My suggestions, due to potential allergenic affects, is to use nothing. Maybe crack a window mid-day for awhile. At the most, I use a wickless candle that I plug in -- it is wax just like a normal candle, called a melter.

The plug-ins can be so overpowering! Aerosols can damage lungs.

If you have carpet, sprinkle a little baking soda on the floor and vacuum it. It really makes it smell fresh and is pet and child friendly.

Freshwave is made locally and sold at Ace Hardware and Whole Foods, Fruitful Yield and other health food/natural food stores. THeir gel container and spray are both safe to use and not made w/harmful chemicals. I love their scent, it doesn't linger since it's made w/essential oils like cedar etc.

Scentsy wickless candles are a great alternative! They use a 25 watt lightbulb to warm scented wax to just above body temperature, so there is never any risk of fire or injury! Check out my website at www.cgreenlee.scentsy.us Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have!

Essential oils are great. I use them in the humidifer's now. There are some that are not safe, so you have to do a bit of research. I use: http://www.aromandina.com

good luck!

I have seen air freshener gels that should work well. They come in a jar. You just leave the lid off and it absorbs smells. They sell them at bed bath and beyond and elsewhere I am sure. Oftentimes they are marketted toward pet owners...

Essential oils work great with a diffuser. Just make sure they are good quality such as miessence or young living. Plus it has great health benefits.

My actual advice is to use nothing. If you feel it is absolutely a need then I would get essential.oils from a good health food store and put just a few drops on a cotton ball and place it in a teacup on your stovetop or a place where it gets. Warm in your home. The reed diffusers can be spilled by a curious child and stain. Candles that have strong scents that you could open one per room of the same scent without burning, baking soda placed in cups in high places such as tops of fridge or bookshelves. As any powdery residue on the hands when baby is tired gets rubbed into eyes and hurts. A fabric softener sheet placed on the inside of a furnace vent in a bathroom or laundry room.

I have one jar candle that I keep on my stove (take it off when you use the oven--or it will melt) Your one year old already knows that the stove is hot (or at least you are teaching he/r that) I don't lite it often but when I do that is where I put it.

The Odor ban may sound like a strange thing to put in a babies room but it really works. You just pull the top open and sit on a shelf and absorbs odors. The same with the crystals. We had an issue in the basement at our old house and it was not a pet issue. We used the odor ban and it absorbed the odor great.
there is other brands that do the somethings at different stores. That have nothing to do with aerosols, candles or plug ins.

Hi V.,

I sell wickless candles which require an outlet. The warmers slowly melt the wax which releases the scent of your choice. The wax never gets hot enough to burn and it is a paraffin wax. I have a three year old and one on the way, so I was just as concerned as you. I feel that this was the safest alternative to candles. I hope this helps!

Have you been to the Green Home Experts in Oak Park. Maria the owner could direct you in a fabulous direction in that regard. I'm not sure if METHOD brand products has an air freshener but that would also be a good brand to check out. She has a web site

Unfortunately, air fresheners, aerosoles, plug-ins and candles are all carcinogenic and very bad for babies-- they pollute the air with dangerous chemicals. Try a room air purifier, baking soda and vinegar to clean. Other ideas can be found on "green" websites.
