First of all, thank you all who talked ot me about the possibility of eating disorders. My oldest is fine, just odd, and has been eating more than I knew about. She works and I don't see her much, and her doctor said that shes boarderline underweight, but she's always been so, plus its summer and her weight fluxuates a lot. I guess now her clothes just bring it out more. I think the younger one may though, and she is going to see a counselor and a nutritionist till we get everything settled.

Whats the scairest thing you ever went through with your chilldren?

What can I do next?

Scariest thing ever was when my daughter (2 at the time) ran off in a parking lot and right into the path of a large cargo van that couldn't see her. Fortunately he could hear me screaming "Stop" at her, and slammed on the breaks.

Another scary event was when my son was in 1st grade. I had pneumonia and was a few minutes late on picking him up, and he decided to walk (we didn't live in walking distance and he didn't know the way). Called the police and everything before a parent in the neighborhood saw him wandering and brought him back to the school.

The time when my son had an allergic reaction to a med. He broke out with a full body rash, swollen cracked lips and super high fever. The doctor told me that if it got any worse we would have to admit him to the hospital. They told me the things to watch for were spots on the eyes which could cause permanet damage, and watch for oozing sores because sometimes they get as bad as burns and can leave permanent scarring! They did blood work, Xrays, everything trying to figure out what was wrong with him. He was 6 at the time.

When my 9 month old 'ate' a fish hook. I just posted something else on here this morning about taking my son to the ER for something else and got some really awful answers... but this morning was NOTHING in comparison to the fish hook thing. The fishing poles were secured to one side of the car, the babys car seat was on the other. Somehow, ONE pole got loose, and I hear my son scream. I knew he had hooked himself, but figured it snagged his hand. WRONG. Up through the top palate and out the front of his gums, right between the teeth. My fiance almost passed out. My son wasn't even in pain; he was SUPER mad that I was holding him down! Way more traumatic for us than it was for him. I had a big ol' heart attack when we got home!!

When my oldest was an infant, they thought she had luekemia. Not fun. I was 19 at the time.

When I was preggers with my second, they told me the baby had cleft lip and cleft palate. Showed me where on the ultrasound and everything. I was 21. I had totally mentally prepared myself for this imperfect baby who would require surgery and lifelong speech therapy... SHE WAS PERFECT WHEN SHE WAS BORN!! She just has this teeny button nose and bird lips ;)

ALSO: When my baby brother was about 4, long story short, he got smashed in the face with a golf club. Went right through his cheek. My parents were at the neighbors. I was 11. Called 911. I put my bare hand on his cheek to stop the blood... he was poking his tongue THROUGH THE HOLE and licking my hand. GROSS. My parents saw the ambulance and ran home and left with him. Come to find out, it was my 9 year old brother who hit him, and he was curled up in the fetal position in the front yard in total shock. THAT was the scariest for me because now, my parents were gone. He was bigger than I was, but I dragged him up to the second floor, threw him in the bathtub, and put the shower on as cold as it would get until he snapped out of it. He still wasn't 'there'. Called 911 AGAIN, and we all spent the day at the ER. 9 year old bro was fine, 4 year old needed almost 100 stitches inside and outside of his cheek. (He later went back to where it happened and found the one tooth that got knocked out!! My mom still has it).

When my daughter was 6 days old. I had just finished breastfeeding her and put her down in her crib, turned off the lamp and was walking out of her room (it was 2:00 a.m.)... and I heard a wet sound (throwing up/spitting up). She was wearing a foam brace around her hips/waist due to slight hip dysplasia so picking her up was very awkward. You had to sort of scoop her up bottom end first since they have NO neck control that tiny. When I flipped on the light to pick her up and wipe her up, the process seemed to make it worse and she seemed to get a face full (mouth full/lung full???) of the spit up (she WAAY over fed and there was a lot of spit up) and she started holding her breath and turning blue.
I was trying to clear her face/nose/mouth while simultaneously trying to hold her upright (balance more like, due to the foam brace). She would scream loudly, face bright red, then stop suddenly and pass out. Repeat. Scream, pass out. Repeat. My mom (sleeping in the guest room next door to the nursery) got up, saw me, saw her, got my husband and he called 911 (mom didn't know our address, etc). She helped me get the brace off my daughter, so that I could hold her easier while I tried using the hospital issued aspirator in her mouth...
Opened the bedroom window and turned on ALL the house lights inside and out to make us more visible for the paramedics. They arrived a couple minutes later, but by then our daughter was awake and not passing out and turning blue anymore.
We went to the ER (in the ambulance because I was NOT strapping her into a car seat) to have x-rays of her lungs to be sure she didn't aspirate anything into her lungs.
Apparently, babies automatically/instinctively hold their breath when they have a blocked airway or whatever.. so she was doing that. Holding her breath until she passed out. Literally--whereupon she would start breathing again. Would regain consciousness and hold her breath again, etc.
The paramedics said that using the aspirator to clear her nose/mouth/throat of the spit up was the right thing to do and she was fine.
Nothing in her lungs per xrays at the ER.
But WOW was it every scary. While the paramedics were holding her in the nursery monitoring/assessing (while I went to put on clothes for the ambulance ride to the ER), I went to my room to change and collapsed on the floor. I just couldn't keep it together any more right then.
At least I know that I could keep it together IN THE THICK OF IT.... hopefully I'll never have to again. But with kids... well....

oldest one - passed out in a parking lot incoherant when she was 15 - it was mono
middle child, as a toddler, got away from me in a crowded mall while i was trying to get him and his carseated little sister off the carousel. Mall security found him.
youngest one - when we came home from vacation my husband left my 3 yr old in the car asleep. He was sleepy and loopy from the long drive and forgot to get her out and went in the house. I got my son out. He was on my side. I carried him in and put him in his pjs, helped him brush his teeth and put him to bed. I went to kiss my girl goodnight and she wasnt in her bed. I'm running around the house screaming at the top of my lungs and in the yard screaming for her. I finally opened the car door and there she was asleep. I was so furious with her dad that I still give him the silent treatment over it and that was years ago.

