Converting Crib - Guardrail Needed?

My almost 2 year old appeared in the kitchen when she was supposed to be napping in her crib yesterday, and came waltzing out this morning when she woke up at 6am. Guess its time to convert the crib into a bed! The model we have (Graco Charleston Crib) does convert, but I just read in the reviews that it does not have a guard rail of any kind.

What do you think moms, would you run out and buy some kind of guard rail? Or put some cushions down and see what happens? We do have a wood floor.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Just yesterday, I saw a suggestion of putting a foam pool noodle under a fitted sheet at the edge of the bed. I wish I had known that tip when my kids were toddlers!

Guard rail. My girls fell out of bed a few times even with a guard rail at first. You won't regret it.

We just switched our 2 year old to a toddler bed earlier this month! Our crib converted without a guardrail, and we were a little concerned, but we ended up just putting down a really thick blanket like a rug on the side of the bed. He has fallen out 2 times all month, once her continued sleeping and the other time he was sitting up. No injuries or anything, and our son was a WILD sleeper in the crib. I would try it with some sort of cushioning and if after a few weeks she is consistently falling out, then you might want to consider a rail.

My niece was in a toddler bed, and later a twin bed and would fall out occasionally onto a wood floor with a very thin rug. She was such a good sleeper that when I would hear the thud nd rush into her room she was ALWAYS still sleeping!

Oh, and we put a child safety door know cover on the inside of our son's bedroom, so he couldn't escape if he got out of bed. Good luck!

When we converted our two year old's crib we put pillows down and she was constantly rolling out of bed - sometime multiple times a night. I found and purchased the Stay-Put Inflatable Bed Rails from onestepahead.com. Absolutey LOVE them! She has not fallen out of bed since. They are a bit pricey but they work great (as long as you do not over inflate them). The bonus is that they can deflate and be taken anywhere (hotels, grandparents, etc). I feel like they were worth the investment.

Isn't it close to the ground? Closer that the top of the crib? She'll be fine without any rails or anything. She'll just have more to climb over that might hurt her.

We had wood flooring, but did not use a guard rail. We did put the mattress on the floor for a little while...surrounded by pillows. After a little while, we removed the pillows, and eventually put the mattress back on the bed.

Once on the bed, we put a pillow next to her on the "open" side of the bed for a while. Funny enough, she's been sleeping in her bed for 1.5 yrs already, and just last night she rolled out of it!

We bought a rail for my daughter when we converted and we used it for about a week. It was not only a pain to retrofit, but it was more for us than for than for her. If she fell out of bed, she'd fall all of 4 inches. Nothing to worry about. I'd go with a few pillows or even a big comforter folded on the floor for the first week and then ditch them all together. Good luck!

I would put some cushions/pillows down for now and see how it goes. If she keeps falling out, get the type that you can put under the mattress (wal-mart has them) or get a pool noodle (if you have one) and put it under the mattress on the edge so there is a 'hump' she has to roll over before falling off. Neither of my kids had a railing and only fell out out bed a handful of times (maybe 3-5 over 2 years) but we have carpet.
