7 Month Old Has Odd Symptoms All of a Sudden, Crying After He Eats

Today my 7 month old son started getting sick (I think). He has been drinking formula for 7 days now as I have just weaned him off of breast milk. He has had no issues with it at all this whole week. But after his first feeding today, he started grunting and crying like he was trying to go poop but couldnt. I tried juice, rubbing his tummy etc and then he finally went. He seemed out of it still, he just wanted to be held. He then took a nap and seemed okay until his next feeding, the same thing happened. He started crying like he was in a lot of pain and pooped again. This has been happening all day long, he has gone about 5 times today already. Its not loose, it seems normal to me. I just noticed that he has a slight fever of 99.2. He is also teething, but I dont think teething would cause all this right? He also just started getting a little cough last night and just now also I noticed a little runny nose.

I am just not sure whats going on with him. Could he not be reacted well to the formula? Would it take this long for him to show some symptoms towards it? Or maybe he just caught a bug? A while after he poops, he seems to feel a lot better. Anyone ever experience teething issues like this? I feel bad giving him his next feeding if this is whats going to happen...

What can I do next?

I would go back to breastfeeding. If, for whatever reason you can't or won't, try a different type of formula. Perhaps his pediatrician can help with that.

The same thing happened to a baby who comes to my daycare. He has been on foods for a while and a new formula for about one month. He started having symptoms just like your son and a low grade fever. Mom took him to the doctor he said it was a 24 hour stomach bug not the food or the formula. Her doc said it wouldn't have taken that long for the food to give a reaction. He was better the next day. If it continues over 24 hours then I would say check with the doctor. When you went to the formula did you do a combination of breastmilk and formula so his body could slowly adjust. When I went to whole milk at a year old with my kids I did it gradually over a few weeks so their system could adjust.

Maybe you should call the pediatrician about the fever and runny nose, it could be an ear infection, and it often is in kids this age when they change eating habits. Also, trying to "latch on" to a bottle of formula is much different from latching on to the breast, so perhaps he is having a hard time with it. He could be sucking too much air while he eats, and giving himself terrible gas in the process. Make sure there are no air bubbles in his formula bottle, that his nipple is on there good and tight. Burp him often. Good luck!

Try beginning breast feeding again. Look up formulas on Weston A Price Foundation.org. Soy formulas will really mess up the intestines first because of processing and also from the genetically modified seed. It is bad stuff. So are formulas Also look on Le Leche League. I think I heard about the processing of formulas from them.
He is still a baby and needs breast milk to have strong body bones and organs. He gets immune building nutrients from you too. It is also important to not use the bottle and use the nipple for his teeth and facial bone structure which can lead to asthma and other allergies that in itself! So many reasons to continue breast feeding. Kids today are not healthy Make yours the exception.

Is there any chance he's teething? My kids wouldn't eat, wanted to be held and had all kind of uncertain symptoms. Does he have his finger in his mouth? Drool? -www.weelicious.com

Our son had the exact same issues from formula which was the result of colic, caused by drinking certain brands of formula. We tried so many types and the one that worked best was the one the hospital gave him starting at birth since I was unable to breastfeed. It's called NUTRAMIGEN and you can find it at Target, Walmart, Ralph's grocery store and many other stores. It is specifically to prevent the problems your son is having. My son's dad is an ER nurse and also agrees..try Nutramigen for a few days. I am sure it will help. We kept our son on it until he was about one year old, even after he started eating solid foods, and if he ever got constipated with pain in pooping, we'd just increase his Nutramigen intake and it immediately put him back on track.

Hi M.,

Well with my experience with my children (which I breastfed all 5 of them), some of them took time to get used to being weaned and to start feeding of off the formula (especially difficult since your baby is 7 months old and his been breastfed from birth up until now). You can try this, as I did to wean my 8 month old daughter at the time when I got a job to start working with the bank. Try alternating your breastmilk and the bottle durimg the day and when you come back from work (if you do work). This might ease the stomach pain your baby is feeling everytime he's done feeding off the formula. What I did was during the day, I have my mom feed my daughter with baby formula and when I come from work, I would feed her with my breastmilk and then alternate with the formula again. But during bedtime, I just feed her with breastmilk and do the same routine the next day again. His stomach will get trained and the pain will not be as bad as it is now when he tries to poop. As for the fever, cough and runny nose, it could be just from his teething since this is the average ages when infants start to grow their teeth.

after i weaning my daughter off breast milk she had a little problem with her stomach so i started to dilute her formula and put karo syrup in for every feeding i started to notice that she was feeling better after she would eat.

as for him having a running nose and cough and fever this can all be because he is teething. they are all natural to have all 4 of my oldest went thru and i always thought they were sick but after a few days and buying teething tablets it went away. i wouldnt really worry bout it unless its goes over 101.0 then he might be catchng an ear infection...

My suggestion is you put him back on breastmilk. It is the absolute best for your baby and is incredibly easy (the easiest) to digest. It is NOT too late for you to continue to breastfeed, either! There are MANY MANY ways for you to up your supply again for your baby. Fenugreek, Mother's Milk Tea among a few others - check out this site, www.kellymom.com

Good luck!

Yes, it can take this long for symptoms to appear. That is why "they" say that you should introduce a new food for 5 days before introducing another one. It takes more than 7 exposures sometimes (and then sometimes, it is instantly). His digestive troubles are definitely a symptom of an intolerance. This is really tough because now you don't know what to give him for his main source of nourishment. I would go to the health food store and find the most non-allergenic formula that you can find and start there. Feed him that for a couple of weeks. If he gets better than you can stick with that or else work your way down the spectrum to find a formula that fits your budget as well as his tummy. good luck

Is there a way to get him back on breast milk too see if it is the formula.

To me it sounds like there is definitely something his is responding to.

Are you giving ANY foods during this time? There could be a food intolerance going on.

if he is getting sick, could the crying be due to a need for extra sleep? Is it possible, after he has eaten and is up fopr a while, he needs a nap?

Call your doc! Thats what I did and found out I had to switch formula bc my daughter was lactose senstive, it took her near a week to show any signs! The fever is normal with a cold/teething. It could be something else though so I suggest you call your doc and ask him what you need to do... Good luck and I hope your little man gets feeling better!----------Ash
