Anyone Recently Replace an 2-Ton AC Unit?

ETA: ours are 3 ton units, and it took almost 10 hours to complete the job.
We just had 2 units replaced--our upstairs and downstairs. We had both the outside units and attic units replaced. They are top of the line, 16 SEER, and our total cost for installation & parts was around $15,000, and that is with a discount bc my hubs uncle got us the parts at cost. Yes, my husband pointed out that is as much as a car ;) There are so many variables as to how much this could cost: what parts are needed to be purchased, the SEER rating, outside only units, inside only, both? Etc...I suggest doing a TON of research on this before buying ANYTHING. Don't just call around & ask prices. Look at all of your options first, and get what suits your needs for your house and your climate. It may not be as fun as buying a new car, but it's still very worth it! :)

$4000 sounds about right, actually that's pretty cheap. We just replaced a 5 ton unit through Costco getting a really good deal and we spent $12000. Ours was for both the air conditioning unit and the heater and it took them two days to remove the old and install the new. Just replacing the air conditioning unit should only take them a day and I don't know about where you live but here in Cali you have to pay for a permit when you install new A/C so that's part of the price they quote (usually).

Many things are factored into this cost. Please, do not go with the cheapest person you find or cheapest units you find.

YES, replacing AC is very expensive. Find a good, reliable company.

We spent over $20,000 for 2 units plus furnaces a few years ago.

We opted to do 1 unit at a time and pay cash for each to get a substantial discount. When someone pays cash, the company does not have to deal with outside loan companies or the fees they pay for using the credit card machines. Just a thought!!

Bottom line.. yes they are very expensive and beware of the fly by nighter's who have not been around and in business a long time. Call the BBB and make sure you are getting someone who will give you a quality job.

Nope... that's why we replaced our central unit with window units.

Our compressor went out 3 1/2 years ago, I think.... 2008, maybe? Anyway, we didn't have the money then, so we just bought a bunch of window units from garage sales and craigslist... spent about $300 for 7 units....

I think in many ways we've been better off..... our old unit was running CONSTANTLY (like 12 hours a day, and having a hard time keeping the house at 80 degrees (central Texas), and our bills were $400-500 in a couple of the hottest months. Since we switched to window units, we've spent far less... we cool only the rooms we need... for example, at night, only 2 or 3 bedrooms are being cooled (depends on who is living at home at the time). During the day, usually 2-3 are running, also.....

It is noisier, and we also use a couple of pedestal fans to blow the cool air into other parts of the house.

I think we had a 4 T unit... I hate to think what the cost would be!

I think it cost us about $5,000 to replace ours last year. The installation took half the day. $4,000 seems pretty reasonable. We got 3 quotes from established companies, and $5,000 was the cheapest. We've been thrilled with it for the past year, though. No issues, and it keeps the house much cooler than the previous model.
