Anyone Develop Allergies After Pregnancy?

My son was born 8 months ago--and since then I've been allergic to my wedding rings! I was really swollen while pg and couldn't wear them from about 7 mos pg and on, so when I finally lost the water weight I started wearing the rings again, only to find that I develop little red itchy bumps that turn into scaly skin.

My doctor suggested that it's a new allergy brought on by hormones, and as long as I'm nursing, I'll still have the hormones. Strange.

Anyone else experience a new allergy after having a baby?

And, by the way, does anyone know if platinum is less allergenic than white gold?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks, everyone. It's good to know that I'm not alone with this allergy thing!

I had the same thing happen, but it didn't start until I weaned my son. I have been told that platinum is less allergenic. I actually bought a sterling silver ring (from Tiffany's - they are supposed to have less problems with them) that I alternate every other day with my wedding rings. I did not wear my wedding rings for a few months and then started alternating with the silver. Good luck!

I swear I'm more allergic to certain things, and sensitive to more foods etc. than I was before motherhood. I have no idea if pregnancy brought this on or if age did. I'm 26 and had my daughter 5 years ago. The slight problems/allergies aren't going away LOL

I became allergic to our dog after pregnancy. It didn't go away when I stopped nursing and was so bad for about a year that I was on tons of allergy meds. My daughter is three and half now and it is better then it has been, but I am expecting again in August so who knows what will happen this time:) I had the ring thing happen with the scaly skin, I thought it was due to water sitting under my ring because I was washing my hands so much. I would take it off evertime I washed my hands and the scaly skin stopped happening eventually I stopped having to that but it was a year or so. Good Luck!

I also developed weird skin reactions after my second baby was born in Nov. 2006! Starting around the second week after I delivered, I started breaking out in hives all over my body. Jewellery also causes a reaction. Also, my skin now turns bright red when exposed to chlorine in the pool.

My dermatologist put me on Zertex once a night, which has controlled the symptoms. She said it is probably caused by a virus, which tricks the body into thinking it needs to release hystamine, which causes the symptoms, and typically lasts 4-6 months. Another dermatologist said it is probably caused by hormones. Whatever the cause, it is driving me crazy!

Did you have an epidural? I had one, and that caused itchiness and red bumps on my back. I wonder if that is related. I never have had anything like this before.

Hi S.,
My son is now 22 months old and my ring allergy is still there. I went to a dermatologist and he told me that it is excezma. I have a prescription lotion which helps clear it up quickly, but I pretty much can not wear my rings at home while washing my hands, doing laundry, etc. I am still hopeful that it will go away someday.

I developed excezma on my foot (of all places). Man does that itch. I tell you with all the changes babies do to us. My shoe size is different, my hair started turning gray, the excezma and of course the size change in my clothes. Good thing they are so sweet and loving.

Yes this does happen. I have hives that appear out of nowhere that I blame the hormones on. I hope that they settle down and that the hives go away. Sarna seems to help the itching (It is warm and cold like icy hot and covers the itching so I can get to sleep.) I hope you will be able to wear your rings again when your body get back to normal.

I had a similar reaction to my wedding ring. I took it off when I was about 7 mth preg and then put it back on when the weight came off. I had it resized so it is looseand I still get a red/raw/ichy ring around my finger.. Gets worse it i have to wash my hands alot. I started taking it off every few days and leaving it off for a day or so and it has seemed to help. I make sure my ring is clean often and its getting better.
