Are there any really good books/ workbooks/ sites for teaching your 4 year old things at home? My daughter is right where she needs to be academically through my teachings at home and her preschool class, but summer is coming up and I want to keep her prepared for 4 K, but I'm kind of stuck on what to teach since I have an 18 month old also (my brain seems stuck between the two ages). I'm looking for something that will give info on what will help with entering 4K and also teaching materials that will be fun to "play school" with. She loves playing school and I thought it would be fun to have some kind of teaching materials that would make learning fun. I do know about the website "No TIme for Flashcards" and that has been really great. We love working on crafts from her site. I also plan on getting the Handwriting Without Tears program. What do you like to teach with and what do your kids love to learn from?
Thanks!

My husbands aunt is a teacher in Kindergarten and she says some of the most prepared kids she sees for reading are the ones that watch the leap frog Dvds. The Leap Frog "The Letter Factory" Is great -- it teaches the letters and the phonetic sounds. We have The Letter Factory, Word Factory, Leap Learns to Read.. and Math Circus. My son started Kindergarten ahead of many kids who went to pre-k and was on of the first reading, simply because we read to him a lot and I only let my kids watch videos or shows with some value. (No Spongebob in my house) We also have a few education video games. Like the Reader Rabbit series and Jumpstart.

I also purchased the Deluxe Hooked on Kindergarten kit. (By the Hooked on Phonics people) I have a child thats 3.5 now.. since she's a late birthday she won't get to start Kindergarten until she's 5.5.. She's *so* eager to learn like her big brother, I got that and some workbooks for her. We're going to just "play school" and work on her letters at first.. going from there.

You'll get lots of ideas from other moms, so I don't want to go there. But please be aware that too much focus on academics really can backfire and squelch a child's natural love of learning, so whatever you do, I hope you'll make sure your daughter considers it fun.

Keep in mind that your daughter will be taught what she needs to know, in small, appropriate steps, in preschool. If she's too far ahead of the curve, she may get bored and uncooperative. I've seen it happen a few dozen times in young families I know.

At your daugter's tender age, play, play, and more imaginative play is her most important "work." This is where all aspects of her future self blossom in balance: continued development of motor and verbal skills, the first inklings of ethical and social observations, practice with emotions, and learning about self-control and delay of gratification, and gradually becoming part of the larger community.

I hope you will google "the importance of play in young children" for quite a bit of recent research. Play should never take a second seat to academics during the preschool years.

I have some really great learning tools and games available through Discovery Toys. Your daughter can learn reading and match skills, as well as writing and recognizing letters and numbers - all while having fun and not even realizing she's learning!

Please visit my website at http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/karenchao to browse what I have available. I highly recommend "Busy Bugs" and "Busy Farm" as well as the different "Wipe it Clean" workbooks. Finally, the "Think it Through" games are amazing learning tools.

Please let me know if you have any questions. You can order directly through my site or contact me at ____@____.com We have some great specials going on this month, so contact me before placing your order to see if you qualify!!
