Anyway to Treat/prevent Bruising?

My 2 little fellows, 5 and 2 get undressed at the end of the day and look like football/rugby/soccer players! All banged up! I've put Epsom salt in the bath water and Arnica gel on the bumps and bruises, but any other recommendatins? Dietary suggestions? They also have tough little attitudes to go with it - how do you persuade them to let you apply ointment?

What can I do next?

Try Arnica. You can get it at Lassen's and Whole Foods. It's in a small blue vial by Bioiron. Tastes like tiny candies and they put under tongue for minute or two while it melts. Good for bruising.

If you feel that their bruising is not typical ask your doctor. Personally I'd just leave them alone, it's not worth the daily treatment fight you'll have with your kids.

Try foods with potassium like bananas. Talk to your pediatrician first though since too much potassium isn't good either.

I can completely relate to the horror at bedtime every night when I put my 2 and 1/2 yr old in his pj's and see how he has beaten him self up for the day! I had the pediatrician check it out, even drew blood to make sure blood counts were ok (no leukemia), no alergies etc.. and after all the torture he told me EXACTLY what my mom had said...."he's a boy....boys will be boys!" Just told me to keep an eye on him and keep his skin well moisturized to decrease the scratches and Good Luck!
PS, I just gave birth to twins 3 weeks ago and now don't have the time to obsess so that helps too! LOL

Are they on any medications? Medicatons can sometimes cause bruising or thin the blood so that it won't clot after an injury. My little girl was on a steroid and she was bruised all over her body. You can try a cold pack on the area when they bump themselves or (eek) a cold bath after a good wrestle. If it is too bad, let the PED know and they may need blood work drawn up to make sure everything is okay.

I have Lavender oil from Young Living that assists in bruises. It's therapeutic-grade pure lavender oil. Works great!! I highly recommend it.

Hi M.,
My son is 6 now and he's always bruised from running, jumping, body slamming me (I'm always bruised too).... all the things boys like to do. We've even been to the pediatrician when he had bruises all over his legs. Luckily she knows us well and knows that he got them on his own. We always just leave them and they go away in a few days. There is no need to put anything on them unless they are bleeding. Then we use some neosporin and a band aid.

I wouldn't worry about them unless you think there is some other health issue.

Hope this helps!

My daughter bruises easily, she is now in her 30's and when she was little I would see the same thing you see with your boys. I consulted her doctor, he suggested I give her multivitamins, I did this at intervals of 3 mos on and 3 months off. I found that when I did the multivitamins constantly for the first year she didn't need to have them as often. This controlled the bruising for me. The minor bruising I didn't worry too much about as this was normal for most children especially when they fell hard. Consult your pediatrician and ask if your boys can use the multivitamins for their bruising and immune system.

Sometimes the lack of certain vitamins is the cause of the ease of bruising. A good example is this: my body produces too much vitamin A, so I have to stay away from all the veggies, and dairy products that help the body with vitamin A. Then when my body does not produce this vitamin naturally I have to drink milk and eat logs of carrots, and yellow veggies.

As I said, check with your doctor about the boys taking multivitamins and if you want to try it, it does not hurt them. However each individual has individual reactions to different OTC and homeopathic medications/vitamins.

A vitamin K deficiency causes bruising to occur more easily. Dark leafy greens contain vit. K and there are supplements available, but don't over-do it with too many supplements because too much can cause problems as well.

Unless this is a true medically unhealthy type of bruising/ more than normal for a little boy, I say just leave it alone. They are boys! Even my super sensitive boy who prefers to sit and read books all day, when he gets with his best four year old buddy turns into a typical rough and tumble boy. Tramping through the bushes and playing robots and monsters, riding bikes through the mud and "shooting" the bad guys - this is what boys do! Enjoy their play time and you'll have some good stories to tell them when they grow up about how beat up they used to get having fun toghether :)

Hi M.,

Give them Arnica INTERNALLY (pellet dissolved in water or juice) rather than just topically in an ointment. It works more profoundly that way, and they won't have anything to object to. Start with 30C if you're going to be giving it frequently...a 200C if it's only occasional.

I'm adding my vote to giving arnica internally. I just gave my 7 month old some arnica a couple days ago after he slammed his head hard. His forehead had a quarter sized bruise and and egg sized lump immediately, but after using arnica the next day he only had a yellowed bruise the size of a dime between his eyes. Miracle product.
