Could he be allergic to something on his head? What does his skin look like? My daughter would scratch her face sometimes, we just kept her fingernails clipped and socks on her hands, they're not as warm as gloves. He also could have cradle cap. As for the gas, you could just give him gas drops when he eats. Some adults have to do that anyway, but do you think he's lactose intolerant? My daughter was pretty much mostly formula till she was a year old, with maybe a few bites of real food a day. His body may not be ready for solid foods. Just my two cents. Plus he's a man, you ever known a man without gas? wink

B.,
my dau and son had the problem of gas. you might want to seek a change in the milk he drinks. we had to go to soy for a while. we now drink 2% to keep constipation down. my kids are now 8 and 10.
your baby might have cradle cap which is only dry skin. try lotion on his head.
and keep his nails cut.
hope this helps

I give my daughter gas drops and it helps alot. She gets bad gas because when she nurses at night she is half asleep, and when I pick her up to burp she gets mad and screams until I put her back down. (been doing this since she was about 4 months) so now i just lets her stay sleep, and sometimes slip her a few drops and she sounds like a grown man when she lets it out ;-) Also I never gave her rice cereal, because I heard it gives gas so she's always had oatmeal, and now she also eats mixed grain cereal. My baby always scratches when shes sleepy, so i just keep her nails trimmed. She also came out with alot of hair so from day one I've always put some type of moisturizer in it, even if it was just lotion. And she's never had cradle cap or even dandruff. Hope this helps.

Hi B.! Have you talked to your pediatrician about it? I didn't give my daughter cereal untill she was like 7 mths because the doctor said it would make her constipated. I only give her cereal WITH fruit to help with that issue.

Gas medicine is a must have in quantity for babies! Scratching is quite common especially for kids with ear infection issues etc.

My friend had a baby that had gas issues, spitting up several times a night and ear infections alot, so she started having him sleep at an incline. She used his baby carrier and strapped him in and put it in the crib. He slept much better that way and started getting better.

There are several theories we had as to why this worked, and we believe its because he had allergies. When you lay down your sinuses drain into your stomach and your ears...

My oldest son also had allergies and I kept him on his side at night with a wedge (left is best for digestion). He also had a problem with formula and milk so I got him changed to Soy and he had Soy formula until he was three. He still isn't much of a milk product eater but he can tolerate it in smaller portions now that he is older.

My grandson has eczema and scratches really bad - especially at bedtime. We tried the baby hand mits but because they are so thin that he still scratches so hard that he still makes himself cry. We started putting his socks on his hands and unless they are very thick, he still scratched hard enough to make himself cry and leave scratch marks. What we find that works, is put on mitts or socks but before putting them on, we stuff two cotton balls in them right in front of his fingernails - we then put some white bandage tape around his writs so he can't work them off. When researching Eczema, one article mentioned to also put on knee high cotton socks - didn't mention the tape but if we don't put it on, he works out of them easily. Since the scratching is much worse at night and he's at the developmental age (4 months) he really needs to use his hands for grasping so, we take them off during the day and put them back on when he's going off to sleep and take them off when he wakes up again.
