids can get bad rashes very fast. Sometimes it's just a matter of the person in charge not smelling the bm fast enough. When you are in the room when it happens, sometimes it isn't noticed as much as if you were out of the room and walked into it after. I try really hard to get them out of those as instant as possible. I also rinse the soap out of the wipes if they are a little red.

S. - My son went through a period of time where he would get AWFUL diaper rash and honestly they would just pop up. One change he would be fine, the next it was painfully red - sometimes so bad it was blistered and even bleeding. He would scream when we changed his diaper, it was heartbreaking. We would have to rinse the wipes becuase the alcohol would burn him when we tried to clean him up - or use a wet washrag.

If it's that bad, what I found worked wonders was a warm bath with conrstarch. Let him soak and play in it for a bit then if possible try to keep him naked for a while to let it air out. They have powder with cornstarch too and that also helped.

Believe me, we are very diligent about changing his diapers so I know it wasn't a matter of leaving him in a dirty diaper too long. We figured by process of elimination that if he eats too much acidic fruit, that seems to trigger it. I looked and SO much fruit is acidic - bananas, apples and watermelon seemed to be the safer bet for us. He could have the acidic stuff, but in moderation. Which was tough for us as my kid loves tomatoes, oranges and pineapple - ALL acidic. He is now just over 2 years old and thankfully seems to be outgrowing it.

Please be careful not to accuse dad. Just tell him he's been breaking out - you may not want to point out that it's specifically when he comes home as it may sound like an attack - and you are just trying to pinpoint why. If you present it to him like you are trying to figure it out together, I'm sure it will be received much better. Maintaining a good - or as good as possible - relationship with him is in the best interest of your son so try to keep your attitude in check for his sake. I know it's tough, but in the long run, your son will thank you for it. Belive me, I know first hand...

Good luck!

My daughter, who is 20 mos, gets really bad diaper rash with acidic foods such as mandarin oranges. I have found that Dr. Smiths diaper rash cream has been the absolute best when it gets really bad. It sometimes appears to have blisters with it and this cream almost clears it up over night. Take a look and see if he's eating lots of fruit when he seems to get the rash. That's just one suggestion...I'm sure out of many. Good luck!

I can be caused by something he ate, or if being left in a diaper for along time, its good to find out from him what he feeds him if he fed him something different than you feed him. And ya its important to change him when needed. I know if my son sits in a poopy diaper and i dont know that he pooped if he is of in another room playing he dont always let me know hes poopy so he does get a rash on his bottom. Soak him a warm bath with baking soda and use lots of a&d ointment after the bath.

There are lots of posts so maybe someone said this, but our daughter will have that happen when she's teething. It's very sudden - I'll change a wet diaper and and she's fine then two hours later change her and find her bottom has a terrible rash that hurts with wipes. I just use a wet washcloth instead. She's even had it so bad that it's blistered. Unfortunately, there's nothing that will make it better except that tooth coming through. We do use diaper cream to keep it comfortable for her, but that's about it. Then after a couple of days, it goes away. Good luck!

my daughter rarely gets diaper rash. i am freak about changing her. the other night within the span of maybe 10 min (she slipped one past me) she had a flaming red behind. it definitely could have been something she ate. so diaper rash can happen really fast!

we even use A&D ointment on her with every diaper trying to be proactive. on my kiddo i have noticed that the A&D works better than the white balms. generic brands work just as well as name brand for us.

Good Morning S., Congratulations on having a good working relationship with your son's father.

There are a number of things that could or would cause a red hinny. Is Ryder teething? That really causes runny stinky diapers, red hinny's. Is he drinking a lot of Juice? Sometimes the Acidic levels change in their little systems and that can cause it too.

Zane our 15 mo. old gr son gets so red at times he blisters in a matter of hours. He can be clear and smooth before nap time and red as a beet when he gets up. Along with a yucky stinkipoo diaper. He has 12 teeth and I think he's getting more molars. Ain't NO way I am sticking my finger in his little mouth... lol

We have found *FINALY* Aquaphor really heals quickly. His Eczema is even clearing up.

When you talk to dad don't accuse, only ask how often he might change Ryder as your trying to determine if maybe it is something that isn't agreeing with him now or maybe he might be cutting more teeth. And maybe he can help you figure it out.

God Bless and keep up the good communication. It's harder on the child later on if there is arguing and disagreements between you both. ( I know from where I speak ie type..lol ) I was one of those Kids. It was at time Brutal.

My DD gets diaper rash from time to time...Here are the main culprits...

1. Sitting too long in a wet/poopy diaper
2. Pooping a lot in one day - even if it's changed right away
3. Too much juice
4. Too much tomato/tomato sauce
5. Too much acidic foods (oranges, citrisy stuff)

Hope this helps!!
