Beach Vacation in Early May
Hi moms,
I am planning a beach vacation for early May of next year. My daughter will be almost three and my son almost 1 by then. Since it won't be quite summer I'm not sure how far South we should go to be able to enjoy the beach and go swimming. I was looking at Virginia and Chincoteague Island but it might still be too cold though it looks beautiful. Anyway, I'm not familiar with the beaches south of New England and would love to hear what you would recommend for late Spring.
Thank you in advance,
L.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to thank you for your advice on where to go in May. I will check out Treasure Island, Florida. That's a good idea if we really want to swim at the beach. Thanks! -L.

We went to Myrtle Beach in SC the week before Memorial Day this year. It was heavenly. Not too crowded yet, but the weather was perfect. My kids (3 & 1) wanted nothing at all do with the ocean, but loved the pool on a daily basis - which worked well since the water was barely fit for me and I'm an oceanlover. Good luck!

Hi L.,
I live in Pittsburgh and have vacationed in Delaware, North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina all of my life. Sorry to say, the Atlantic Ocean will be WAY to cold for swimming in early May--even in South Carolina. I'd say you'll have to go to Florida in early May if you want to actually go INTO the ocean. Otherwise, I'd pick a spot with good local activities/attractions and a heated indoor pool!
If you have flexibility with scheduling your vacation-consider going in September to enjoy discounted lodging rates before your kids are in school! My son is starting Kindergarten this year and we had to kiss our fabulous, cheap, uncrowded September beach vacations good-bye!

My brother and his family recently returned from Treasure Island, Florida. They went May 11-17. It is on the Gulf side. Daily temps were mid to high 80's. They didn't indicate the water temp was too cold to enjoy. They said it was a nice family area with a quiet beach.

Hi L., My husband and I took several trips to the Outer Banks in early to mid May before our son was born. The weather is hit or miss, usually very windy, cold at night and sometimes during the day even in the sun. The water is definitely too cold to swim in that early. I would suggest to keep going south. Good luck and have a great time.
