Hi Moms,

I have 2 questions for you- when did you give your child his/her 1st haircut? (ie- how old was your child for the first haircut?) And where did/do you take your children to get their hair cut? Or are you a brave do-it-yourselfer? (I don't think I am!)

My 11 1/2 month old son's hair is getting really long. The top has to be combed over to the side quite a bit and the hair in the back is curling up it's so long! It's cute...and I'm realy in no hurry. But some days it goes look "shaggy". Or am I being ridiculous?!? He can't even sit still, so I have no idea how he'd get a cut. (I do have a Disney World first haircut fantasy- but I don't think I'll wait that long! lol)

Just thought I'd see what your experiences were with getting young children's haircut and where you did it.

Thanks!

You didn't say where you live, but DO NOT go to Pigtails and Crewcuts in Dyer, IN on route 30. They have the chairs and videos and that kept my daughter still and happy, but you would have thought the girl cutting my daughters hair had never done it before. Her bangs were crooked when we got home. I had to cut it again and because I had to make them straight to the short length, her bangs came to the middle of her forehead. It looked so strange. She has had her hair cut professionally since then, and we just went to a regular salon. They gave her a sucker and she did just fine (but she is now 2). For the year between her first haircut and that one, I just trimmed her bangs as home because I was so disappointed.
I also mentioned it to my hairstylist and she said that they used to recommend there, but have heard nothing good lately so now they DO NOT recommend it any longer. The place looks like a ghost town now.

Hi! I got my son's first haircut just before his 1st birthday - my husband held him while they cut it. We just went to great clips and they were WONDERFUL with him! They have quiet shavers & they knew how to "handle" him so he wasn't scared. We have since gotten it cut every month or so and he has NEVER had any problems (crying or getting upset). He is now 3 and we have a 7 month old who will get his first hair cut when he is 1 as well! Good Luck!

I had my son's hair cut at 6 months it was so long! He never lost his full head of hair from birth! I took him to the place where I get my hair cut I was much more comfortable with my hairdresser cutting his hair then a kids place. She was great and he still goes there we pay 15-20 for a haircut every 6 weeks.

We didn't cut our little guy's hair until he was 2...he has really curly hair so we were able to wait a lot longer than most people. We went to Kidsnips on Clybourn and I LOVED them. They were so great with him. They have cool chairs for them to sit in, and they have hundreds of movies the kids can pick from to watch when they are getting their hair cut. Also they give you a "first haircut" certificate, polaroid picture of him, and a balloon. :) Cost is about $20.

My boy's first haircut was at 21 months. Yes I know..I never had time and then he was a shaggy, bleach blonde boy of summer with his board shorts, he was so cute. We got it cut and in 20 minutes he went from my surfer baby to little boy. He is growing so fast.

No, you are not being ridiculous! My son's first haircut was at 15 months -- but it *definitely* could have been cut a month or two sooner, as he looked really, really shaggy! It's really up to you when you do it. I think the little boys look pretty cute when they are a bit shaggy. And, be prepared that a short haircut will make him look older!

I did both my children's first haircut at "Kid Snips." Every hair-cutting station has its own TV/DVD player. Hence, every child gets to select his own video and watch it during the haircut. This really helps keep my kids still during the cut -- they never realized what was really going on, and there were no tears. I tried taking my son to a regular, cheap haircut place for his 2nd cut and he completely freaked-out watching the women cut his hair (I had to take him home before the cut was done). So we've been back to Kid Snips.

However, places like Kid Snips are expensive -- usually around $16 + tip for a child. But for the first haircut I think I paid a couple bucks more and they put together a "certificate" with a clipping of hair and photographs during the cut as a keepsake.

Another thing I never knew -- boys typically need haircuts more frequently than girls, due to keeping a short haircut clean and neat.

My daughter was about 13 months when she got her first haircut. We took her to Snippets at Yorktown Mall. We take her every 2 to 3 months for a haircut to keep her bangs out of her eyes and keep the rest shaped nicely as it grows longer.

Snippets does a first haircut package where they actually video the haircut for you.

I took my daughter for her first haircut recently. I kept putting it off because she has such a sensitive scalp and cries whenever you brush it. Anyway I took her to one of those "Kid Snips" places where she got to sit in a fun car chair and watch a Disney video while they cut it. She did great, didn't shed a tear! They even took pictures and gave me a little baggie for the hair and a certificate to save in her baby book! The people that work at these places are used to cutting kids hair and your active son shouldn't be a problem for them. Good Luck!!

