My new son is now 8 weeks old and we haven't yet seen a real smile. He had his 2 month old MD appt. today. The MD is not worried - she said some babies are more serious than others. Has anyone else experienced this? Thank you

A smile at 8 weeks old would be fairly early.
It's more typical by 4 months and many don't smile till 6 or so months.
Be patient - it will come!

I'm 36 and still not into smiling.

I'm just kidding, but, yes, I'll agree with the MD. All babies are different, and B is right. It's usually around four months or so. I know it was with my son.

All babies are individuals. Listen to your son's doctor. If there was cause to worry, he would let you know. At 8 weeks, there isn't cause. And yes, some babies are a lot more serious than others. It is part of their personalities. Isn't it fun to see their little personalities emerge?

My daughter would not Laugh for me for MONTHS. She was past the "typical" age for laughing (not by much though) before my husband could get her to laugh. But it was a lot of work to get her to laugh, and I could NOT get her to laugh at all. Only my husband, for the longest time.
Kids are all so different.
Don't worry. 8 weeks is really young. And this is just the first of many milestones that your baby will meet... so take a few deep breaths, and know (and remind yourself) that the milestones are really just guidelines... not set in stone. Some babies hit them sooner, some later, and some right "on time".
Enjoy that new baby. ;)

According to this chart SOME babies can smile at 2 months (this is "early" behavior at that age), and it isn't "most babies" can do this until about 4 months.

My son was about 10 weeks old when we saw his first "real smile"... he LOVED car rides as a newborn. It was July 4th and he had been a fuss pot all day long. We were having friends over for a BBQ that night, so I suggested to my husband that we take him for a quick car ride and see if he would nap before our company arrived. That little bugger had an ear-to-ear grin the MINUTE he realized he was going in the car.

As long as he's interested in faces, interacting with you and seeking out your attention, there's really nothing to worry about. I look at pictures of my husband as an infant... not smiling in a single picture until he was about 6 months old. To this day, he's a very serious person.

Some babies start smiling as early as day 1. Others are more selective and wait a few months before they show off their most precious talent. It may have something to do with how he is interacted with, too. My son was 7 1/2 months before he smiled- and that was at someone else, not even me, the mommy! He was colicky and I was always sooo tired and frustrated that that probably contributed to him not smiling- I wasn't smiling at him enough. Babies mimic our facial expressions, so I'd suggest smiling at him as much as possible for him to get the hint. Good luck!

My daughter now 2 years old didnt give a 'real' smile until she was about 6 weeks old and my 1 month old daughter started to actually smile last week at only 3 weeks. I was shocked when I realized that she was truly smiling and that it wasnt gas because I was expecting it to be around 6+ weeks like her sister was. I agree with your ped. that he may just be a more serious person - it will come and it WILL melt your heart when it does

My son smiled at 2 months. I know that because I took him for 2 month pictures and that was the first "real" smile. "Real" smiles rarely happen before 1 month anyway. Just keep smiling at him and I am sure he will be just fine!
