I know this is a longshot, but I am kind of grasping at straws here.
I posted a short while back about getting a puppy. We have tentatively decided on a Puggle (pug.beagle mix), but I cannot find one within a 2 hour vicinity of our home to save my life. More like 3 hrs. and upward, and we really don't want to have to make an overnight trip just to pick up a puppy, but we want my son to be able to spend a little time with the dog, to make sure he isn't allergic... The bulk of the Puggles we've found in that 3 hr. + travel range are in the Lancaster, PA area, and I've been warned that that area is notorious for puppy mills, which explains why I keep finding an abundance of them there (and nowhere else)... so even though we LOVE Lancaster, PA (had our little honeymoon there), we will not be getting a puppy there.
Does anyone know where we can find Puggles in Pittsburgh, PA area (we are actually about an hour south of Pittsburgh, so the borders of WV, OH, and MD would be ok too)? Trust me, we've EXHAUSTIVELY searched the internet, and looked at link, beyond link, beyond link... and cannot find a single lead in this area.
Just hoping that by some weird stroke of luck, someone on this site might be able to help!

We are not opposed to rescues. My best dog ever was a rescue. But we've had others with not-so-nice temperaments that were rescuse also. We are trying to do our research this time, with having 2 kids to think of. All of our research indicates that puggles are exactly what we are looking for, considering size, temperament, intelligence, playfulness, obedience, etc. With rescues, you just never know what you are getting, and although that often works out for the best, in my experience, it can go the other way too. Two of our rescues actually bit ME, the owner. Can't risk that with babies... I know, you can never trust ANY dog 100%, but at least with pure breeds, or "designer breeds" you have something to go on, whereas mixed breeds from the pound are a total guess.
Maybe this whole puggle designer dog isn't meant to be. Could I ask you to consider a rescue or shelter for a dog locally? They have made the best pets for me.
We got our last two dogs from the animal shelter. They were about a year old. They were about 90% housebroken. My kids got chance to play with them before our adopting them to make sure they were a match.
I would suggest an animal shelter, even if you end up something that isn't the "perfect " puggle.

Try visiting some local vet offices and animal hospitals. Often the folks there know when and where puppies become available, and they can point you in the direction of a responsible breeder. Good luck!

No real advice on my end...but I do hope you find your perfect puppy companion, and hope you are feeling great!
Im not sure about the spca in your area but here the animals are temperament tested before becoming Adoptable. Also the staff is knowledgeable about which dogs are good with kids. Personally I think designer breeds are silly. When you mix two dogs you could get traits from either one. The best guarantee is good consistent training.
Have you tried the Portuguese Water Dog?

My friends just got a puggle. Cute dog. Of course, they drove a couple hours somewhere in Texas to get her. I think the idea of calling local vets or animal hospitals sounds best. Perphaps craigslist ??
there are people giving away puggle puppies on bucks county freecycle....on yahoogroups, quite a drive but maybe worth it for a trip and free pup. Also J. a side warning, if you have kids uner 6 I'd hold off, we got a puppy from lancaster when my daughter was 3, and she had always beena round dogs, the puppy jumped up and nipped her and caught her lip and it was really bad she needed multiple stitches from an 8 week old pup
You may have already tried this site, but have you looked on www.petfinder.com? You can put in your zip code and check to see if there are any rescue leagues or breeders in your area. I would also call and ask your local humane societies to let you know if any dogs of this breed come in. Check your local newspapers, try those ads that people put up in grocery stores, hardware stores, and pet stores. Check pet stores too. Call some of the bigger vet offices too and see what they say. You may get lucky:)
