Best Milk for Two Year Old?

My daughter turned 2 (24 months). Should I now give her 2% or skim milk? And do you know how much she needs? Doctor said 2% or skim are fine -- I was looking for some thoughts or brand ideas. I liked the Horizon with DHA added, but I can't find DHA added to skim milk? Thanks in advance for your thoughts...

What can I do next?

I have no advice regarding one with DHA in it! We just started our 28 month old on Oberweis Skim Milk. I like that it contains no antibiotics or hormones. It is not considered organic though since they will treat the cows with anitibiotics when necessary and that cow is taken out of the group of producers so it does not "taint" the milk. From the sounds of it they do some very strict testing as well and that has helped me to feel more comfortable using it! The biggest advantage is it tastes great coming from a glass bottle! MMMMMmmm! The only bad thing is it is expensive! For myself and my hubby we drink Trader Joes Skim milk and if our daughter runs out we give her some of ours then. Our baby girl gets the best of it all! lol (she has a rare disease and we have to be very careful what we give her) Check out the Oberweis website to read more about their product and even check out the delivery... seems cost effective although it is at the store we shop at so we do not do it.

Our Dr just recommended that we give our daughter no more than 8-12oz per day of SKIM milk. I do give her daily yogurt and sometimes cheese also so she is getting in her dairy but not through milk alone. If I remember correctly though I think he would prefer we do not give any milk at all- but that does not make sense to me but I am old school! Maybe it was juice though?!?!

I also believe the fats and DHA were most important in the first 2 years. Not that 2 is a "magic" number but that is suppose to be when they benefited the most from it! Maybe find a vitamin that she can take. Trader Joes has some good ones- I am out or I would see if they have it in there- that are affordable and taste good without any "bad" things in them. We have to watch dyes and perservatives so TJs was our best bet cost wise!

Good luck finding something that you are comfortable giving her! Blessings to you and yours!

Breastmilk is still best :)

Cow's milk is meant for cows only, but if you still want to, I would definitely go with organic. Horizon has been investigated lots recently because of their practices- you might try something with a better reputation like Stoneyfield Farms. Goat is closer to human milk if you feel like you can't do without dairy. We don't drink milk at all but use rice, almond, hemp, and some soy milk for baking, cooking, etc.

I have read bad things about the DHA additives- they can cause lots of GI problems in little ones.

Here is a source for goat's milk:

Good luck! :)

I will recommend Oberweis, we have that delivered to our home. But I am on 100% milk for my daughter. Our ped never told us to bring it down to 2%. She is already 3.

Maximum of three glasses a day.

I don't let me kids drink very much milk, mostly because it upsets their tummies if they have too much, a half gallon usually lasts the family a week to ten days. My daughter's main source of "milk" at this point is rice milk. My son drinks hormone free organic skim milk. There are several brands that are not badly priced in this category depending where you shop. I have found half-gallons of Oberweis for $2.50 at Super Target. Jewel usually runs sales on their half gallons of Wild Harvest Organics, on average I'd say $3.00. Fair Oaks Farm makes milk not treted with hormones, although it is not organic, and that runs between $2.50 to $3.00 a gallon. Trader Joes Organic half gallons are $3.00. I never have bought Horizon, beccause quite honestly they are usually the most expensive. If you are looking to add DHA to your child's diet, I beleive Flinstones, and Gummi Vites have multi vitamins with that in it now. Hope this helps :)

My Pediatrician told us to give our 2 year old whatever we usually drank in the house. For us, it's skim. My Ped also recommends she drinks no more than 20-24oz per day.

Despite drinking whatever skim milk was on sale for the most of my life, I won't give my kids anything but hormone-free milk. I have Oberweis delivered to our home. Oberweis dairy farmers never use artificial growth hormones and only provide milk that is free of antibiotics. But another good option I considered was the hormone-free milk from Costco.
