I don't currently have any but am seriously considering getting some. Texas has a cap on how much someone can sue a hospital for and often they go after the nurse too. I just attended a seminar that was given by a RN who also is a legal nurse consultant and she specializes in IV infiltrates/extravasations etc... What she had to say really hit home b/c these nurses were sued, successfully, for hundreds of thousands of dollars b/c they were taking care of a patient whose line infiltrated. It could certainly happen to any of us. They just weren't on top of it. Certainly not an excuse for the horrible burns or nerve damage that resulted. I'm sure this is an extreme case but stil a risk. I see ads in the nursing magazine or you could probably find something on a nursing website. let me know what you find out!

I don't carry mal-practice insurance. One with a lawyer about a client in the nursing home that fell on the previous shift and the nurse that did not call. But I never even gave a deposition. The second was with state auditors investigating a complaint against the hospital I was working at. Again, no deposition. I have been an RN for 15 years and have never had any, nor do I know any nurse that does. Probably taking a risk, but they can't take what I don't have. And I try to follow policy and procedure to the letter, to avoid the need. And chart meticulously. I know it still won't keep me out of a lawsuit, but again you can't get blood from a turnip. I have also heard that if you do have it, they will try to get more because you do have insurance. Curious, as to why you would think that you need it?
Good Luck,
L.

I'm a RT and needed insurance when I was working as an independant contractor. Its been a few years ago so I don't remember the name of the company, but it cost around $75 a year. Good luck.

I always did, I don't need any type of claim coming back to effect me or my family. I had great insurance with Bill Beatty. It cost me $100 for a year, I was a medical-oncology nurse, so rates differ if you are in a more high risk or NP setting, and is still in effect should I have any claims from the time I was working and had insurance. Basically, since I am not currently working I don't carry insurance (duh) but I am still covered since the statute of limitations is several years (depending on the case). I never, thankfully, had any cases i could ever see come to trial, but it was peace of mind and $100 is well worth that. You can also be reimbused for your insurance by your company, but I never chose to do that, no one knew I had insurance, I just carried it on my own. Hope this helps.
