Cat Behaving Badly

I'm at a loss. Our cat has been spraying/peeing on our new carpet in the basement since we brought home our son. I don't know what to do! We made it a point to play with him/love/cuddle him so this would not happen, but it doesn't seem to make a difference I still keep finding spots on the carpet. I've tried vinegar and carpet cleaner but I'm afraid our new finished basement is going to start to smell like cat pee! My husband is quite upset and wants to give up the cat, but I won't allow it. Please help me I don't know what to do to prevent this!!

What can I do next?

I would take the cat to the vet. It could be sick.
Also, if you've moved its litter box or changed litter brands, sometimes they don't like that.
And if it's not fixed, getting it fixed might help.
Maybe the vet will have some advice for you too.
Good luck :)

Just like everyone else said, I would definately get the cat checked out by your vet and make sure there are not any physical problems. There are a bunch of things that could be wrong. If it turns out to be a behavioral issue you may want to see a veterinary behavioralist. They can prescibe medications, but also give you ways the alter your house or your behavior to help. There is a specilist at Oakland Veterinary Referral services in Bloomfield Hills.

One of the first signs that a cat is sick is that he/she will start to spray. Often times they have a bladder infection. Make sure you have your cat checked out by your vet. Also, make sure his litter box is cleaned at least once a day. Cats can be very particular about their cat boxes. Also, I found the product "Get Serious" at PetsMart and can't say enough about it - it is great for pets and kid accidents - eliminates odor (which is important so that your cat doesn't return to the same spot), removes stains, etc. with very little effort on your part! Hope this helps.

Here's a Carpet Stain Remover I received from a Professional.
32 oz Spray Bottle
12oz Distilled White Vinegar
1 Small Drop of Fresh Dish Soap
Fill with Water & Mix
Spray on Stain
Blot and Wipe in one direction only.

Your vet will have suggestions for you.
I had to add another litter box to the house, use only non-scented litter and feed the cat canned food only.
Keep your bedroom doors closed, you don't want to have to replace mattresses like we did.

I agree, go to the vet. My cat acted out in a similar way after we had our first born in August 2006. I was abruptly away from home and in the hospital for a lengthy stay. This stressed him out and then when I came home with a baby, he had about had it. He started vomiting all over our basement. By early November, I took him in and after some expensive blood work and abnormal findings, I was glad to hear that it was just stress. We had to give him some medication and change his diet. He is fine now and when we brought home our second daughter this August, I started looking for the same signs but we are good this time. Just play it safe and take him in.

My cat was fine with my daughter until she started to crawl, then she started peeing EVERYWHERE in the house. She would go next to the baby and look at me, then poop on the carpet. Definitely a message. I tried for six months to get her to stop, but finally was told by the vet that she probably would never stop so we had to get rid of her. I still miss her, but having a child crawling and puddles and poop all over the place was getting hard. Here's the stuff I tried -- I took her to the vet first to make sure she wasn't sick. He gave me some advice, but told me that he had 3 cats and they often used his bed as a litter box. I tried putting a litter box in several rooms, esp by the front door which was her favorite spot. She would go next to it. I got an expensive plug-in with pheromones that guaranteed that a cat would not mess within 50 feet of it. She continued to go right next to it. This cat was already fixed, but maybe getting him fixed would help. I know it's heartbreaking to have to consider getting rid of the cat. I still miss my Maddie cat.

Pre-babies we had an issue w/our cat. She was about 1 1/2 and she started spraying...most of the time in the same room and general area. We tried everything, vet check, meds, new food, new litter, $60.00 a can pharamon spray, kitty prozac...nothing worked.
There is NO getting rid of the smell either. Maybe you can reduce it...but your cat will always smell it.
I know it's sad...but you may not have a choice but to give your cat up. Of course I would try every other option first.
Good luck and I hope it works out positive for you.

We had this problem with our cat.The only difference is that we had our kids already when we brought her in.I guess she decided she did not like our oldest daughter and started to pee on all her stuff.Clothes and her bed.We are on our second set of mattresses. It is impossible to get that smell out.But we were at our wits end with her and my husband wanted to get rid of her too.Well she was not fixed and so I decided as a last stitch effort to try that.It worked. We got her fixed and have not had an issue since. So if your cat is not fixed it is definately worth the money..
