Child Has Hives

My son broke out in hives when he was 10 months old. It started with what I thought were bug bites on the back of his legs and when he woke up the next morning they were on his face and were the size of silver dollars. I took him to his pedi who recomended a blood test to see if it was food related. It did not show what caused those hives but we did find out he was allergic to peanuts. My pedi is positive it was food related and claritin worked wonders. Benadryl did not really help as I had given it to him before he went to bed and woke up worse in the a.m. But claritin cleared him up within 2 hrs. And this was after both his ears swelled up and he looked like Dumbo!!!

My husband had hives as a child. Is your child allergic to any foods? Have you tried any new foods lately? You might want to keep a food log and try to track any new foods you try. Could be some sort of food allergy. My husband is allergic to eggs and nuts, so we have to watch the food carefully. When he eats eggs his tongue swells and he gets hives and also when he eats nuts. Did your child eat something she wasn't suppose to?

What about detergent, have you tried a new detergent? since she is lying on the sheets, that could be a possibility. It could be the fragrance of the liquid detergent that you are washing clothes and sheets in.

We are seeing a Dermatologist right now for our son and myself. I would recommend switching to a Free and Clear Detergent and not using any dryer sheets. You could also switch soaps to nothing with fragrance. We use Aquaphor gentle wash and it is Fragrance free. Watch your lotion also and see if there is any fragrance in there. We use Moisturel, which doesn't have fragrance and doesn't clog your pores either.

The worst thing you can do is give your daughter a warm bath.
It has happened 3 different times to my son. My son is now 12.
Your daughter will be fine. It is hard to figure it out whether it is an allergic reaction or viral.

Just follow doctor's instructions.

I get hives that fast if I eat something I'm allergic to or like today when it was a little breezy and all was blooming etc. It's absolutely horrible.

If the doctor says it's okay, give her the baby Benadryl. And no hot bath. In fact, skip the bath, cool or hot. Just wipe her off where needed. Keep her cool and no hot clothes.

Good luck, and I hope it's a passing allergy phase and it's not the start of some bad allergies.

Consider food allergies. My son had hives that spread very rapidly at this same age and we found out he was allergic to soy (and many other things.) I use Hylands Hives (homeopathic) tablets to settle the rash/itch. I would try to determine the trigger, though. Could be a stronger response next time if it is a serious allergy. We carry an epi-pen now.

My 6 year old daughter had a horrible breakout of hives recently. We went to the emergency room. It turned out to be the chemicals that the landscapers had put on the lawn the day before. We put her in a warm shower and then put DermaCort on her hives to help with the itch. By the next day, it was gone. (DermaCort it a Melaleuca product. It don't sell the products, but have used them for years and they are wonderful!)

If it is an allergy, it could be anything from a new lotion, to a food, to the chemicals in a new carpet, soap, or cleaner. I hope she feels better soon. :)

My children are allergic to EVERYTHING it seems! We get hives - a lot! It really isn't much to worry about. Typically if you go to the doctor or ER they dose them with Benadryl, so save yourself the money and think about anything new that may have been introduced into their environment. It could be food, detergents, medications, etc. I wouldn't stress about it...just know that once it happens it seems like it happens often!

It's called Viral Anatham or Anathem. Jordan had it twice. One time worse than the other. She has the little hives on her body adn whne she got it at like 5 months she was rolling in her crib because she was itching up a storm. We bathed her in aveeno and gave her some over the counter medicine for the itch and put a little clear calomine lotion on her. Keep her drinking clear juice. It will go away soon. Did she get a little fever as well.
