Daughter's Hair Smells like Urine

I have a 6 year old daughter whose hair smells like urine every night. She showers and washes her hair every night. (I have even tried to wash it myself) but when it is time for her to get ready for bed every night, she smells like urine again. The smell is only in her hair. I am wondering if there may be something wrong and causing her to "sweat urine."

What can I do next?

Our body odour is dependant on the constituents of the sweat produced by the apocrine (sweat) glands. These are modified around the nipple, groin, genitalia and under the arm so that their secretions are likely to be especially pungent. To a lesser extent, the sweat glands on the cheeks, eyelids, ears, temple and scalp produce similar secretions.
The sweat contains steroid compounds, especially the 16-androstenes — these are particularly profuse in the sweat produced by the groin and armpits. Once bacteria have acted on the sweat they break it down and that gives it its individual smell.
The more androstene that a person’s sweat contains, the greater the potential for him or her to be strong smelling. It has been found that two of the 16-androstene compounds are important in this respect. If there is a predominance of androstenol, the sweat from the armpits and kindred areas tends to smell markedly musky; if there is a predominance of androstenone, the sweat develops an obvious smell of urine.
There are some conditions and diseases that can linked to smells. Food allergies, diabetes and kidney disease are to name a few. I would recommend your child first be checked for food allergies since your child is not having other major problems like yellowing of the eyes or vision problems. A.

Hi,
I agree with the other moms, she needs to go to the doctor. Urine and sweat contain the same compound, urea. Usually sweat is much more dilute so it shouldn't smell like urine. This could be something simple from a dehydration issue to something more complicated like kidney problems because the kidneys aren't properly filtering the blood. Also, the liver is responsible for breaking down compounds in the blood, so there could also be a problem there. I would say this coul be a weird symptom that is a clue to something larger. But put your mind at ease and go to the doc. Good luck, I hope it's something simple.

I've never heard of anything like that before. I would take her to the doctor if I were you and discuss this with him/her. It could be a sign of something more serious. There are certain conditions that can alter the composition of our sweat, I don't know specifically what all of them are, but I know they're out there. Talk to her Dr.

Please go IMMEDIATELY to your pediatrician. The smell of urine could mean that there are kidney problems. If the kidneys cannot do their job properly, the body excretes urea through the pores and you get a urine smell. Usually, the skin on the rest of the body will smell when there are kidney problems because the urea exits through all pores .....however, the sooner you rule out real medical problems, the better. Let us know how it goes and best of luck!

Could it possibly be the shampoo? Maybe try something new & see if it still happens. If not that, I would take her to the doctor.

I would probably get her checked out by a doctor to rule out the kidney problem, but try changing shampoo first. Ammonia in shampoo can smell like urine, so try a shampoo that does not have that ingredient, or try Selsun Blue - has sulfur in it and that may help, or try an antibacterial body wash like Dial and it will cut down on any bacteria, fungus, etc that may be the cause as well. Hope this helps!
