My ped told me to dab on milk of magnesia or malox, let it dry then use the desitin. I used the milk of magnesia and it was gone overnight.

Sorry this is late. Anyway, I do 3-4 warm baths a day. Air dry. Dab with Maalox (or store brand is ok) on a cotton ball, let air dry then put on a diaper rash cream or Aquafor. To avoid the diaper rash, I use Aquafor after every change.

Crazy, but it works.

I use Baby Aquaphor healing ointment by Eucerin which seems to work the quickest and the best. I have recommended this to a friend whose baby was always getting rashes from her cloth diapers and this worked pretty quickly for them too. You can find it at Target, Pharmaca, or down any baby isle really. I hope this works for you and good luck!

fast and cheap way to fix the problem is baking soda with water, put it in the tub, and let her play or make it into a paste. My daughter had a diaper rash, that had blistered with in 3 hours of getting it. To this day we have no clue what caused it, but I got tired of watching her cry everytime she moved, her doc said to use desitin. It wasnt working, and I remember my mom using baking soda on me when I was younger. so I put some in the tub let her play until the water was cold, then took her out, when I looked at her little bum, you couldnt even tell she had a rash. Its cheap and the only thing I will use. Wish you luck.

When my girls were younger their doc told me to get Aquaphor lotion and Maalox. My youngest daughter would get a rash so bad in an instant she would blister right away. I get tupperware or a similar container and put all of the lotion in. Then I pour as much of the Maalox in as I can. Usually I put in about 3/4 of the bottle. This does take a bit of elbow grease to mix together. Then when I change the diaper I would put it on like regular diaper rash cream and then add in an extra bit in the diaper. Then the next time I would change the diaper it would either be gone or considerably better. I still do this for my son who is 2. One of the kids mom that I care for during the day has also started doing this when he gets a bad rash.

I know a lot of experts say not to use is as it can breed bacteria, but the only thing that would take care of my son and daughters diaper rash is useing corn starch powder in their diapers. It absorbs the moisture and keeps the rash dry so it can heal. I think it could breed bacteria if left in a diaper too long wet, so I never did use it over night I would use diaper cream then.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bag Balm. When my daughter was almost 1 she got a rash so bad if flared up in a matter of an hour to bleeding pussy blisters (she was allergic to something and that was what got her), i wiped her down let it dry and put on tons of bag balm and it was gone the next day with the minor see the spots from where it was but completely gone by day 2. I still use it on my boy and the best part, a tub of it at walmart (maybe $4.00) lasts forever. My oldest is 8 and i have purchased maybe 4 times total for both kids. I also use it on dry chapped heals. Its like a Vaseline but it has a bit of medication in it. it has to be safe because it is used on cows utters and if it was bad then the calves would get sick.

Desitin is good and it does help. The problem is that if you are using baby wipes and then putting the desitin on, it locks in the chemicals/soaps/fragrances from the baby wipes, which further irritates the rash.

Trust me on this one- I've figured this out after four babies. After you use the baby wipes to clean her off, proceed to rinse her little bottom off with water under running water in the tub or sink and then pat dry with a towel. THEN apply the desitin. I'm telling you it will make a big difference.

If the rash is at a super bad stage, it's also good to let them run around bare bottom and air it out. The only problem is that you risk accidents!

If you are interested in going the natural route than Angel Baby Bottom Balm is the way to go....it will fight yeast and just about anything else causing the problem. If it is yeast than you should probably treat your daughter internally as well. There are lots of natural ways to do that as well...let me know if you'd like further information. Incidentally I'm treating my son for yeast as we speak.
Good luck!

