Advice on a Part-time Summer Job

I am a teacher in my late 30s with two young boys. Since I will be off this summer and I would like some extra income, I was thinking that it might be nice to have a part-time job. Since I have two children of my own, the only job I think I could have would be something like a babysitter or nanny. I have never done this officially since I have had my own children, but I have extensive experience with children babysitting since I turned 13, working with children in schools as a teacher's helper since I was 16, and working as a certificated teacher since 1998. I am currently a Special Education Teacher and also a Camp Fire leader and substitute German teacher, so all of my background checks and certificates are up to date. How would I go about finding a part-time nanny job and getting paid? I looked on care.com and sittercity.com, but they asked for how long I have been a nanny with references which I do not have since I have never nannied before. Does anyone have some advice for me? Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

I would think you could make a lot more money with a lot less effort by tutoring a few kids over the summer. I pay my daughters's tutor $40/hour and I drive to her house.

A teacher at my son's school tutors at her home over the summers. She makes her own hours and is super busy!

Check with your local YMCA. They always have a summer camp, and look for teachers and staff to work over the summer to watch kids while they're not in school.

I would put an ad up at your childrens school now, as this is when parents are starting to make their summer day care/day camp arrangments. Ideally you could provide care for one or two of your childrens friends and that way you get paid to have full time playmates for your kids. You could also apply at the YMCA or other fitness centers/gyms that have child care, that wouldn't mind you bringing your own kids to work with you. I don't know how it works there, but here you can only make so much money before it affects your summer unemployment, so make sure you know how much you are allowed to make. I'm sure those places asking for nanny references would be fine with teaching/Camp Fire leader references as well.

My first impression is that someone would not want to hire a nanny just for 3 months unless, they had a special situation.

With your background, you could also tutor, work with parks and rec for the summer camps.

Academic tutors get $50/hr cash around here and a LOT of teachers tutor in the summer.

The guidance counselors at the schools know who tutors and what they tutor. They tend to be the reference point for parents who are looking for tutors as well as other teacher peers at the school.

Best wishes.

The idea of a summer camp is a good one. Also, there are preschools that have summer programs that are outdoor programs that mirror mothers morning out programs - they're just outside instead of in the classrooms. You can work part time and not have children coming into your home.

I'd call all the churches in your area that have preschools and ask them if they have summer programs. Tell them you're looking to work for the summer, and if they seem interested, ask them if you can come in and interview. After you meet them, then tell them that you have children you want to bring and see what they say. Make sure you get them interested in your qualifications before you mention bringing kids.

Good luck!

Find a school that has a summer camp and you can work and take your kids free.
