Hi Moms,
I am looking for information concerning boarding schools for teens specifically a male with academic problems. We would be most interested in schools in California specifically Southern California but will expand for the right school. We would also be interested in information out there if they exist on charter schools for teens with academic difficulties. Thank you in advance for any information you extend!

What can I do next?

Hello Y.. I'm not sure if you want to send your son away because of his academic problems, or not, but have you considered the Job Corps? I am considering sending my daughter there. It's not exactly a boarding school, but the kids do live there (I believe they can come home on the weekends) and they go to school (there) and are taught a skill, something they can take with them when they leave, like a trade of some sort. Not sure if that's what your looking for or not. The other good thing, is it's free. From what I've heard. I keep "almost" enrolling my daughter, but changing my mind because I think I would miss her too much.

I would check out Dunn School in Los Olivos. It has an LD program that I understand is pretty good. However, the dean at the time made some pretty questionable (cruel, but not perverted or anything) comments to a boy I knew. The boy was mischievous, but never deserved the comments. Unfortunately, the man was (is?) in a high position of authority and used that to the outer limits of what's considered acceptable. On the other hand, there was some fantastic faculty members who were very nuturing and really helped many kids excel. There is also Westmark and Windward, non boarding schools in L.A. that also have specialized academic programs.

Does your son have learning disabilities? Have you had him tested? There is a school called Bridges in Studio City for gifted kids with disabilities. Maybe they know also where to get help.

Dear Y.,
Please be encouraged, a friend of mine had to do this for her 16 year old daughter. She sent her to a camp in Colorado. Guess what that daughter is now graduating college and tells her mom that was the best thing that ever happened to her.

Check Sunset Magazine.....they have a whole directory of those places....go to their website