I love a product called ILEX. It's hard to find but fabulous. Slather it on the affected area. The idea is for it to form a barrier between your baby's bottom and any stool they may have. When you change the diaper just dab it don't wipe it off. I know it's gross but that's how it protects your baby's bottom. I put some A&D ointment or vaseline on the diaper where it will touch the ilex so it doesn't stick to it and pull it off when you change the diaper. It will be better within 1 day usually.
You can find it at the draper walgreens or just call around. I also do sits baths (warm water and try to keep the area very clean). Hope that helps:)

Hi C.,
We would spray their bottom over the sink with warm water until it was clean (I used those perineal bottles from the hospital), then patted dry with a clean washcloth. Let them air dry as long as you can. This works pretty well for the actual changing the diaper time. It doesn't hurt them.

I tried all the diaper creams when my littlest had a rash that just wouldn't go away. It wasn't yeast and none of them helped...he screamed at everything. Except...

Egg whites. Sounds crazy, I know. I read online that they use it on NICU babies in the UK. (Obviously don't use it if your DD has any allergy/intolerance to egg.) Just beat some egg white (I kept the extra in the fridge) and slather it on at each diaper change. Let it dry for a minute or two (you can also dry it a bit with a hairdryer) and then put the new diaper on. I think that because the egg white is so thin in consistency it really gets into every little crack & crevice... and then when you let it dry it makes a good watertight seal (and no, it doesn't get hard like you might be thinking) and is truly a barrier to protect baby's skin.

My son's rash that I was fighting for WEEKS improved markedly overnight once I tried this. His did turn out to be a sensitivity to the diaper brand...he doesn't tolerate Huggies at all. I saw that someone else mentioned food allergies as a possibility and I'd second that. You might keep a food diary & see if it seems to come up after certain foods (ingested by her directly or you if you're still nursing her). The intermittent nature of the rash would make me more suspicious of that than a sensitivity to the diapers, honestly.

Best of luck!

One thing I didn't see mentioned... do you know if any particular foods cause your daughter's diaper rash? One of my boys would almost always have a diaper rash, and occasionally it was pretty bad (blistered & bleeding). We figured out that the worst rashes happened after he ate anything with strawberries or tomatoes. He didn't have any more of the blistery rashes after we eliminated those foods, but he still usually had a minor rash almost every day. Then we switched him to lactose-free milk and the rashes completely went away. If lactose isn't digested properly it can make the stool more acidic.

My mom had told me that diaper creams didn't work on me and when I had diaper rash problems with my son she told me to get Bag Balm. You can get it at Walgreens and it is in a short, square green tin. It is thick and sticks to their bottom really well. It really helps keep the moisture off.
Also, my girlfriend has a baby girl and they thought she had a diaper rash but it didn't go away and she tried using some anti-fungal cream and that helped clear it up.
Hope that helps you.

My son occasionally has really acidic diarrhea that leaves a horrible rash for days. Normal OTC diaper rash creams don't work.

My pediatrician prescribed a topical burn cream with antibiotic properties. It works like a miracle and the rash is nearly perfectly better after 24 hours. 48 hours on the meds and it's gone.

It's called thermazene (silver sulfadiazine cream 1%)

This is what my pediatrician recommended and worked for us: mix 1 part Aquaphor (healing ointment)to 1 part Mylanta (yes, the stuff you drink - this helps with the acidity of the urine). It takes a little bit of elbow greese to get it mixed up, but it was the only thing that helped my son's bum get healed up from a prolonged rash. It doesn't work instantly, though, so it might not be the quick fix you're looking for.

I found that Triple Paste Diaper cream worked best. The other thing that helped greatly was to let her be naked for a while each day. Although potentially messy, the air works wonders. Change her OFTEN when she is in diapers. Finally, if there are white bumps or pimples in there it could be yeast and I'd call/see the doctor for the best treatment there. My sister had this happend with her daughter and the doctor prescribed a great treatment (pricey but worked!) Good luck.

It could be a yeast infection instead of just a plain diaper rash. The key to getting rid of yeast is to keep the area DRY. That means that you might go through a few more diapers, but change her frequently to keep it dry. When you do change her let her air out a bit too. I have found that using a blow dryer to dry it out helps too, as the yeast likes the moist dark, and the blow dryer takes that away. Also try using an antifungal cream (like you would use to treat althele's foot) instead of the desitin. We also give our girls a sitz bath in vinegar. (use about 1 cup for the bath and let them soak, then rinse off and dry completely.) But don't let her drink the water. Hope that this helps. If it doesn't clear up in a day or 2, I would suggest taking her to the doc and seeing what he had to say as it might be something more than just a simple rash.

