Any Medicine or Home Remedies Out There for Infant with Cold?

Hi,
I am so frustrated. My ten month old son has a viral infection that gave him high fevers for about four days. We were able to manage that with Tylenol and Motrin. However, now he has this horrible congestion and runny/stuffy nose. He has a hard time eating because he can't breath. Nothing makes him comfortable so he just screams all of the time, until he is just so exausted that he just passes out. We have been to the doctors and because it's viral there isn't any antibiotics they can give him, thats fine we understand that. I am just upset that I can't even give him anything over the counter to help him because they pulled everything off of the shelves because of stupid people who can't follow directions. So now my son, and many other children have to suffer, along with their parents, because of these stupid people. Sorry had to rant. We have been using the cool mist humidiphier (with the Vicks that mists in the air), per doctors orders. We use the "boogie sucker" to get as much out as we can, along with the saline drops. We have also elevated his matress. That's about all we can do. Does anyone else have any other suggestions to help make him more comfortable, or even know of something that I can give him to help him relax and be able to eat and sleep a little more soundly? Any suggestions at all are greatly appreciated. Please note, I do not want to drug my kid, I just want him to feel better so please know that I would never give either of my children anything that would harm them. Thank you in advance.

P.S. Back in February we had a major problem with our son. He had gotten what we thought was an ordinary cold, it turned into RSV. We ended up in CHOP for a few days. Now we have to watch his breathing becuase he is now prone to asthma. I just don't want anything like that to happen again.

What can I do next?

I am glad that my youngest can get OTC.....
but we used VapoBath and Vicks for him and we also elevated his crib at night and that helped some.Nose drops and "the boggie sucker"works good too.......
It does suck when you have sick kids and there's nothing you can do for them because of stupid people. And another thing i hate to hear.."It has to run it course!"My youngest suffers from high fevers too when he gets sick(he ended up with seizures at 15months and now he runs the risk of having them again until age 5).....
Good luck and try the Vicks.

We have the same problem. She hates it when she gets a stuffy nose. I use a lot of saline drops and then suck everything out like you do. That helps for a bit but not too long. What helps me at night is I put her in a stroller, that way her head is elivated and she is able to breath better then when she is lying down. Also, a lot of fresh air helps. It seems that once we go outside she can breath much better. Good luck with everything and I hope he will feel better soon. P.S I also heard about the Vicks feet and socks.

i am going thru the same thing with my 7 month old. along with what everyone else said, try using a vicks tablet in the shower while you get your shower but put your child in his seat in the bathroom so he can breathe the fumes. make sure to keep the door open a bit. my cousin is a nurse and that, along with everyone else's advice, was the best i've gotten so far. unfortunately there are no meds in the store we can give our kids...hope that helps!

C.,

Use saline drops with the boogie sucker, and keep his head elavated so it doesn't drain into his ears causing a ear infection. My daughter just got over a sinus infection that caused her to get pink eye. she is 4 but it was not great.

Christine,
It IS frustrating and we all hate to see our kids siick like that! Definitely use the saline drops--they will help. And keep that humidifier humming! Prop the head of the crib mattress with blocks/phonebooks under the legs. Also--maybe try the Baby Vicks Vapor Rub. It will help loosen the congestion. Good luck & keep boogie-sucking! I have hread an old remedy for coughing (not sure if he is or just stuffy) is to put a thin layer of Vicks on hi feet & put socks over that at night.

I would recommend a chiropractor, expecially if your child is prone to asthma. I took my son to a great one when he was having problems with his breathing (he had an RSV-like illness as a baby and had breathing problems as a result for several years. He has since outgrown them) and the chiropractor was wonderful. One adjustment and his breathing would get back on track. If you are breastfeeding, let him nurse as often as he wants or can be encouraged to. Also, don't medicate the fever immediately. The fever is what kills the virus, if you lower the fever immediately, it can't do anything. I let my kids fevers go to 103 or 104 before I medicate them and we have never had any problems.
Also, all of the meds were pulled off of the shelf because they posed a risk to children. There were dangerous side effects, not because of stupid people. Their effectiveness did not outweigh the risks that they posed.

When my son was 3 months old he had a bad cold with lung congestion and my pediatrician put him on an albuterol nebulizer for a couple weeks and as needed for respiratory distress. Maybe that would help loosen things up and make your son feel and sleep better. The lack of sleep was killing us and really set us back!
