Bad Baby Breath

My son is 8 months old. He is on the liquid Alimentum formula due to allergies and eczema. We have noticed that he has smelly breath- all the time. I am not sure exactly when we first noticed it, but it could be about the same time that we started this formula 1.5 months ago. We have tried using a washcloth to clean the inside of his mouth and gums, but the smell is still there. I have never known babies to have "morning breath" all the time. But, this is our first. This is more than just a smelly belch... it is constant. Has anyone else experinced this? Is this a sign of something bad, or is it just another one of those baby things that nobody tells you about?

What can I do next?

Probably the Alimentum. That stuff is nasty. Just
check with your ped.

Hi S.,

I agree with the other moms - it's probably not anything serious, but it's always good to check with the doc.

I also know of an all-natural product that is great for everyone (including children) with allergies and eczema.

It's worth a look-see at www.gotvia.com/fptoz

Good Luck!

My daughter was on the alimentum for a while to, it was a nasty smell, but it can't hurt to mention it to your doctor. I did find that the powdered alimentum was a little less offensive than the ready to drink, I think the ready to drink is more oily, and stays around longer? Alimentum, in my understanding, is for a digestion problem, the protein molecules are easier to digest, and cause less gastrointestinal problems. If it's truly eczema from a milk allergy, have you tried soy formula instead?

Our daughter was also on Alimentum for stomach issues but the breath problem was her reflux and did not clear up until she got on reflux medicine. Our daughter did not spit up that much but she would do it when she was sleeping and it would run down on her neck and her neck and breath smelled like sour vomit. she was a lot younger when she started her medicine. If your child smells like that then I would talk to your ped about reflux.

Hi
My son was on Alimentium for several months and I know that the formula itself smells very bad. My husband would call it "liquid cheese". So my son always had that smell, not sure if it was his breath but he always had the odor. I wouldn't worry about it. Also want to let you know after my son was on Alimentium for months (due to allergies and eczema) I finally took him to a specialist at 9 months and was told he no longer needed to be on it. Just wanted to share since I know how expensive it is. He is now 11 months and on regular similac and doing great.

My baby took alimentum when I worked. I added bifidis infantis (I think it's spelled correctly...) which was in powdered form- 1/4 teaspoon to the 8 oz. bottle. It is a probiotic for babies & great for nursing moms. I think it helped him w/ digestion and keeping his positive bacteria in his intestines.

I know my babies' breath would always stink a week or two before they would cut new teeth and a few days before they would get sick... Do any of these apply?

Could your baby have reflux?

You really should mention it at your next doctors visit.

My babies were all breastfed and had wonderful breath, so I'm thinking it could be the formula. I used to watch a little girl who was just over a year old who was on whole milk who used to smell weird constantly, like sour milk, my child at the time was still breastfed and never smelled like that.

My daughter use to get chronic sinus infections before she had her tonsils and adenoids out and during this her breath smelled awful..... so bad I would have to hold my breath if she was breathing in my direction. Sometimes this was the only sign she was about to get one. Maybe this helps, good luck.

I would ask your doc. My baby sometimes gives me gross formula burps, but he doesn't ever have bad breath otherwise unless he is sick. You may be dealing with a case of thrush or some other type of infection.

If the bad breath is sour smelling it could be reflux otherwise it most likely is the Alimentum, it is gross! Worth mentioning to the Dr. just in case.

What does it smell like? My son's breath smelled really bad/strong like a nail polish remover smell. As soon as I told the doctor what it smelled like, they wanted him checked right away (as that type of smell could be a sign of reflux from being really sick, or of diabetes). He was checked at the hospital and they said it was from being sick and having constant diahrea.
It never hurts to at least call his doctors office and ask, just let them know what the smell is compared to...
Good luck!
