OK Moms, I need some help calming my stress!! Yesturday baby had a small fever of 99. I chalked it up to teething (she has 1 tooth so I figured the next was coming in) gave her some Tylonal and sent her to daycare. I even called at 230 yesturday to check in on her. They said she was great. At 430, they called me and said she had a 101 fever and I had to get her. No problem. I got home, gave her motrin and then another shot of Tylonal before bed at 730.
WHILE I was at daycare, they were telling me that they are sending EVERYONE home with even a tiny fever because alot of kids have been getting fevers and they dont know why (alot more than normal at least) the local highschool has about 33% or more of the school out because of illnesses. This whole swine flu/flu season has me all freaked about.
OK so this morning, she woke up kind of hot again. I took her temp in the rear and it said 100. I kept her home from daycare and my husband is home with her for today. (thank goodness he just happend to be off)
He put her down because she was cranky at 850 and she slept for 2.5 hours (that is WAAAY more than normal)
She just woke up and he said she still feels a little warm. I told him to give her tylonal. She seems to be in a good mood and is babbling as I am typing this. He said she is looking better than this morning
She has a doc appt on monday for a follow up from a lingering ear infection so I would hate to bring her in today if I dont need to. Plus whenever I call the doctor, It seems liek they never want to see her unless she is above 102 AND is not eating. She is eating less, but she is still eating and has wet and dirty diapers.
Am I just being a paniced mom but I am worried about the flu with her and I dont know what to do IF she has it. I need advice? could she have the flu
OH AND BTW the hubby and I have colds..but we are really stuffed up..she sounds really clear

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi All, Man I love this site for all the support I get. I waited until Monday for her regular follow up appt. She had a fever all weekend, but was fine on Sunday and Monday morning, so I brought her back to daycare. When I picked her up at 330 she felt hot to me. The doc took her temp at 102. After checking her out, she still has an ear infection but no too bad. I told him my concern for her hearing and he has referred me to the Dr Myer who is associated with Childrens hospital for her to be evaluated for tubes. I called on Tuesday morning (10/06) and the first available appt is 10/29. WOW. Haley is now on more antibiotics (Amox-clav) and it seems to be working. I just hope I can keep the infection gone before the 29th
Thanks again for all the advice

I would suggest that you take the baby to the er if the babies doctor has a problem seeing her. Childrens hospital is a wonderful hospital for kids.

I think that, given that it's the beginning of flu season and we have the whole H1N1 flu things going on, you aren't being panicky, but cautious and observant.

I would take her in, only because if it were the H1N1 virus, she is in the high risk for complications group due to her age, and they can test her and see for sure. Plus if you have them check her ears today, she won't need to go on Monday, so it's still one visit.

My husband just sent me a pamphlet from base for things to watch for so I will give them too you:

fast breathing, blue or grayish skin color, not drinking enough fluids, severe or persistent vomitting, not waking up or reacting, being so irritable that the child doesn't want to be help, flu symptoms improve and then return with fever or worse cough.

To treat her at home you would need to:

push lots of fluids and tylenol

hope this helps

When we had our oldest in a daycare, they were really fickle about kids getting a slight fever, because they're right - if your kid comes in there sick, everybody else is going to get sick - the caregivers are going to give it to each other and all the other kids will get sick too. They had a real severe case of Hand/Foot/Mouth run through there over the course of about 3 weeks, and just about everybody was out (home) because of it!

I think they're being overly cautious to some degree especially since we know that teething can cause a fever, but I guess they can't be too sure.

My oldest is now in kindergarten this year, and Monday and Tuesday, we kept her home because she had a fever (Monday's was worse than Tuesday, but we didn't want to chance it). WHen I called Tuesday to say we were keeping her home because she still had a low grade fever (99.7) and we wanted to make sure she was better before sending her back, they said, "THANK YOU!! There's something going around, and we don't know what it is." Wednesday morning, the news reported her school as having an unordinarily high absentee rate due to flu-like symptoms. She only had a fever and loss of appetite on Monday, but okay.

Anyway, I'd probably see if it can hold off until Monday. My ped's office sometimes sounds "wierd" when I call too, but I figure that's what I'm paying htem for. Usually it isn't just that I've called, but they've likely gotten a slew of other calls from other concerned parents too. SO keep in mind, it's probably not you personally, just that they've been getting lots of calls from other people about the same thing.

Unless she's throwing up, she probably doesn't have the flu. The fact that she's willing to still eat/drink is a good sign, and that she's "filling her pants well" too.

Keep up with the tylenol and/or motrin. You might also go get the Orajel Swabs - they work GREAT too (until the motrin or tylenol kick in).

Just my thoughts....for what it's worth - and good luck!

The biggest clue that tells me she is ok is that she is not acting sick. If she had the flu, she would hardly have any energy and would not be in a good mood. How high or low her fever is is not always the case. It is how they are acting. As long as she is not acting lethargic, in pain and she is eating and staying hydrated, I would say it is ok to wait until Monday. Her ear infection could be coming back, who knows.

Just take her in on Monday.....unless her fever is over 101 and she is not eating as your doctor says.
Relax, you are keeping an eye on her and that is what is important.

She probably has something. If it was the flu she would be worse, nausea, vomiting and diarreah. I would not doubt if she runs a fever for a few days and then breaks out in a rash. (roseola). My one son had it and the other one didn't but if she around alot of othe kids her age then she probably has it. Also if it was an ear infection she will usually not eat or drink as swallowing increases the pain.

As long as she is still eating (albeit less), making wet diapers, and the tylenol and motrin are taking care of the fever, she is probably fine. I mean, she probably has a small virus, but all the ped will tell you is to push the fluids. Fluids and pain meds are all that you can do for the flu anyway. I would also keep her home, away from others and other kids for as long as she has the fever. 24 hours without fever and she can go back to daycare.

If she is still feverish and sleeping a lot by her appt. on Monday, then tell them.

YOu are just a mom with a baby with their first fever....happens to all of us.

Take her to the doctor. If she wa laredy fighrting an ear infection and has now had a fever ove 100 for a few days - what are you waiting for? The doctor should be able to do the follow-up stuff while you're there so you don't have to go back.

L.,

it sounds like she just has a cold, with the flu they would lay around not want to eat or drink, not have dirty diapers and could have a cough it effects the lungs that is what makes everyone so sick! it could also still be her ears flaring back up. and doctors dont like to see them before it hits 102. but if you want to be seen you can demand to be seen, you do pay them, with out you they would not get money...but i bet it is only a virus that she has caught and will go away in time, keep giving the motrin then tyl four hrs after that it should break

Push the fluids to ensure she is stYing hydrated and keep an eye on her. If her temp jumps up to 102 then give the doc a call. Otherwise, just keep your Monday apt. Even at 101, it isn't that bad. Have you considered she is cutting a tooth? My daughter always ran a low grade fever.... 99-101 with every tooth she cut.

What you're describing doesn't sound like any cause for alarm. Keep a close watch and see how the weekend goes.
