"Potty Training" I have recently been asked for advice about "Potty Training" because I have had a lot of experience with Children over the years. I am 61 years old., I have 5 adult children, 10 grandchildren ages 9-23, and 3 great-grandchildren. When I was raising my children, there was alot of emphasis on a child being "Potty Trained" before the age of 2. If the child was past 2, there definately had to be something seriously wrong with that child, and of course if the child is a boy., then indeed they are slower that the girls, because of course girls mature so much more quickly, even in the diaper stage. Then of course if your child is 3, and you have a new baby., and they want diapers too., then of course the situation gets much more difficult for the parents to understand. Personally I feel each child is an individual, and each situation is different. "There are no two snowflakes alike" Please don't pressure your children into "Potty Training" we a;ready have a society of dysfunctional adults. Who knows perhaps it all started with those Diapers. (I personally got "Potty Trained" @ 9 months, My mother didn't change my diapers., and if she did I wonder how many times she stuck me with that GREAT BIG PIN to shut me up!!!!!Love You All xoxo N.

What can I do next?

Amen Sista!

I have said to many Moms on this site 'there is no such thing as potty training'.

The kid will do it when the kid is ready, not one second before! Some really ARE ready at two (or even before). If they are not ready, no amount of MamaWitchCraft is gonna help! tehehe

I also like to say, if you think 'potty training' sucks, wait til you have to teach them how to drive!

Have a great day!

I personally think that if you can potty train earlier the better. Less money spend on diapers, creates a smidgen more independence for the child, less diapers = less disgusting waste in the landfills. Children are capable of potty training before the age of one. Most countries have their babies potty trained by 1. This weekend has been my son's start to potty training. He's 15 months and that, I feel, was overdue. He's doing great with it. Most parents pressure their child to much which then in turn makes them shout out and resist. Hence the "not ready".
This is all my two cents.

Good morning Carol, I'm one of those parents who believe in potty training early, I have much experience too, so it's great to read from another woman with much experience. I will be 54 in March have 3 adult children, all potty trained before 2 without a lot of stress and drama. I have 2 sons and one daughter and my sons were not hard to potty train at all. I know many believe boys are harder, all though that has not been my experience. I have been potty training children for 14 years in my daycare, most were trained before or at least by 2, some did not due to lack of trainig at home with the parents. In my experience i have found that success in potty training has more to do with the trainer than the child. Most people don't think about personal hygene when it comes to their children, i did and still do. I remember going up the the Naval emergency room with a friend because her 2 year old daughter had a what we thought was a horrible diaper rash that would bleed everytime her mom wiped her, well it turned out to be a really bad yeast infection, the ER doctor told her, your daughter is 2 get her out of diapers. Most preschools won't take them at 2 if they are not potty trained, and some daycare providers charge more if they are not potty trained. Thank you for posting your experience and opinion, it's great to share. J.

Hello, I totally agree. Each child is different. My philosophy is: They aren't going to go to college or get married wearing diapers, so what's the rush. When mine were ready, it took one day. I just put on the regular underwear and they didn't like how it felt running down their little legs. If they didn't get it in one day, I put them back into diapers and tried again in a couple of weeks. This worked for my daycare children and grandchildren, as well. Life is full of challenges and this shouldn't be a big one.
