Cough Medicine

My 2 1/2 year old daughter has a cough...it's only been 2 days, but nothing is working to suppress it. It's a dry cough...no other symptoms. I think it's allergy induced irritation from the winds and then helping her Daddy mow the grass. She's not sleeping well...from coughing. Otherwise she's in great spirits! Any ideas on a good cough medicine that will REALLY help??
Thanks so much!

Hi Adria,

When my kids get a cough I combine Delsyn with a humidifier. They both work well on their own but work great together. If that doesn't take care of it immediately, then the next night I give benedryl. But usually it doesn't get that far.

If it is a dry cough Delsyme works good. I am not sure what you have tried but this might work. Also Robitussin DM works good if their is chest congestion along with the cough. Hope this helps!

I would call your pediatrician. The CDC just recently announced their recommendation that no over the counter medicine be given to infants and toddlers without first checking with your pediatrician. Won't it be nice when winter is over and we can be past the sick season.

She doesn't need cough medicine, she needs an antihistamine like Benedryl. The coughing will stop.

I agree that benadryl works good. If it is allergies make sure she has clean sheets and a bath before bed. They get the pollens in their hair and on their bodies when outside. Good luck.

My daughter has the same problem every spring. We give her benedryl for a few nights and then switch to Claritin. She usually takes Claritin daily through the spring. Her pediatrician reccommended this.

As already advised- Benadryl. 1 tsp per 25 pounds of body weight.
Also, warm juice or tea- you know like the Lemon Zinger w/ a spot of honey.
Lots and lots of fluids!

Good luck

With her age, there may not be much out there in the way of OTC cough medicine that lasts more than 3-4 hours. If you can find Children's Delsym, that would be the one to get--it's difficult to find. You could probably have your grocery store pharmacist order it. It does sound like sinus drainage. If it goes on for a week, it's time to see the dr. Sometime OTC just won't do the trick and you need something stronger.

Hi Adria,
I use benadryl at nap and bedtime if needed. I was advised not to give cough suppressants???? I run a humidifier in the kids' rooms as well. Good luck...

My 20 month old had a cough the last few days with no other symptoms...I thought it was allergies too. Yesterday he started to sound a little wheezy..sucking in a lot when crying. He has been good spirits and playing. I decided to bring him in to the doctor and he has walking pneumonia! I guess it is going around. You may want to have it checked out.

Just a thought.

I also use Delsyme and it works great. If they cough, I only have to give them a dose 2 times max and never hear it again until the next season.

I had the same problem with my son a few weeks ago. My Sister in Law told me of an OTC cough medicine called Delsym. It's in an orange box (Walmart, CVS, etc), and it's for children. They have one for adults as well. Anyway - it worked. Delsym doesn't have anything in it but a cough suppressant (dextromethorphan polistirex). It's a 12 hour cough relief - and there is a dosage chart on the back starting at age 2! It thinks it's 1/2 teaspoon. This cough medicine has a higher dosage of the dextromethorphan than all other cold medicines.
Hope this helps!

to be honest, the thing that's worked best for us is a humidifier. when my son (3-1/2) is sick, that seems to be the thing that has the most impact.

sometimes the dextromthorphan (sp?) helps, but it's hit or miss. i wonder if it's just the syrup lining his throat that's helping ...

Adria,

I am a pharmacist. She probably needs an antihistamine like Benadryl or if you want a non-drowsy antihistamine you can give her Children's Claritin if it is allergy induced.