I've heard that Bag Balm is great for diaper rash. My daughter had graduated out of diapers before I heard this so I never got to try it out myself. My daughter would get diaper rash if she had too much fruit or juice so I would recommend watching her diet for clues as to what is giving her the rash in the first place. Maybe you could prevent the next one. Good luck! I know it can be so painful for the poor little ones.

Sounds like you have received a ton of suggestions, and since we always got by fine with Desitin (not the creamy, but the regular thick greasy stuff), I don't have a brand to recommend.

I did however want to mention that we determined that my oldest son was alergic to ALOE. I'm not sure how common this is, but we discovered he would get a rash when we used the Aloe Huggies wipes, and/or the Huggies Supreme w/Aloe diapers. I don't think he's alergic to it now, but man that stuff gave him some nasty rashes as a baby.

Just another thing to rule out.

Hi C.,

My two boys would sometimes get a rash that was actually caused from a yeast type infection. With a yeast infection it will be really red and little spots will sometimes open and bleed or hurt really bad with contact with a wipe. My doctor said the best way to make it go away fast is to use Tinactin cream, not spray (in the athletes foot section of the grocery store). You can also buy the generic store version, but I can't remember the name. It gets rid of the rash within 24 hours.

I hope this helps, and I know it worked great with my kids!

I love Vitamin A & D or Aquafor (sp?) before I put on Dr. Smiths diaper cream. They both have lanolin, and if your a breastfeeding mom you know how great lanolin can be. It acts like a numbing agent. But I will change my daughter ever 2 hours and apply that paste everytime and in less then 24 hours the rash is gone. You also need to check and make sure it is not a yeast infection. So if those first to dont work and the rash looks like very defined little red bumps then you need to get a RX for Nystatin or over the counter Lotrin A.F. (HAS TO BE A.F.) Have you tried changing brands of diapers? My first could not wear pampers. My twins could not wear loves. Each diaper has just a little bit different composition and sometimes that is what causes the super duper diaper rash. Once I changed brands they never had a diaper rash. Also instead of using the cream I would use diaper powder, it wicks the potty away from them and it doesn't burn, usually clears the rash up in 1-2 days also.

we've used desitin, A&D--when my dd at age 3 just had terrible diarrhea I just revisited this question myself and I used Balmex. it was the only thing that worked--she often got yeast infections as a baby so she always had yogurt in her diet, and her pediatrician gave me monostat cream to use on her bum to get rid of the yeast infections, which you can tell because they have raised bumps instead of flat red--(ironically my woman's doc gave me athlete's foot cream for my yeast infection and said it's the same thing--so there you go) and always let her air out her bum between changes. it's pretty funny watching her run around saying I gotta air out my bum!
you didn't say the rashes were constant but if they are, changing diaper brands can often help, my dd couldn't wear pampers--they gave her a rash. we found a great generic that worked actually--lol. now a generic pullup at sam's club gives her rashes so we have to use the huggies pull ups.
Good luck, I hate going through the bum rashes esp. when it hurts them so bad they can't sit comfortably--(like I said just had really bad poops...) hang in there.

I would ck with your pediatrician first though esp if the normal diaper rash cream just isn't cutting it

I also use baking soda in the bath, but after the bath I cut a bit off my aloe plant, open it up, add a drop of lavender and a drop of tea tree essential oils to the aloe and apply it to the rash. You can also put all of the above into the bath. I personally can vouch for the paste mixture - I had gotten bit by something and it was itching like crazy, so I made a paste of baking soda & the above oils(minus the aloe) on the bites, let it dry and flaked it off, and no more itching or pain! It is terrific.

