Am I Allowed to Do This While Pregnant?

These may sound silly...but I just want to make sure it's something I can do while pregnant.

#1) I ride my bike a lot and I typically put my 4yr old daughter in the trailer and ride. I'm 31 weeks and all of a sudden people are telling me I shouldn't be trailing her. I don't over do it (usually 30-45 min ride and I stay well hydrated).

#2) Can I use tanning lotion? Like the Jergens gradual tan stuff? It's starting to get warmer and I'm a ghost.

Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

well, the doctor said I could use the gradual tanning lotion. He did say he wanted me to quit riding my bike though. He said I was safe to trailer my daughter...so it wasn't the overdoing it part or the weight issue...it was the fear of me falling. I guess I'll just stick to the gym .:)
Thanks everyone!

Bike - my doc said if I was comfortable doing it, and had been doing it, I could continue. If there was a chance I might fall - then not to do it. Falls could be harmful to baby.

As for as Jergens goes I wouldn't recommend that brand go to Cosmetics Database and find a brand that is Chemical free.

I wouldn't worry about appearing tanned right now. This time of year lots of people have not had much time in the sun. I don't know enough about the chemicals in the tanning lotions to determine pregnancy safety issues. (I just read an article about how some people in India are spending a lot of money to lighten their skin. And I know some light skinned people here like to darken their skin. Why can't everyone just be happy with the skin they've got? But I digress.) With the bike riding, late pregnancy can bring a lot of balance issues, and it's different for everyone. If it feels good, and your doctor has no problems with it, then continue as long as you like.

I bowled throughout my pregnancy. My doctor said if it is an activity that you did a lot before pregnancy you can continue it during pregnancy, balance will be the bigger issue so if you feel rocky then stop but I never felt shaky. Starting up something new like running 3 miles when you have not run in years, that is discouraged because it is a new stress on the body.

With the tanning lotion my doctor told me not to use it because there are going to be chemicals absorbed and not sure if it is safe for the baby. You are a beautiful women just as you are, no need to be tan. I have stopped using tanning products and sunning because it is not healthy in general.

I would talk all over with your OB/GYN or midwife... they get questions like this all the time.

Of course. If you ever have questions you can call the nurse line at your clinic. But exercise is encouraged during pregnancy, especially exercise that you are already doing! Keep it up mama!

Great questions!

1. If you have always been doing it then continue to do so as long as it is comfortable. Be very careful, it's a fall that is most worrisome.

2. NO NO NO NO NO NOT EVER! The chemicals from those products get absorbed by the largest organ (your skin) runs directly into the bloodstream and then it's up to your organs to filter out the gunk and not pass it on to baby. There is already enough toxicity in your environment, (http://www.liveitdontdiet.isagenix.com/us/en/areyoutoxic....) please be aware of what you are in control of. Don't open your body to even more toxicity. The water, the air, the food, detergents, soap etc, all full of chemicals that your body has to process...don't give it any more willingly.

If you have been frequently pulling your daughter in the trailer then you will be fine. It's only new exercises that are discouraged. I have friends that run marathons up to their 7th and 8th months. It's great that you are staying fit!
As far as tanning lotion, I personally wouldn't because of the chemicals. But a call to your doctor can clear that up and if they say yes, then you can do what you are comfortable with!
Congrats on your growing family!

I don't know about the tanning stuff but I do know that being at 31 weeks pregnant you shouldn't be pulling your daughter on a little trailer behind you. The doctors told me if I wanted to exercise then I should do light things like squats, small stretches and a stationary bike. I am sure you can ride your bike but you may want to cut the time down. I am 37 weeks pregnant, wish I could get on a bike but all the weight I have gained has interfered with my right knee and its painful to even walk to the bathroom. But I am sure other mom's will be giving you great advice too. Good luck :)

LOL @ GHOST! Me too, I swear I glow in the dark. I personally used stuff like that, but I would check with your doc to be sure on the tanning lotion. I'm pretty confident it's fine. As far as the bike, go for it! When I was pregnant with my first, I rode everywhere until it was too uncomfortable to. I even went horseback riding @ 14 weeks... though in hindsight, I wouldn't recommend it, especially if you're not familiar with the horse. Just make sure you stay hydrated and if anyone says anything, you can either smile and thank them for their concern (while pedalling by) or tell them to mind their own business! Happy riding!

Yes about the bike. I'm on my third pregnancy. With my second, my son was 22 months old. I think it kept me in great shape, seeing as my husband and I walked home from the hospital after having our second baby! Probably they are just too nervous in case you fall off the bike. Balance can be tricky later in pregnancy, and I think they are thinking more of their own reactions. "For my sake, please don't ride the bike when you are pregnant. It makes me nervous." If you and your daughter (and significant other) are okay with it, go for it!

I'd be afraid of a fall with the bike.
If all else fails ask your doctor.

I would check the ingredients on the jergens. Everything we put on the skin is metabolized as if it was eaten. Coconut oil is the best. I'd lather up in that and lay in the sun for a few hours....

I, too, enjoy biking, but I was told by my doctors and in a number of books to avoid biking after the first trimester because of the possibility of falls (I also love the bike trailer!)

I don't remember the exact reason why, but I was pregnant during the summer and something I read about made me stay away from tanning lotions and self-tanners. I'm not a total freak about doing things when pregnant either, but I read something that made me stay away from them.

I think biking is alright but be careful, you don't want to fall off, I know my ex boyfriends sister biked her whole pregnancy, the rule of thumb is if you have already been consistantly doing it leading up to your pregnancy you can remain, starting something new in terms of exercise is not advised. I was a Corporate Trainer for one of the major cosmetic companies for ten years, one of thier best products was the tanner, I tanned thru my whole pregnancy, yes you are fine, it doesn't seep into the bloodstream, all cosmetics are merely topical. Hope that helps, but show your doc anyway.

I'd be more concerned about falls because your center of gravity is so off, but as far as it being exercise you should be fine. I think the general rule is not to pick up any NEW exercises, but if you keep doing what you're doing you'll be fine. My mom water-skiied until my sister and I were born, if you can believe that. She must have looked a sight.

You're fine using the gradual tan stuff, too.

Yes, if you have been doing the exercise you can keep doing it!

The self tanner is a chemical which will seep through your skin. It won't hurt the baby, but I am not sure how "natural" you want to be.

I remember reading that the concern about biking in pregnancy is not the exercise, but more the risk of falling. Your balance has to be affected this late into the pregnancy, at least I know mine was!
