Does he eat meat? He might have some meat in between his teeth. Try flossing his teeth on a regular basis along with the brushing!?
My 2 yr old has some pretty terrible breath. I brush his teeth with toddler toothpaste especially before bed and I have even tried brushing his tongue a little bit. After his morning milk, he has water with a splash of juice for during the day and he doesn't consume a lot of sugar food wise. I know tonsils can cause bad breath but his seem to be normal in size. Any other ideas or suggestions?

Hi V.. My response is purely anecdotal and is drawn from a story my dad used to tell us of his little cousin. Apparently this little toddler had breath that could knock over a linebacker. Like you, they tried everything, to no avail. It turns out this ever curious little girl of the 50's stuck a peanut up her nostril, where it proceeded to rot. While not pleasant is was quite easily rectified. I had a similar exploratory exercise as a tot with a piece of wine cork. Maybe a quick trip to the doc isn't a bad idea...to see if there is more than expected going on in that little head of his. If there is something there, the right tools may be important for extraction...Good luck! I can smell a good family story eminating from this...!
Please have him checked by a doctor or dentist asap. In my experience, the bad breath of such a young child is due to infection of some sort: the gums, the throat, intestinal tract, something. Good luck.
I had the same problem with my daughter and we finally resolved it with a tongue scrubber. It works much better then a toothbrush. We got one made by GUM with a brush one one side and a scrapper on the other side. Have you talked with his doctor or dentist?
You might want to try giving him some digestive enzymes. Human beings are not designed to digest cow's milk and what happens inside the body is that a mucus layer builds up in the digestive tract. This interferes with digestion and blocks nutrition from being properly absorbed by the body. When food is not digested and eliminated it ferments/rots in the body causing bad breath as well as damage to the intestines and colon which leads to leaky gut syndrome. It also provides a feeding and colonizing terrain for yeasts, fungus and parasites. It is a main contributor to obesity and nutrient deficiency and also creates degenerative diseases. The best thing you can do, whether you use dairy products or not, is feed (and eat) digestive enzymes with as well as between meals. They will help digest food as well as get into the bloodstream to reduce plaque in the joints and veins. The best source of digestive enzymes is the Amazon Herb Company. Their Digestazon Plus product has herbs that aid digestion as well as a full range of digestive enzymes. No answer, but I know allergies are really bad right now and drainage down the throat can cause the bad breath.

Bad breath often comes from the stomach. He could be having a hard time digesting certain foods, have too much acid in his system, or an intolerance to milk. It could be the combination of milk and juice are a bad combination for his digestive system. I would definetly check with his pediatrician. Good luck.
You may want to check with your doc it could be a deeper problem like sinus issues
My daughter had a case of bad breath for a while as well.... I think it was after dairy products that made it flair up. We don't do cow's milk & not very much cheese.... so wondering if he has a slight allergy to dairy. You can use chlorophyll.... it is liquid you can get at Sunflower. It helps diegestion. It is dark green & I call it Mary Poppin Medicine. :) Hope this hels.
Hi V. -
Bad breath is usually from food left undigested in the stomach. It ferments there and often causes bad breath or gas. Does your son experience gas after eating? You might consider checking into food combining. It does work. Also, adding herbs to his diet, like Alfalfa or Spirulina, may clear up the problem.
If you need more information, don't hesitate to write back.

All my kids have had bad breath around this age, too. They have all been allergic to dairy, so I think it is a stomach issue for them. Acidopholis (good bacteria) seems to help with us. They also drank water with a splash of juice.
I would suggest getting a toddler mouthwash. My daughter loves it and its for kids. Try also a tounge scraper, does wonders.
Sometimes sinus issues affect breath. Any allergies? My daughter had decay...and it did not affect her breath...but, it might be worth another dentist visit, to be proactive anyway.
Some foods can be more offensive than others...like cow's milk. I notice bad breath when I drink it, which I do not now. There are many other better sources of calcium etc out there. I'd try to ditch the sugar from the juice. I use mild herbal ice teas for my daughter.
It could just be drainage. Or it could simply be the dairy, I know several people who get bad breath after drinking milk. Maybe a cavity? But it could be that he stuck something up his nose! I know of several people who've dealt with that one and said it smelled horrible. I'd take him to the doctor to make sure it's not that or some other problem, like a sinus infection. Good Luck!
