Hi. I'd like some info and your personal experiences on birth control. In the past when I have taken the pill it has made me moody and hard to live with. I'm considering getting back on the pill before or right after my husband returns from deployment this summer. We have 4 kids, and most likely aren't going to have anymore. Sterilization is really not a route either of us want to take. An IUD is completely out of the question because no matter how safe they supposedly are now, I just don't trust them after having a friend suffer permenate damage and the loss of a baby years ago. I also don't want to do shots, or an implant. I'm overweight, so a patch is most likely not an option for me. I do not smoke, and rarely ever drink. However, I think at my age, and that fact that I'm overweight, I don't even know if a doctor would put me on the pill. What I would like to know though is what you have taken. Have you taken birth control pills that made you terribly moody? What did you switch to? Is it better? Also, I never liked the way the ones I've taken made me feel like I was pregnant every month. I have very heavy periods. One day of each cycle I don't even want to leave the house because I have to change a super size tampon about every 45 minutes to an hour. I realize you all aren't doctors, but I'd like to be "armed" with some info before I head to the doctor, if that's what I decide to do. We just don't care for condoms at all, no pleasure there. This would be so much easier if the doctor had taken my uterus like I requested during the last c-section. She laughed at me and said I might want more children.

What can I do next?

Try a tried and true low dose Birthcontrol pill. STAY AWAY from ANYTHING not 10 years used here in the US. So many people want the newest and best things, come to find out they almost all have problems, side effects, and NO long term effect studies to read about. My personal advice, stay away from anything that keeps you from your monthly period. No matter what anyone says, not shedding is NOT healthy. Your body is very understanding, but there are some things we were designed to do, and that is to clean out our uterus every month. I understnad how the pill works, and it is not a natural shed, but it is allowing our bodies to function the way it is designed too.

I had the depo shot for a year a while ago. And while it has been around for over 10 years, I honestly havent met anyone who hasn't had terrible side effects from it. My sister has an IUD, and she said childbirth was less painful. The insertion was agony for her, and almost a year of knock down on the sofa 8+ day periods she has finally started to not hurt so often. The scary thing is it has to come out in a 8 years, she is dreading that.

Which brings me back to old reliable pill. The studies have been so favorable in the extra protection the pill hormones give us in cancer ETC is really encouraging. Like I said tell the doc of your symptoms of what your last pill gave you. There are so many types you will definately find one to work. Good Luck, and thank you to your husband for his service to keep us all safe. My good friends deployment ends today, he was in Mosul.

Please read below about the withdrawl method recommended by another mama. This is taken from http://www.contracept.org/withdrawal.php

"This method is estimated to have a 27% failure rate annually among typical users. That means that every year, over 1 in 4 people using withdrawal as their only method of birth control will get pregnant. Failure rates will be lower for couples using withdrawal in combination with another method. Perfect users can expect a failure rate as low as 4%, which actually compares favorably to many other methods. See table of contraceptive failure rates... Withdrawal has a 31% annual failure rate for teens because they typically have less practice using this method effectively. More about birth control failure rates for teens and young adults... "

Dear Kathy,

Such good questions. We have three kids, 5yo, 4yo, and 20 month old. I am 36 and do not use any contraception, we never did. When I was in college I used a birth control pill called "Lo-Estrine" or something like that. I wore contact lenses and this pill had a lower estrogen content allowing me to keep wearing the lenses. Nowadays, we practice the pull-out method, and luckily it has worked. My husband has great control and we are careful at every step of the way. Having another child for us would be a blessing, yes, however, financially strapping. Good luck and happy love making! -C. R.

I would suggest looking into Novo-Ring. I used it between my first and second. I stopped and got pregnant intentionally. I have been known to act extra moody/crazy on the Pill so haven't tried many other types of pills. I had non-stop period w/ deop shot. Best of luck.

I have never used any form of artificial birth control and never would. Too many hormones, chemicals and risks to you and any potential babies you may want in the future. We use the Fertility Awareness Methid which is a form of natural family planning. Many people think its the rhythm method, but its more complicated than that, and more effective! When used correctly, it is MORE effective than the pill...over 99% effective to be exact! I love it and wouldnt trade it for anything in the world. It has taught me about my natural body, my natural cycles and how to plan. I recommend the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. Its a great place to start to learn how to use this method. Its very empowering. If you want any help or have any questions about it, message me! Good luck!

Well you have listed all the possibilities of birth control at this stage as well as stated your preference/s. I can tell you that the condom is very effective and safe if used the right way. With the current difficulties you explained tryiny the condom will not hurt. I have been using that method for over 3 years. yes you have to choose a brand that you are comfortable with and of course your husband must have a say in its use as well. Not all guys buy into this easily!!But you have to let him understand what are some of the problems you have as well.

I didn't like birth control for the same reasons you mentioned... I used "Lo-Ogestrel" or something like that about 4-5 years ago. Now we've decided that whatever happens, happens... but I did read the Garden of Fertility, probably similar to "Take Charge of Your Fertility", and it was great. Really helped me understand my cycle. I totally recommend reading one of those books before just supressing all the stuff that naturally occurs- you might begin to have more faith in a fertility awareness method since there are no side effects and it's just as effective as most birth control when practiced properly.