My daughter has always had super sensitive skin so much that if we didnt put something on her bum she would break out in horrible rashes where her skin seemed to have open sores imediantly. The only thing that worked for me and I swear by is Aquaphor. That stuff works like a miracle! I buy the super big container(much cheaper by the oz)and put it in small containers and have them everywhere a diaper might be changed. I have never tried adding Malox but may the next time she gets a bad one. Love the Aquaphor as it can be used for so many other things as well; for burns, cuts, chapped lips, chaffing, etc. It doesnt have a sent and doesnt burn or sting! The rash has always looked better and sometimes has been gone by the next diaper change! Good luck!

TRIPLE PASTE! Some Smith's sell it, and I know you can get it on diapers.com. My sister runs a big daycare (60 kids) and it's all she will use. She recommended it to me and it took care of the worst case in less than 24 hours. It also doesn't sting them like Desitin and some others can.

I'm pretty sure someone has mentioned yeast, but it's definitely something to consider if this is a reoccuring rash. You can look up the symptoms online. It can be treated with Monistat, but once you get it under control there are some things you can do to help your daughter. First, make sure her diet is not high in refined sugar. Sugar feeds yeast, contributing to overgrowth. Highly refined carbohydrates are also not good for her, as they are turned into sugar in her system. Second, you can add a probiotic to her diet. A good probiotic will have several different species of bacteria and will be stored in the refrigerator section of any store like Vitamin Cottage, Sunflower Market or Whole Foods. I really like the JarroDophilus brand. They make a kids and an infant version. I just open up the capsules and sprinkle the powder on my kids' tongue. It must be sweet, because they love it and beg for "tummy vitamins" every day. During an infection, you can also sprinkle the powder directly onto the rash at each diaper change.

Best of luck,
S. L

The best advice I have ever gotten was from my doctor. He says that the only cure is air. And most parents aren't willing to leave a diaper off long enough for the bum to get enough air, so he told me to get out the hair dryer.

When my sons got bad diaper rashes, the only thing that soothed them was a warm bath (I think I didn't put any soap in the water). Then after their bath, I'd lay them on their changing table with a toy or book to look at and blow the hairdryer at their bum on the warm or cool setting (definitely not hot.)

It was amazing how quickly the stubborn rashes cleared up. After one blow-dry it already looked a little better. The next day it was nearly healed. And getting it healed up means that it doesn't come back easily.

Good luck!

I use A&D Ointment. It works well & protects the rash from more moisture and chafing. I put a thin amount on each red area until it disappears and I use it at the 1st signs of a rash. Also, be sure to change your little one more often than usual to avoid rashes as she seems to have more sensitive skin than some other children have.

You can also try using a cornstarch based powder at every diaper change to prevent moisture build up. Good luck!

Make it a GREAT week!

I second the suggestion of browning flour in a frying pan. My daughter gets rashes very easily and a friend of mine told me about this. I always saw a dramatic clearing up of her rash within one diaper change after using the burnt flour. Not to mention that its a lot cheaper than diaper rash cream.

If it is super red and maybe cracked and/or bleeding it may be a yeast rash. Use over the counter yeast medication (Lotrimin) or for better stuff, go to your doctor and get some prescription meds that clear it up immediately. If it is just regular diaper rash, I have great luck with Weleda products. Kind of expensive, but worth it. You can find Weleda at Whole Foods or I prefer Target.

My kids always got the worst rashes when they pooped, then peed before the diaper was changed. Make sure to changer her as soon as she is dirty to help prevent the rash.

When she is rashy, avoid the wipes and use fresh water instead (or wipes then a soft cloth with fresh water, to get the wipe's residue off her). Then let her run around naked for a few minutes. A lot of rashes are caused, or made worse, by contact with moisture and the skin not being able to breathe. Running around bare-bottomed can help and feels good too.

