Stress will cause clentching, no question. It can lead to more problems like TMJD. You may even be doing it at night while sleeping and wont even know it. You can see a dentist and get a nightguard made, I have one and it helped out a lot!!! I didnt have anymore jaw pain and headaches, but if I get really stressed out I noticed myself clentching and then I can put in my nightguard, also called a splint.

Hi E., I have been doing that for years. You can be under a lot of stress or you can be in pain. Mine is pain. If your pain level is high, like mine, you want fell it at first. I think this is a way for my body to let me know I an in pain, before it gets so bad that I have a hard time moving. Through a sleep study test, I found out that I have Fibromyalgia. I hope you find out what is causing it befor you damage your teeth like I did. God bless. M. H,

Hi E.,

I have been experiencing the same thing for the past few months. Although I am trying to catch myself when I tense up, I was still having terrible pain and headaches. As crazy as this may sound, I took Tylenol Arthritis Pain last night and had the best night's sleep I've had in months.

I know "exactly" how you feel. My dentist wants to send me to a surgical dentist. Not for the surgery, but for what they would know about clenching and TMJ. I can hardly afford the ever six-month cleanings I get! So, I'm happy to hear what others are telling you.

May God bless us both in this case, with no more clenching!

Dear E.,

Teeth clenching and grinding come from stress or tension. I have the same problem. It has been two years since I have had that problem. I try to relax whenever possible but it is not easy. I would suggest you mention that to your dentist, who will probably give you some sort of retainer. Or maybe they already have a better advanced solution nowadays. I hope this helps.

Good luck
S.

I do this when I get really stressed. I didn't know for a while that I was even doing it because it was at night when I was sleeping. I tried the mouth guard thing and found it akward and uncomfortable. My doctor prescribed some muscle relaxers to take at night before going to bed. That's certainly not a long term fix. But it gets me through when it gets bad and prevents my jaw from locking up on me. In the meantime, I try to deal with whatever is stressing me out and really try hard to be aware of when I find myself clenching. If you tune in to your body, you will find that you can almost predict when you're about to clench up and take a moment to gather yourself and try to relax.