When I was pregnant with my first, they thought she had Down Syndrome. That was a scary couple of months. She was born with Spina Bifida Occulta (the mildest form). The MRI's and sedation and all those tests were pretty traumatic. She had to have eye surgery when she was 6 months old. Knock on wood, she has been just fine since about 6 months old with no further complications!

My son is only 3 and has been to the ER twice. He rode a 4 wheeler toy down a very steep hill at my parent's house before he was even a year old. That was a heart stopping few seconds. He hit a tree and came out of it with just a few scratches! He is such a daredevil, I know there will be a lot more ER visits in our future. I know everyone says this, but I mean it when I say HE IS ALL BOY!!!

I had my daughter in the room with me, we had just gotten through with a shower so we were both naked. I was rummaging through the dresser for a pair of undies and heard a huge crash. My 2 year old daughter toppled over a corner stand that we have and broke a snow globe...on her head. Not only that, she was laying naked in a pool of shattered glass. I picked her up quickly and took her back to the bath to get the glass of out of her hair and off her face. She had a few minor nicks and bruises but was other wise ok. Really we were lucky that the glass portion hit her, if it had been the base (which was jagged and very heavy) I am sure she would have concussed herself.

Once when she was an infant, she started to get really mad and she stopped breathing. Just about the time I was getting ready to do mouth to mouth she gulped and let out a huge scream. I cried for like half an hour, and I am SO not a crier.

That's about the worst for me. When I was 11 I was a victim of a hit and run. Luckily I was with a friend and she ran to a neighbors house and had them dial 911. Three surgeries on my shoulder and a pin had to be put in my knee. Spent a month solid in the hospital and a year in physical therapy. They never did catch the person either. My mom still won't talk about it.

Anything that I've had to go to the ER for that included stitches. Once when my eldest was only 18 months old she wandered off during a family picnic when we were at Harkness Park and my MIL and I both thought that my husband was watching the kids while we (us and my SIL's) were all putting food away. It took us a few minutes to find her trying to convince a bunch of teenagers to let her play volleyball 500 yards away. As I raced toward her and got up close I heard her say, "You wet me pway? I yike dat ball!" I don't think I ever hugged her so hard in my life.

My middle daughter... well, let's just say there are too many to count. She has a habit of dashing off in crowded parking lots, putting things in her mouth that require a call to Poison Control, she gets hurt a lot, and she doesn't answer when we call her. Once when she was 2 yrs old she unlocked the front door while I was cleaning the bathroom and she went to pick flowers in our neighbor's yard. Their landscaper brought her home, and he only brought her here because my front door was open and he saw the car in my driveway. He had no idea if she actually belonged here but was hoping. And the kid was in a diaper because she was in her naked phase and I had only just managed to get her in a diaper. That was pretty scary to realize she could get the front door unlocked, chain lock included. We installed an alarm system the next week.

To me the scariest thing is when they sneak out of the house. My 3rd daughter got out 3 times. We kept adding locks and changing locks and finally she passed through that age. Then one of my daycare boys got out onto the front porch and my very nice neighbor called to tell me he was sitting on the front porch. He was just totally enjoying himself for a few minutes. I would have freaked and went looking if she hadn't been so nice. She said she knew I never let the kids out and that it was a mistake so she called right away.

The next time it happened was a few years ago with one of my now 5.5 year olds. He was 2.5 I believe. He just turned the knob and walked out. He tried it once more and both times I caught him instantly. He never tried it again.

It's funny you just asked this because I'm sitting here trying to calm myself as one of our now almost 2 year olds just got onto the back porch. She didn't leave the porch. I know it could be worse. But I don't understand how people let 3 and 4 year olds, or any age for that matter, play outside without a parent.

Maybe I'm overreacting. But to me this is hugely scary.

needing an emergency c-section for my twins at only 27 weeks gestation was scary (they were due end of march and born late december at 1lb 13 oz and 2lb 6oz)... and then their 2.5 months in the NICU included some of the scariest moments as a parent so far...
other than that my son has given us one little scare after another... he got hit in the face hard with a softball... he stuck a metal hanger in his mouth at the store and cut his throat... fell with a toy drumstick in his mouth... he's fallen down the stairs... i'm glad his twin sister is an angel or i think i'd lose my mind lol
its amazing that he's so developmentally advanced (for being a micropreemie) with all the head injuries he's had! boys will be boys i guess :)

And i know what my mom would say hers was... my brother busted the back of his head open when he was maybe 13. He fell when he was skiing with his friends... the ski sliced his head open & he needed tons of staples up the back of his head... he came out of it just fine, but if i were her i'd have been terrified!

We were staying at a hotel in San Francisco. At the time my kids were 13, 11 and 7. They were sleeping in a separate (but connected) room, and the door between the rooms was open.
When I woke up in the morning I walked over to wake them up. The older two were still asleep but my 7 year old was gone. I FREAKED out, I was yelling at my kids, where's your sister?! then running down the hotel hallway in my nightgown like a crazy person.
I found her near the top of the stairwell, she said when she woke up she was bored and wanted to look at the view again (there was a big picture window there.) It was SO out of character, she was never one of those kids who took off in public places.
That was by far my biggest scare!
