I think my 6week old has baby thrush and has passed it to my breasts. It is to the point where I can't even feed him because my nipple hurts so much and forget pumping. I can call the doctor tomorrow but any suggestions in the mean time?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We went to the doctor and they gave us the Naysatin. Thank you all for your help. We are both feeling much better and we are going to keep on the nursing.

I agree about the Gentian Violet. It is cheap and VERY effective (despite being messy) and it treats mommy & baby at the same time. I have been through this with all three of my babies and GV has been the quickest and most effective treatment. You can get it at most pharmacies over the counter, though you may have to ask the pharmacist for it. Also remember to boil anything the baby chews on such as bottle nipples, pacifiers and teethers.

Use the nystantin. It works. Ask your doctor for the cream as well, because the yeast will be in your baby's entire digestive tract and will develop a yeast diaper rash. I use to put the nystantin liquid on my nipples after I nursed. That is what helped get rid of it. Also, you need to allow your breast to air dry after you nurse. Leave your shirt open. Please don't stop nursing. If you do you will lose your supply and may not be able to continue.

You may want to try a yeast free diet. Many things can carry yeast and mold too. Tea for instance.

The Yeast Connection is a great book and you can get some supplements from Nature's Sunshine for Yeast. They are online. The supplements tell you what to do. I know one thing, you need to be on the yeast free diet for 14 to 21 days and if you cheat once you need to start counting as if it is day one again. Not an easy thing cause a cheat is a sentence back to doe.

You will have to cut out some foods. And also, the probiotics is a great idea. The best time to take them is before bedtime as they populate and double overnight in your system. That is a great benefit.

Keep them inthe frig or the freezer.

OH, A., I know exactly what you're talking about. I had the same problem with my second son, but it's been three years now. I kow that the pediatrician gave me something in liquid form (think it was prescribed) and told me to use the Q-tip and put the on the inside of the cheeks and I can't remember if it's after feeding him bcause of the taste and I would want him to nurse and I had something to put on my hnhipples, but I think I was to puit it onafter nursing him and then wipe it off just before nursing him. I can't remember too much like names or details or I remember is the content of the issue, an it would be sooooooo painful that I would cr5y and I made myself suffer through it. And there wre times I would just give him formula because I could bear it only 5 minutes and he nursed 20 minutes on each breast. If you can, try to nurse him, but get the stuff for his mouth and get something for you but make sure you ask alot of questions like should you wipe your the stuff off your nipples real good before nursing or is it okay to put on before he nurses. Get all the questons out there and make sure that they are honest about he affects on you and your baby and the nursing. So, you need to call the pediatrician and get the appt ASAP and also, call your OB and see what they say and see if there's any similarities in answers between the OB and the pediatrician. Also, talk to lactation consultion and check into the group for nursing mothers and never had the chance and forget the name....Lecheon League...I am sure I am way off base with the name here. You'd want to nurse because you're be sore, engorged and get the milk into him. If you can't, I totally understand!!!!! I understand BIG TIME. Please let me know how it went and what the names are again, it's been 3 years since then so I forgotton names and so forth. I'll pray for you both and CONGRATULATIONS on your baby!!!! I get excited when I hear about women who are pregnant and who have had their babies!!

there's a crazy purple dye that you can get without a prescription, called gentian violet. Colors everything purple, but works fast. It's a crazy experience though; your nipples are completely purple and baby's mouth and cheeks turn a lovely deep violet. Put the camera away for a few days.

Good for you with nursing. Best to you!

baby was probably born with it and passed it onto you. go to a pharmacy and buy stuff for your breasts that help to ease the cracking. i think it was lanolin/ok for nursing. i think that the problem may be that if the baby still has thrush, then it can keep getting passed back and forth since it's on your nipples.
you can buy something at whole foods for the thrush (which is a yeast infection in the mouth), and put it in a formula or breast milf from pumping. it's a powdered probiotic that can help with the baby's tummy and intestinal tract which is what may be causing the thrush to begin with.
god luck.

Hi A.,
I also had yeast infection in my breast so I feel your pain. I think the vinegar/water or baking soda/water wash works well. For the baking soda it is 1 teaspoon for 1 cup boiled water. Let it cool before using. Also take grapefruit seed extract. (Not to be confused with grape seed extract) You can get it at Whole Foods. That seems to help me a lot. A lactation consultant told me to also cut sugars and dairy from my diet, but that was hard for me. And take a probiotic. Your doctor can also prescribe diflucan which works well as long as you get the right dose. Here's a website for breastfeeding info, www.kellymom.com.
Hope this helps, Try to feed through the pain, it gets better. Plus you don't want to get engorged.

Also, gentian violet would be beneficial to you both. Yes, it will turn your nipple and the baby's mouth purple but it will go away fast, along with the thrush!

Hi A.,
I'm sorry you are dealing with this, thrush can be so painful. If you and your baby are not both treated, you will continue to pass it back and forth to each other. In addition to using your doctor's prescription, treating yourself with gentian violet is usually effective
Good luck !
