I have started taking probiotics and would love to find some for my children who are 6yrs and 4yrs old. Also, do you have any suggestions of natural supplements to keep them healthy during the school year?

What can I do next?

Hi G.,
Whole Foods has a new probiotic juice called Good Belly - three different flavors - it tastes great!

Hi G. -

I give my son a chewable ACIDOPHILUS. The one I use is by Nature's Bounty and I get it at Walgreens. It is strawberry flavor so he loves it.

We use Renew Life Flora Bear when in a pinch. I got it at Whole Foods. Usually I make my own pro-biotic drink by purchasing young coconuts (the white ones- I usually get a case (9) at at time), cutting them open and fermenting the water inside. You can get packets of culture starter from www.bodyecology.com (you'd want the milk cultures). You can also culture the coconut meat and make cultured, pro-biotic yogurt. I buy the veggie cultures for that so that my son will get the healthy milk and veggie bacteria. I also make cultured veggies (receipe on the site), to add to salsa and other protein dishes. This is way healthier than a vitamin, but it does take time to prep. I hope that helps!
blessings,
J.

G. G. G. FROM B'S PURSES!!! lol--Hey lady-I have been researching and trying different supplements/nutritional products for the better part of over 20 years!!

There are many different high quality probiotics-Floravits are excellent. I just came across a certified probiotic with live food and good flora cultures in there with The ACO, IFOAM and USDA organic stamp on it. The products are absolutely amazing. I signed up to get a discount and I will give you the code. Just email me:)

Don't forget about the discussion on nutritionals tomorrow morning and if you have to bring the kids-they are more than welcome!!

My son takes Udo's Choice Infant probiotics. I believe he will take this until he is 5. It comes in powder form and I give him 1/2 teaspoon with his morning milk. He had gotten a cold 2 weeks ago and it is pretty much gone already! It really does help!
We get ours at Fruitfull Yield in Lombard but I am sure you can find it at any health food store.
Let me know how it goes if you try it!

Shaklee has a probiotic called Optiflora. It has a patented absorption system, so delivery of the live cultures to the proper place in your system is guaranteed. Shaklee is the #1 natural nutrition company in the US. I would suggest giving your kids a high quality multi-vitamin (like chewable Ocean Wonders) in addition to the probiotic, and some extra vitamin C (Shaklee also has a chewable C) to also help boost their immune system. Not all vitamins are created equal, I highly recommend Shaklee's products. Check out www.shaklee.net/cpeterson.

My son takes Nature's Plus Animal Parade Acidophikidz, I got them from the website www.vitacost.com and we got 90 chewable vitamins for $9.61 - $14.60 with delivery. He loves them and asks for his vitamins everyday. Good luck, we have also tried the florasor, he liked them but if he didnt eat what we sprinkled it on it was wasted.

G.,
Good for you for taking your health seriously. What I have found with probiotics (and nutritional supplements in general) is to look at the science and research that a company has. What kind of testing do they do? How many scientists do they have on staff? Ask a ton of questions! Can a company guarantee the "live" probiotic to still be live once it gets to you . . .sure, it may have been live when they packaged it, but how long ago was that?

All this to say, do your research. If you'd like to know what I have found, I would be happy to share with you what I have found.

Florastor Kids is my favorite - we have a pharmacist order it for us (Osco or at the doctor's office). In a pinch, we've used Baby Bifadactyl which we've gotten at Whole Foods.

There are a few great brands a whole foods I recommend to patients. Otherwise your chiropractor should have one that they carry. I carry one that I like by standard process.
Good luck on your search.

My two boys ages 9 and 7 and I are seeing Dr. Susan Kelenyi in Glen Ellyn. She is a holistic practitioner and chiropractor, and she is great! I wouldn't be comfortable giving you just the name of a probiotic, but if you see her, she would be able to tell you exactly what your childen may or may not need. She works on the whole person, and will help you find out what is most appropriate for your children. Her number is ###-###-####. Good luck!

Lifeway's ProBugs, or Kefir (in many yummy flavors). Also some organic yogurts. Good to help keep them healthy, and also to use after kids are sick (and are allowed to drink milk products again) to help replenish good bacteria in the intestines.
