Allergic to Wedding Ring!

So apparently I have developed an allergy to my wedding ring- My skin under my ring with break out and itch to the point of bleeding. A few months ago when I realized it wasn't just soap or something in my ring ago I took it to the jewelers and explained the issues- He suggested sizing the ring a little to give it more breathing room and dipping them in paladium (i think) --well after that ridiculous bill, the allergy did subside for about 3-4 months and now it is back! So tired of this, any suggestions that won't cost an arm and a leg?? I did read that coating the inside of the band with a clear nail poilsh would help- but no such luck with that one- BTW I have 4 bands total- 3 are white gold and center is platinum. on the white gold bands were dipped- Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Wow! Thank you all so much for all the great ideas-
- I had been told by quite a few people that it could be this issue of soap or h20 getting under my ring. But what is strange about that is that I was a hairstylist for 7 yrs before being a SAHM and had my hand in chemicals, soap, and h20 A LOT, and this was never a problem for me. The jeweler said he thought it was an allergy to the metal, so that is why I agreed to dipping them.
- I got a quote on getting all the diamonds re-set onto 1 band made of platinum (jeweler says this is the only metal that doesn't create an allergy) and it was outrageous!!! Thousands of dollars- so I realized as a SAHM maybe buying grocerys or paying the mortgage should come first- haha- any ideas to other metals that wouldn't cause an allergy?
- When I got the bands 5-6 yrs ago, I didn't have this allergy to them, this has all happened in the last year, so I'm guessing it is something I developed- maybe a product of the last pregnancy-maybe it will go away?
-Thank you all for your great ideas, I think I will try the aquaphor, and taking the ring off more (i wear it 24/7 until my finger gets too bad) If anyone knows of a less expensive fix (different metal or a jeweler willing to do lifetime dips) please let me know! again, thank you all!!

I found that Soft Soap is my culprit. If I wash my hands in it and don't rinse extremely well I have blisters like crazy. I think talking to a different jeweler may be a good idea. Or taking the rings back to the original ones to have him warranty his work.

Well, I think you have your answer. You wear 4 bands total.
That takes up a lot of space on your finger and your fingers aren't getting thouroughly dry after you wash them, do dishes, whatever.
I have a beautiful ring and the band is wide. I have to take it off and let my finger get air to it. I take it off to wash dishes. I take it off to shower. That way, I can make sure my skin gets good and dry and has a rest from being covered with the metal. I have a beautiful and expensive ring that can eat the skin right off of my finger if I don't air my finger out. Moisture gets trapped. And, I have totally noticed that this never happens with my narrow banded rings. You don't even have to take them off. You can just slide them up close to the knuckle to get things good and dried and aired out before sliding it back down.
With 4 bands, I'll bet you anything that's what's happening.

Best wishes.

Do you wear your rings all day every day? I take mine off when I'm at home, as I was getting itchy under the ring. So now it's part of my daily routine - put them on in the am before I leave the house, take them off when I get home.

I don't think you have an allergy to the metal (after 5 years that is not likely) and I would not recommend changing anything about your ring. I had this exact issue after I got some soap stuck in between my rings. I developed eczema (according to my dermatologist - who also said it is not an allergy) on the skin under the rings as a result. (Sweat and water trapped under your rings can also cause it.) I was given samples and a prescription for a steroid cream to be applied to the area. It's been an ongoing problem, now one year since the soap incident, but it's gotten a lot better in the last few weeks since I started always taking my rings off whenever I touch soap. Go to see a dermatologist and get their opinion before you do anything to your rings!!

I am allergic to every metal out there but platinum, titanium, and sterling silver (as long as it has no nickel). Ugh! Sorry! You may want to consider selling your rings given the price of gold currently (obviously in agreement with your DH) and buying a new set in titanium - exceedingly light, durable, and inexpensive. DH and I bought matching sets for $20 apiece on overstock.com. Another option could be to simply wear them on a chain around your neck. As another reviewer said, nickel allergies are pretty common.

Have you tried going without to allow it to heal, then adding the platinum only back to see if you're allergic to the plat as well?

If you've begun reacting to your rings, you will react to other pieces of jewelry such as earrings and chains as well. Watch out for reaction to antiperspirants and baking powders which contain aluminum too! This could be a developing allergy for you. Keep an eye on it!

I had this problem with my watch band and it was fabric and plastic not metal. For years I had an itchy rash on my left wrist, so I switched to wearing my watch on the right. The rash stayed and would often pop up when the skin had been soaking in water (swimming, bath, doing dishes, etc.) My doctor prescribed Diflucan for a vaginal yeast infection and all of a sudden the rash cleared up and has not been back. You might ask your doctor or dermatologist about it because it may be a yeast or some other fungal infection in the skin.

I had a wide band on a ring and it didnt dry well enough with all the handwashing I did while doing daycare. It might be your problem too. Its staying wet, and getting icky under the ring and irritating the skin. Try taking off a couple of the bands if possible. Wear them on different fingers or different hands.

White gold is just regular gold dipped in rhodium. You probably are allergic to the regular gold but not the rhodium, which is why you stopped reacting once you had them dipped. Problem is - rhodium wears off and you have to keep getting them re-dipped. Lots of people don't know this when they purchase their rings. You need to make sure your jeweler will offer free lifetime dips of rhodium with your purchase, otherwise, they charge an arm and a leg to have it done.

First, I would find out which rings are causing the problems. Just wear your platinum ring for awhile and see if it causes problems - if no, then it's the other rings. If it's them I guess it's an allergy to something with the gold.

Then I would go to a jeweler that offers warranty's and have them set your stones in new bands. Then your bands will have a good warranty so that you can get them dipped every 6 months in rhodium for free.

My jeweler dips for free, sizes for free, cleans for free and I paid the same for our rings as any other mall store. Some mall stores offer this lifetime warrenty for an initial fee.
