Hey mama's!
My husband has applied for a job that if he gets hired we will need to relocate (YAY) He feels that Georgia would be a good middle ground as his territories would be S.Carolina,Georgia and Florida. I have everything crossed in hopes that this happens!!!
We always like to be as informed as possible, so we have prematurely started looking around at cities in Georgia. Just to get an idea.
I'd appreciate any input from any of you that are familiar. We would love to be as close to the coast as possible. I saw that Brusnwick seemed quite affordable as far as house prices, but it looked like the schools didn't rank all that high. Not sure if the sight I was on was accurate?? Does anyone know about their school systems and where to look? In Ohio it's the Ohio report card rating.
I can't help to be sooooo hopeful and excited. I would LOVE to finally escape the COLD and LOOOOONG Ohio winters!!!!! And to live close to the Ocean...((sigh))
Wish us luck!!!! And again any info appreciated. best schools, communtiy feel, taxes. I'd also love to live somewhere where we could walk to shops, restaraunts etc. TIA :)

What can I do next?

We almost moved to Atlanta and consider Atlanta and some of the burbs to be great.

You mention his territory... if he is in sales, will be he driving, flying or both?

One reason we chose the Dallas area like we did in 1988 from NC, was due to the economy (business is booming here, our area never crashed like some areas did), schools in the Plano area which are top notch and the great airports. We are less than an hour from both DFW and Love Field. We fly a lot. I love this area because I can go to the airport and be on either coast within a couple of hours.

I lived in Atlanta for an internship when I was in college and I lived in the Buckhead area. I don't know anything about that area right now but I LOVED it at the time.

It's been so long since we've looked in Atlanta, I can't answer to the great areas specifically but I do know the airport is a huge factor for us.

Best wishes and keep us posted!

Brunswick is a bit of a pit. (My apologies to anyone who lives there.) The whole area used to smell bad due to a paper mill, but I don't think they have that problem any more. If you go to the mall or Walmart in Brunswick, you will be able to see a good sampling of the people of Glynn County. I lived in Brunswick for about three months while I was training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). The people of Brunswick typically weren't very fond of the people of FLETC.

If you can swing it, live on St. Simons Island! It is a very short drive from Brunswick, and it is beautiful there. A lot of FLETC instructors live there. Have you looked at Savannah? Also a wonderful place! Atlanta traffic is horrible, so I would avoid it if possible.

Good luck to you! I hope you find a happy new home!

check out http://www.greatschools.net it will help you find the right schools for you.

There's a lot of choices in Georgia....if you want near the coast - Brunswick and Savannah - which is a stones throw from the South Carolina border and near Hilton Head.

My sister in law lives in Actworth as well as a friend from high school - Sister in law does NOT have kids in the schools there - however - girlfriend does - her daughter graduated and is now going to Alabama - Crimson Tide...and her son graduates this year and has his choices of schools...helps that their parents are/were active in their education and they had good schools...

I've never lived there myself so I can't help you too much!

Hi D.,

Anywhere in Georgia is a short drive to the coast. I live in Columbus and it's 3.5 hours to my favorite beach in Florida. Brunswick is not an awful town but it wouldn't be my first choice. The panhandle of Florida would also be somewhat central too....The schools here in Columbus rank high so I've decided I cant trust those ranking systems. The southeast side of Atlanta is reasonable (McDonough) as well as the southwest side (Peachtree City). PC is a "golf cart" community and my husband loves it. Good restaurants and shopping.. I love Valdosta which is a football town. Really big into High School sports. Many NFL players have come from Valdosta.. Unless your in Valdosta, I wouldn't go any further south than Columbus. We here joke about the gnat line. Its an imaginary line where the annoying gnats don't come above. For people that grew up with them, they say its not bad but I couldn't handle it and guarantee being from Ohio, you wouldn't either, lol. Columbus was rated in the top 100 cities to live in by some magazine recently. Its home, so I love it...

Hope this helped!

I'm in Stone Mountain, just north east of Atlanta. We just moved here from California about 2 year ago.

We are about 3 hours from the coast. We are a quick drive to Hartsfield, Atlanta airport.

We have a great school district.
We have a great home too. Much more affordable than California. I truly miss the sunshine. Never thought it would snow and ice in Georgia, but it has this past few days has been brutal.

I am following your post as my husband is currently in Georgia interviewing for a job. We were considering checking out the Brunswick area. The job that my husband is interviewing for is in Jessup so we would need to stay fairly close to that area...at least withing out 45 minutes or so.

Congrats to you and your husband. I hope it all works out for you.