It's all a matter of personal preference and how fast your particular child's hair grows. I don't think anyone is going to look at your son's hair and think you're a terrible mother if you like it a bit wild and natural, even on a boy. Then again, I have a girl! She is not even 2 but has had the full head of hair that most 3 y/o have since she was 18 mo! I gave her her first hair cut when she was about 18mo old. I felt this was way too young but her hair was forever in her face. I left it dry (it's shorter when dry so if you cut it wet, you'll be left with shorter hair than you expected after it dries!) Also, the sharper the scissors the better so you get it done with as few snips as possible. I combed her hair and let it fall naturally where it would and then just trimmed some bangs onto her forehead just enough to keep it out of her eyes. I always snipped the hair a little at a time and never took off quite as much as I thought I should lest I cut too short. I did not fuss with any other hairs on her head. She stood on a step stool in front of the sink facing me and there was no drama. If you want a more elaborate hair cut than this and you aren't very confident, I would take him to a pro lest you snip his ear. There are many places that specialize in hair cuts for kids. Good luck!

We went to a Kid's place for the 1st haircut for my kids...now we go to Great clips or somewhere like that. The 1st time my oldest was the age of your son...for #2 he was a little older b/c he had such thin hair.

Our 1st expereience was filled with screaming and crying...even with all the kid stuff to distract him. It took him going 4 or 5 times to be okay with it. The kid friendly places have stuff for the kids to look at (TV's, balloons, fun chairs, etc.) That helped a little.

Good Luck!

Hey A.,
I think it depends on the child and honestly I can't remember how old my son was when we first got it cut. I just went to the woman who cut mine and it wasn't a good time at all let me tell you. My son is very sensitive and even to this day (he's almost 5), is not a big fan of getting a hair cut.
I've never been, but this place looks cool. I think its a bit pricey, but they specialize in kids cuts and I think they take a picture and make a little keepsake for you. http://kidsnips.com/home.htm I hope this helps!
blessings,

With my daughter we didn't go until she was 2! With my son, we took him right before his first birthday, so he would look cute for his 1-year pics. We went to Kid Snips on Clybourn. Ask for Miriam...she does a great job on his hair! The great thing about kid salons, is they anticipate the moving around that kids do, since they don't really understand to sit very still. And, there is so much fun associated with the kid haircut places...fun chair to sit in, fun movies to watch, a toy at the end, etc. Now that my son is two, he sits on my lap at Great Clips and we have a regular stylist that knows us....but, I would say the first few haircuts, go to a kid salon until he gets used to it.

Kid Snips, they can sit in a car, jeep, train, etc. and watch a movie. All 3 of my boys had haircuts before they were one and did great.

We go to Kidsnips in Oakbrook and love it. My oldest was about 20 months, and my youngest was 17 1/2 months for their firsts. The kids sit in little cars and get to watch a video or play a video game while their hair is being cut. They even have a special little certificate that they create for the first haircut, including a picture, to commemorate the occasion. Afterwards, the kids get a balloon and can pick a small toy from the toy chest.

Well, if you do decide to do it yourself, you can always cut while he is watching tv. Wait for him to stop moving his head. If you can't deal with that, there is always a barber or kid snips.

We started taking my son to Great Clips at about 10 months old because he was looking pretty shaggy. He sits on my husband's lap so he feels very safe and secure. For the first haircut, he (shockingly!) didn't move much. He had more of a deer-in-the-headlights reaction and just stared. (The lady said that happens a lot, just for the first one.) But after that first one, he has become a squirmy worm. Our solution is to have him still sit on Daddy's lap, and then I bring Craisins and feed both of them by hand, since their hands are stuck under the cape. My son thinks it's silly, and since we don't give him sweets very much, he's more about the Craisins than the haircut. It works.

Bring a camera and have fun!

I got my 20 month-old son's hair cut at 10 months. He was born with a full head of hair and though some fell out, it got really long very quickly. We could have cut it sooner, but I didn't think he was ready, and there was no way I was getting scissors that close to his face.
We went (and still go!) to Klips for Kids in Schaumburg. He loves the girl who cuts his hair and she's very good. I have no idea how she gets it straight when he's never still! He was fine the first two times we went, had fits the next two times, but now is fine with it.

We took both kids for their first haircuts shortly before their first birthdays. I'm definitely not a do-it-yourselfer. We took our son to Snippets on Clybourne. NOT worth the money! Especially if your son won't sit still. Ours cried the entire time. We took our daughter to a $6 place where the woman didn't really speak english. She did an okay job and it was only $6! Now we've found a haircut place that charges about $10 in lincoln square near our house. it's not a "kids" place but they did a nice job... better than both the other places. At Snippets you're paying for the atmosphere... the video games, toys....

We didn't do the first haircut until he was almost 2 years old, as he really didn't need it. When he started getting the 'grandpa comb-over look' we knew it was time. I don't really like long hair on little boys (just my preference) so when it started getting out of control was when we made the appointment.

