Cakes in Different Shapes

I was wondering if any of you creative bakers could help me out. My son will be 3 in April. He is really into Cars and Diego, dinosaurs and Bob the Builder. I would like to make a cake into one of these characters but have no idea where to start. I had thought about having him help me make it because he loves to be in the kitchen with me. Does anyone have a good website they use? What about patterns? It would only need to feed 12-15 people. Thanks in advance for your help.

just tonight i found a great tutorial on making a lightning mcqueen cake... i haven't tested it out myself obviously, but look like it's well-written and certainly makes an adorable cake! http://peasepudding.wordpress.com/2009/01/31/lightning-mc...

The character pan's are great and they come with instructions for the frosting etc. I always make a few dozen cupcakes to go along with the cake as they are often too small to serve a large group of people. Usually the adults don't seem to mind a cupcake instead of a slice off of the big cake.

Familyfun.com also has some creative cake ideas.

Hi T.,
My sister uses different shaped pans and then cuts them into the shape she needs. After she cuts them and adds frosting the are very cute. When she did need a car she did find a plain car shape and personlized it with color.
Just go for it because when your kids look back at the pictures they will love how much time you put into it just for them.
Best Wishes!

You can buy pans in those shapes from Wilton.com or in Michaels or JoAnn Superstores. They run about $15 for the pan. If you follow their directions to pipe the stars on for the design, expect to spend another $15 for tips, disposable bags, and the frosting dye. It isn't as hard as it seems. You fill the bag with frosting, hold it vertically, and squeeze dots all over the cake. Cakecentral.com also has plenty of pictures and ideas of whatever kinds of cakes you like...

Go to Michael's, they have a great Wilton selection and have cake pans for all those characters you're looking for. Just pick one and the directions are on the label for how much cake mix to use. So easy!

Check out the Family Fun website below. They have tons of great ideas using the cake pans you already own. Over the years, I have made many of these for both my kids. My kids and I even made an Ipod cake for my husband last year! Some are trickier than others so if your son is going to help you, keep that in mind.
Have fun!
