My baby's( 7 months) voice just became very hoarse, and her cry is different than before. No runny nose,cold, or fever. Any suggestions? I did go to work today, and she was left with my mother-in-law for awhile. Could it be from excessive crying?

Does it get worse at night? And is it like a barking, harsh cough. Not a phlemly, wet kind of cough? I wonder if it could be croup. With croup crying is not advised. The season lasts until March and this year there was more cases. I've read the other responses and so it sounds like it can be lots of things. But I agree to take her in.
My little girl was hoarse in her crying and my lactation consultant told me that was a sign of slight dehydration. Is She drinking enough fluids? Good luck.
My 10 month old started getting a little hoarse and it followed with a lot of coughing. He doesn't have a runny nose but is clearly congested in his chest now. At this young age they still don't know how to cough up phlegm to clear their airways completely, so they will be hoarse sounding and only cough when it irritates their airway. Another possibility is if there was something that caused an allergic reaction, like a cat or dog or other cleaning supplies that she may have been exposed to. Just ask your mother in law if she was crying a lot or if she may have been using any product that could have potentially gotten to your daughter through the air (fumes). Do they smoke? Good luck!

My daughter almost lost her voice at 6 weeks! I wondered the same thing - re: crying. She was born in Sept. right before the Santa Ana's started to blow. Called the doc. Said it probably wasn't crying related but could be the hot dry air or allergies. Told me to turn on humidifier in her room and make sure she got lots of liquids. I was nursing so I just obliged a little more often. Went away on it's own in about a 4-5 days. She's 2.5 now and still gets a little hoarse when the winds pick up...Hope it helps!

Baby voices can change for a variety of reasons...crying can be one but so can change in climate, allergies due to seasonal or nutritional changes...Have you changed her food lately? Added something new to the diet, even if it was only once, it can matter.
Now, if you're concerned that her sitter, family or not, may not be caring for her the way you would, simply drop by for surprised visits...bring cookies or a treat for everyone...but you'll know she's OK every day that way.
If it persists, I would call the Dr. You'll know whether it's something to be concerned about and you'll sleep better too.

Dear K., I would just see how she does tomorrow and see if it gets better. If it was just from crying, it would probably come back as quickly as ours as adults if we were yelling a lot right? Otherwise, keep looking for other signs of what could be causing it. AM
I hope its not from excessive crying! If that is the case it will be a difficult conversation you have to have with your mother in law.
I can't hear her or see her but from what you are describing..
Take her RIGHT AWAY to the ER. She may have epiglotitis which can be VERY dangerous. I don't want to scare you but changes in an infants voice are not common and usually a sign of airway obstruction.
Usually there is a fever ( may have been few days ago) associated with it. It may also be Croup.
Either way she needs to go to the Doc., immediately.