My kid is the type to never really sit still, so no way on earth was I going to take scissors to his head. Poor thing would have look butchered! We went to Cool Cuts for Kids in Orland Park and had a wonderful experience. Yes it is more expensive. He got to sit in a fire truck chair that had a 'seat belt' and also got to pick a video to watch while the cut happened (he watched Thomas). He was also getting his hair cut by someone who only worked on children and was used to squirming, potential screaming, not being terribly cooperative, etc. He was totally thrilled to be in the fire truck chair and then spent the entire time with his right arm pointing at the video screen. He was fixated on the movie, which allowed the cut to happen nicely (I'm not normally a 'tv babysitter' type, but with sharp objects near his head, I'm down with whatever distraction works!).

Good luck - the first haircut for us was a lot of fun! Bring your camera!

I was where you were two months ago. I HAD to cut my son's hair, it was out of control. He was 11 1/2 months and I already need to cut it again. I held off as long as I could and wanted to hold off prior this first birthday pictures (so I took them early).

I took him to Boozle B's in Plainfield. They did a nice job in keeping him entertained. The only problem was it was not cut even in the back, but he was not sitting still enough for them to fix it. His safety came first.

Good luck and have a nice party!

With my younger son we went for the first time at about 10 months...he has a CRAZY amount of hair. Just make sure to tell them not to take all the length off in the back if you still want it to look like "baby" hair. They trimmed it up for me in the front to it wasn't in his face and also trimmed up the side a little. Last time we went (he was about 14 months) they took off a whole inch in the back and it still looked like baby hair (and he still has his curls). Just make sure to go somewhere you trust. My older boy we didn't take until he was 18 months or so but he didn't have as much hair. I took both of them for their first cut to a "kids" hair salon where they can sit in the fun car and watch a video while they are getting it cut. That way they barely even realize something else is going on. We have gone to Cool Cuts, but now I do my older boy at home and the little one I just take to my regular lady who cuts my hair at the Hair Cuttery cause it is cheaper and I trust her. But you never know how your child is going to react. Both my boys were good about getting cuts, but some kids throw a holy fit. So that is why I say the kids place for the first cut. Then you can figure out if you need to take them somewhere like that or if you can go a cheaper route.

If you think it's too long, go ahead and get it cut. Many boys get 1st cut at age 1. We go to Kid snips in South Barrington, corner of 59 and 72 and love it. They have cool chairs to sit in, movies on the stylists counter, take their picture, give you a clip of their hair and a first haircut certificate. And they send you a coupon for another haircut. We love them!

I tried to hold out for my son's first birthday, but couldn't - it was way too long! So we cut it around 11 months. We did it ourselves while he slept. And I hate to admit it, but he's 2 and we still cut his hair in his sleep. I'm definitely no professional, and it may take a couple touch-ups the next few nights to look right, but overall it works out okay. I use scissors, which is why I do it in his sleep - I'm afraid I'll nip him when he squirms. We get compliments all the time on how cute his hair looks, and I'm no professional by any means!! I'm actually always shocked when people compliment it. I've just paid attention when I've gotten my hair cut, and have watched the other stylists nearby cut short hair. (My niece uses a razor on her 2-yr-old's hair, and it looks adorable.) I know we need to introduce him to a traditional haircut, but I know he won't sit still for it and will cry & scream the whole time, and I'm scared it will be a horrible experience for everyone! So basically, I'm no help to you! I guess I came here for recommendations too - ha ha!

J was about 18months old - his hair was getting scraggly and had a few curls. People always thought he was a girl, because of his curls and he was blessed with lots of LONG eyelashes. As soon as we cut it though = that was the end of any curls. His hair is straight.
I let my sister do the honours for the first cut - I couldn't quite do it - I think I my have shed a few tears - the end of my "little" baby! I have kept the curl in a little box. Neither of us are haircut specialists. I have experimented though, with scissors not a razor. I cut his hair into shape and then go through and "texturize" it. Couldn't see the point of taking him to a "salon". Haven't done a bad haircut yet - but I have comfort in knowing it will grow back !#*!, if I do mess up. I sit him on a high chair, have a craft plastic sheet on the floor and a haircut poncho to divert hair to the floor. We switch tv on as a treat, and I let him watch while I cut. He is 4 1/2 now. If you cut his hair, you might want to do it a few weeks ahead of photos etc, so it has time to settle down and not have that "just cut" look. Don't forget to take plenty of photos of his first haircut!!!

Well if you think you are ridiculous you will REALLY think I am ridiculous. I had my son's hair cut for the first time at 10.5 WEEKS! Yes, WEEKS, not months. He was born with a full head of really dark out of control hair. He basically had a mullet on his way out of the womb. I really could have gotten it cut at about 5 weeks, but I kept thinking that it might fall out as some babies hair does. But, nope, his hair was there to stay!! I took him to Cool Cuts for Kids and he did awesome. He sat on my lap...they have a special gown that fits over both of you so the hair doesn't get all over. It only took a few minutes to cut his hair. They did a great job. They have tvs there and can put on Baby Einstein or some other kid videos to keep him occupied. He has had EIGHT hair cuts now and he is only 16 months old today. Ha!! Good luck!
