Air Purifiers for Allergies?

We have the Oreck XL and it works very well. We sleep much better now that the allergens were cut down. It cost around 250 at Costco when they have it.

For about 1,000 you can get the same technology on a whole house level which is what we are in the process of doing. I used to have one for the house but my idiot of an ex threw out the collection units during our divorce. To replace them cost almost as much as the system so we are trying to find out exact costs and the improvements in technology.

The nice thing about these types of filters is there is no replacement filters you just clean it, dry it and then fire it up again. The initial cost is greater than those that use media type filters but in the long run are much cheaper and easier to maintain.

I did a research and bought "Alen" for my son but I'd check out Consumer Reports (consumerreports.org) for the latest ratings, since I bought mine several years ago. You may have to pay a subscription fee (depending on a product), but it's worth it. According to Consumer Reports, some expensive air purifiers like Shaper Image brand doesn't do much (maybe they've improved over years).

we put in a whole house one on our hvac at two houses. they use 4 or 6 inch filters that are changed out twice a year. it runs ###-###-####. We have honeywill and we had another one before that. it must be installed by a HVAC professional.

before that we went to sears and got the white ones that look round with a flat bottom and the tall ones they sell on tv that you wipe down with a sponge. we had to change filters monthly at least and it was not working except in the room.plus, filters were outrageously expensive. even when on sale, the shipping of a large box was expensive.
the ionization one stinks though my neighbor can't smell it and appreciates we gave it to her.

I wonder if since a doctor prescribed it, if your health insurance would cover it?

Be sure to purchase extra filters. I used to keep 3 extras. It always seemed to be a busy time when the filters needed to be changed.

The company suggest changing the filter every 6 to 8 weeks, but here where we live we had to change it every 4 weeks and during really bad allergy season every 3 weeks,

I second PoolMama. We now have the whole house ventilation system that also regulates humidity and it was professionally installed. It wasn't cheap. We never had much luck with the round, portable ones that you need to change filters. The filters clogged and the units broke. I've heard to avoid the inonization ones.

I do not know which brand is the best, but expect to spend some $... I bought one for my daughters room because she kept getting sick and I was worried about pests in the walls... so I went to walmart and it cost $130... I did see a few for a little less and several for much more! And that was walmart, not sure about the other chain stores.. also you need to keep in mind the cost of filters if they need to be replaced or how often they need to be changed out. Good luck!
