Acne and Mini-Pill - Other Forms of BC Better? IUD??

Hi!
After having 2 kids, I'm not looking to get pregnant again.
Due to health reasons, I cannot be on regular birth control - only the mini-pill or nothing...

I've been taking it for about 4 months and my skin is a complete mess!! I thought it may be because I had stopped nursing...but I'm now thinking it has to be the Nora-BE mini pill that I'm currently on.
I had gone to a dermatologist and got new skin care products, but after 2 months, it's not making a difference...

My question is - what birth control methods control or reduce acne? Without the birth control, my skin is fine.
I'm contemplating the IUD, but does it cause/increase acne?

I'd love to hear your opinions...
Thank you!

So What Happened?

Ugh - I can't really decide so it may be best to use nothing anyways...
I'm too freaked out with the pros/cons to using the IUD's...

Has anyone tried diaphrams or cervical caps - easy or messy to use???

I have the Mirena IUD. I have not had any issues with acne worsening since I had it inserted. I have issues just before I get my period, always have. I use Proactive Solutions, it really does work. I still get the acne about a week before, but the proactive works to contain it and not get any worse. The mini pill may not help with the acne because of the different hormones in it.

Is your partner/husband dead set against a vasectomy? That is what we did in the same situation and it was the best choice we ever made.

I took NORA-BE mini pill for 13 months while I was breastfeeding my baby. And one month before I stopped breasfeeding her I got problems with my skin. And as you said it has to be NORA-BE. I never had problems with my skin when I was a teenager, before or during my pregancy and just of nowhere I am in big problems. No one in my family have had acne, my aunts cousins they breastfeed their kids too and they are perfectly fine. I had a very nice pregnancy no vomits, nausea, I was just with 28 pounds more in my body but really happy and healthy. I dont think is because of breastfeeing it is because all those sintetic hormones I wish I could have thought about a IUD as a first option!

Hi A.,
I would try NFP Natural Family Planning it's 99.99% effective done right, easy and no chemicals. All BC have side effects... IUD, risk of ectopic pregnancy remained elevated for many years after the device was removed. Ectopic pregnancy remains the leading cause of maternal death in the United States. The IUD may also cause back aches, cramping, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual cycles), and infertility.

I got that from this website http://www.omsoul.com/contraception-side-effects.php All birth control have side effects, and are very scary, but of course those pharmisudical companies don't want you to know about them, how else would they make money? Good luck, God Bless!

If your skin is fine with no BC, what about a copper IUD? Unlike the Mirena, there are absolutely no hormones. The only drawback I've had is that my periods have actually been a little bit heavier since getting on it, but the IUD lasts for 10 years (vs 5 years of Mirena). And I too was worried about my insurance not paying for it (figuring out the break even point of paying myself was 2 yrs), but then I discovered they did pay for it so don't assume they won't.

I am on the Mirena IUD for the second time and I don't think it has made my acne any better or any worse. However, I stopped breastfeeding about 2 months ago and also noticed that I have had more acne since. I had the IUD put in last March after having my son. I think the breastfeeding definitely helped and now thats over.

The mini-pill is not as effective of a birth control than other hormonal alternatives. So, you should probably switch to a more reliable, long-term method (Mirena or Paragard IUDs or Implanon). The Mirena IUS has a progesterone-like hormone (levonorgestrol) and I have had it in place for 6 months. I noticed that my acne was worse for the first few months postpartum (probably due to the hormone changes after pregnancy), but is not as bad now. I do not think that the Mirena is causing any acne.

I am no longer breastfeeding and my acne is not worse.

Yasmin or Yaz really helped me before pregnancy as oral birth control. But both contain estrogen.

Good Luck!

I loved my Mirena. (A type of IUD.) No major side effects, except for a much lighter period. (I barely even got mine- it was great!) I had pretty big problems with the different pills I tried, but with the Mirena I didn't have increased acne, weight gain, or any of the crazy mood swings.

The big downside of the Mirena is cost. Many insurance companies won't cover it, and it is very expensive! It's only worth spending the money if you aren't looking to get pregnant for at least 2-3 years. I had mine for a year before we decided to remove it and start trying again, and it wasn't very cost effective. I probably would have made another choice, if I had known we were going to try so soon.

But when it comes to birth control, it's definitely my method of choice!

Hey A.,

Are you saying you are finished having kids, or just not ready now? Because if you feel your family is complete and are looking for a more permanent solution have you considered your husband having a vasectomy? It really is so much easier on us women especially if you have medical problems it might be easier for him to take care of business so you don't have to. My husband had one and believe me it was so easy, no complications, one day of bed rest and that was it. After all we carry the babies, deliver them and deal with women issues all of the time I think a vasectomy is the least they can do. I am sure in your case any type of hormones is what is making you break out so if you could stop all birth control I think this could be the answer. Unless you are not sure if you want more kids down the line. If you do then I think Yaz is a low dose birth control pill and one of the good features is acne control I would check with your doctor. Good luck!!

I was told the IUD still releases hormones similar to the regular pills.

If your skin is better when you are not on birth control, get the Paragard IUD. It does NOT have any hormones. The Mirena IUD DOES have hormones. I had the Paragard twice in my life, and it worked just fine.
