Delivery Experiences at B&W or Mass General

Does anyone have any advice as to whether to choose an OB or Midwife at either the Brigham or Mass General? I live pretty close to both, so neither is inconvenient. Did you like the atmosphere better at one hospital over the other? Did you like a midwife/doctor at one better than the other? I don't know why - but this seems like a hard decision for me!

What can I do next?

I work at MGH in the OB clinic and it's a fabulous place w/ wonderful midwives (Not just saying that). I delivered my baby here w/ the midwifery svce. It is a great place to work and the employees all come here. People are happy to work here and help the patients.

I thought the Brigham was kind of busy and not as personal as MGH when my sister delivered her 1st one. She came to MGH for the 2nd and had a great experience. Brigham is a fine place too, but MGH is smaller and much more patient oriented.

I can try to answer more specific questions if you want.

Good luck!

Hi C., I've had two babies at the Brigham and both times I had wonderful experiences. The nurses were great as well as the doctors (OBs and Pediatricians). I went to a different practice for each of my pregnancies and I've met quite a few of the OBs and every one of them I've really liked. I also personally loved the fact that BWH is pretty strict with visiting hours...especially in the labor and delivery rooms. I pushed for 3 1/2 hours with my first and wasn't up for visitors at 1:00 in the morning after that! Good luck with your decision and if you have any more questions about specific OBs feel free to email me. :0)

I had a maternity clinical rotation at the Brigham, it was nice. Everything was clean, the rooms were nice and the nursing staff seemed nice but I chose to delivered and had my midwife at MGH. We had a great midwife (Autumn Cohen), she took her time and was very available to us. The feel on the floor at MGH felt calmer to me than the Brigham. If you really can't decide, I recommend taking a tour of both places and see which one gives you a better vibe. Good Luck and congratulations!

I had my baby at MGH last summer and had a fantastic experience. My pregnancy was fine but my labor/delivery was very complicated with fetal heart decels. The nurses, doctors were exceptional with their treatment and the way the explained complicated and scary things to us. We safely had a healthy baby boy by c-section. I went with a doctor so I am not the best person to ask about a midwife. I did have a rotation at BWH in the L/D dept and the program is very good but the atmosphere is not as friendly. That is one of the reasons we chose MGH. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

I had an absolutely great experience at B&W. the staff was wonderful. I unexpectedly had to deliver by c section..they were so skilled and knowledgeable.. i was so scared, but their level of care and expertise made me feel so much better.
The rooms were great.. felt like a hotel, not a hospital.

good luck with your baby!

Hello, I used a midwife with my first and a doctor with my second. Both at MGH. To be honest I would go with the doctor. MGH was excellent. My experience with the midwife was good but during delivery the doctor and midwife were butting heads while I was delivering. It was not good. They have different ways of wanting to deliver babies. I would recommend MGH. Good luck.

I went with a Midwife. She stayed by my side thru the whole thing but had a doctor near by just in case.I felt my Midwife was concerned with my comfort as well as the baby. She stayed by my side until my daughter was born. They even had a fold out bed for my husband and plenty of space in my room. So I didn't feel cooped up. We went with the Mass General because they had a better security system concerning Child Theft.GOOD LUCK!

Hi C. - I have given birth in both places - though a long time ago - at B&W with my 13 yo and MGH with my 8 yo! And now we use MGH because we are closer for everything. I really liked MGH's Vincent OB service. Just keep in mind that the doc you get will probably not be the doc/midwife team you will have when you deliver just because birth is so unpredictable! But that is okay. Both hospitals are excellent and the staff is great. I would pick whichever feels easiest to you to get in and out of, and easiest for parking because you will be going a lot.
Good luck, C. in Boston

I delivered both of my children at MGH. The doctors and the nursing staff are great. They are approachable, comforting, not too pushy.....even in emergency situations (both times).

Good luck with your decision.