Since you got so many responses I'll be brief. Oldest daughter had a horrible and persistent rash when she was younger. We tried everything and went to several doctors to diagnose the prob. In the end we just let her air out as much as possible and used a litte baby powder. It went against all the suggestions that we got but we went with our gut.
Best of luck,

Naked butt time is good. Some babies can't handle the weird ingredients in disposable diapers. Have you considered cloth? The last time we had any redness was October, when his molars came in.

I'd also suggest making wipes or just a spray bottle of water, as most commercial ones have alcohol and other things that can irritate baby's skin.

This is our fav diaper rash spray: http://www.eco-politan.com/Kissaluvs_Diaper_Lotion_Potion...

Good luck. I feel so bad for baby's with sore bottoms.

ALSO, WRITE DOWN WHAT SHE EATS , AS THIS WILL CONTRIBUTR TO THOSE RASHES. SUCH AS CITRIS. Good luck and god bless.

I have tried practically everything under the sun on my kids. I decided on A&D ointment. Not the creamy white kind, though (Zinc Oxide or something, it's in the blue and white bottle). It's more like thick vaseline consistency, in the retro looking brownish and tan or off white tube. Not many people have mentioned why they like what they like. Let me tell you why I like A&D over other brands. A&D actually immediately relieves the pain of a diaper rash. When my kids were older, but still in diapers, they would actually ask for the cream because they knew it made their little bum feel better. I also like it because it tends to stay on their skin, rather than absorbing into the diaper. So it protects for much longer. It's thicker, so it provides a better barrier between the diaper and their skin. It's easy to put on without pulling at their tender skin and making the situation worse. And the best part: It works quickly! I rarely had to apply the cream a second or third time. Only if it were a really bad rash. Most of the time, the rash is significantly better the next diaper change. Anyway. Hope that helps. I haven't used anything else since my first child. And I have four. Why change what works? Good luck finding something that works for you.

Put a few drops of tea tree oil in her bath. Tea tree oil has to be diluted!!! Then after the bath let her go without a diaper for a bit. I would recommend a less harsh diaper cream like Earths best. Desitin contains some harsh chemicals as well as some other popular brands.

Hi C.,
First words of caution: Make sure it isn't a yeast infection :0). Next the 2 greatest "diaper rash" cures I have found that ACTUALLY work. Tea Tree salve and ABC herbal diaper rash cream. They both protect as they heal. Awesome!!!
The tea tree salve/balm you can pick up at Wholefoods, Sunflower, Natural Grocers (or any other health food store). And the ABC herbal diaper rash cream you can find at www.naturallylovely.myarbonne.com and they will deliver it directly to your door. Awesome products with amazing results. Take care, G

Change the brand of diapers that you use. My daughter had the same problem and even occasionally got bladder infections. An ER Doc told me to always use pampers diapers. They have an igrediant in them that keeps the urine away from the skin better than any other diaper out there!

My doc told me to A&D on the bottom & white Desitin on top & it always worked for me (I used generic when I could). Also, let her go commando for a bit. Give her a cushion on the floor to sit on in case she does potty (it'll go on the cushion & not on the couch) & pour straight vinegar on the potty messes she might have (blot what pee you can, pour enough vinegar to cover the wet spot, let it set for an hour or so & blot again)
My boys would get painful blistering diaper rashes at times-a lot depended on what foods they ate. Commando, 2 diaper creams. Good luck!

I use two products on my babies' bottoms. One is MelaGel, which takes the sting away from the rash but also provides a barrier. Also, I use ReNew Lotion everyday on their bottoms to soothe the sore skin and also help heal it. It also helps make a barrier for wetness. Both use natural ingredients and are safe to use everyday. You can only get them on-line. Let me know if you'd like to know more.

With my girls I found that baby powder helps best. My youngest would get a bad rash as well, i would use a damp towel to clean her before putting on a new diaper. I would then put baby powder on it, the creams all irritated it more for her. My pediatrician turned me on to the powder because the rash is already wet, you need to dry it out with the powder to get the full rash gone. After the rash diminishes to very light, then move on to the cream, which I have A&D, Butt Paste and Desitin in my cupboards.
