My 3 Year Old Daughter Suffers from Extreme Eczema.

My son has severe asthma and eczema and he is currently 18 years old. He has suffered with it most of his life. He use to scratch all night too. He would develop impetigo when he was little and it was a mess. He would be sent home from pre-school for it. I started shopping at a company called Melaleuca and the products have helped his condition immensensly. The Tea Tree Oil has been very soothing to his skin in the product line. A friend's son had excema so bad that his skin would crack and bleed. Someone suggested to her to try essential oils in his bath water. A few drops of Rosemary and Lavender oil in his bath in the evenings did the trick. After just a few weeks she was able to totally discontinue use of the perscription lotion that cost $50.00/tube. His only complaint was that he smelled like a GIRL! Your daughter shouldn't mind that! LOL...

My entire family except for myself suffered from eczema,but since I have switched to using all natural products in my home everyone is eczema free. I use this incredible lotion, that is not only good for eczema but is great for normal skin as well. My husband had the most severe case, he had to take shots in the areas that got so infected from scratching. My three daughters ages 8,6,4 all had it also. My 8 year old daughter would get it off and on due to certain reacations. my 6 year old had it pretty bad, especially behind the knee and the back part of her thighs, also in the creases of her arms, opposite of the elbows. My 4 year old just started getting small signs of it when I started applying this lotion so she really did not get plagued with it. With my 8 year old once I started applying the lotion within a week it was gone, with my 6 year old, it took about two weeks, with my husband it took maybe few weeks longer, his was really bad. Here we are 11 months later and none of them have a problem with eczema. My son also had eczema since about 11 months. He was covered from head to toe. We had to give him internal steriods just to give him some relief. We tried all kinds of creams (medicated & natural). The only thing that cured him was his diet. We went to a nutritionist when he was 2 years old. We got off all wheat, dairy, and corn. He cleared up beautifully within 2-3 weeks. It was amazing. I basically kept him on this type of diet until he was school age. He now eats pretty much anything and has small bouts with it, mainly behind his knees and on elbows.
It's not too hard these days with all the choices now for wheat free diets. The nutritionist also put us on some herbs, but I know for a fact that diet is what cured him.
We put him on soy milk (which he still loves), had just turkey & cheese rolls with no bread. he made it through just fine. The nutritionist said that the eczema was a result of the food allergies acting like toxins in his body. His body could only process so much and then spills over and comes out in his skin.

My nephew has severe eczema also. My sister found the best solution for him by changing products in the home. It worked better than any medicine or cream prescribed by the Dr. He would scratch until he bled at times and he has some scarring due to that. She switched all household cleaners, laundry soaps, bath soaps and lotions and creams. The bath soap and lotion made the most dramatic diffeerence and if she ran out of one cleaner and used another until her order came in it would cause a flare-up. Her younger daughter has asthma and has been virtually attack free since converting her home. These products are less expensive than what is available at Wal-mart and toxin free. Hi there. I don't want to overload w/ you advice, but my friend has struggled w/ this in 2 of her kids also. She has found food allergies to be the problem (soy and nuts). If her daughter has any soy at all (even just soy lecithin as a last ingredient in some product) she'll break out again. It has been enormously difficult to cut out all soy and nuts (even things processed in a facility where they use nuts) but if she can stay on top of it the eczema is completely gone. She also rarely uses soap when bathing her and rubs olive oil into her skin as a moisturizer. A previous post suggested that tea tree oil is moisturizing but it is actually very astringent (drying) although it is very effective as an antifungal and antibacterial agent. Great for ringworm and yeasty diaper rashes. Good luck, I know your struggle is very frustrating. On an optimistic note, I think most kids grow out of it; my friend's daughter is much less sensitive to soy and nuts now, and it has only been 2 yrs or so. Okay, I read the posts and I haven't seen any moms post our routine. I live in Houston and I took my son ( 5 months today!) to a dermatologist at Texas Childrens. He didn't have a classic case of eczema- he had serpia (spelling? it is what they call cradle cap of the body they treat it like eczema though)My son was pawing at his face and scratching himself at night and he looked like he had been attacked by a cat. He now has beautiful skin and is super happy! We were told to get vasaline and take some out and put in 2-3 tablespoons of mineral oil in and mix it up. We apply it on him every night. It is very greasy . We bathe him (in the morning) in cetaphil b/c any soap that suds up takes the oils out of the skin and that is just what they need! The doctor also said the non fragrant DOVE was okay. He can only stay in the bath for 10 minutes in lukewarm water. We bought Free & Clear shampoo for his hair. During the day we apply Vanicream to him from head to toe at every other daiper change. You can get the free & clear shampoo and Vanicream at the pharmacy. You have to request it- they can order it for you. It is considered a special over the counter b/c not enough people buy it daily. We keep his room really cool this helps him not get hot and thus itchy. In about 4 days his skin was smooth and his dry itchy patches were gone. He did get 2 RX as well. We apply dermasmooth oil twice a day every other day. He also got an oral anti itch med (given as needed) that we give him 30 minutes before bed, it makes him super sleepy. I know every kiddo is different but maybe some of this can help or you could have your doctor refer you to a dermatologist. Our peditrician tried everything and after a month of no improvement he sent us to a dermatologist. Good Luck!

Shaklee has a product called Optiflora that has been used by babies as young as nine months with great success. One little boy had eczema on his face, and inside his elbows and knees. His ear was so bad that it would bleed when he touched it. Many doctor visits and many creams had not helped. Five days of Optiflora cleared the eczema. Now he takes it once a week or more often if there are signs of a problem. Optiflora is a two part system. First, the powder mixes easily with water and has very little taste. The second part is a tiny pearl which can be mixed into cereal or applesauce.

I myself suffer from eczema. I speculate that it has something to do with the over abundance of yeast in the body and the way the intestines absorb nutrients. Often watching sugar and dairy intake may help reduce eczema. There is an herbal medication that my mother inlaw used for her 3 year old daughter(Sadly I can't remember what it was, but it is out there). Also, Aloe vera will help. I hope you find something that works for your sweetie. Eczema is an awful itch you can't scratch.

My grandson also suffers from eczema. The only thing we have found that works is Arbonne's ABC skin care. It is formulated for babies, but many adults use it. There is a body wash, lotion, and oil. It is pure and safe. The RX are steroids that cause thinning of the skin and shouldn't be used frequently, per the Dr. So, Arbonne has been the answer and really helped our little guy. eczema is an allergic reaction --- to something --- either within her environment (pets, dust, mold, pollen) or something she is eating -- all the topical stuff in the world won't work (unless steroid based which is horrible for her skin and could eventually cause skin cancer) -- stay away from ANY scented laundry detergents-use ones that actually list ingredients that you can pronounce - for example-meyers products or seventh generation -- see a reputable acupuncturist for acupressure and/or allergy elimination techniques (try www.thegojiseed.com )-- it's not a quick fix but will help to fix it for her life -- i've had eczema all my life and this is what i've finally learned (i'm 38 now)

Yes, my two and a half year old has had the same problem. He would wake up crying because of his scratching. I took him to Dr. Randall Schulze, a chiropractor who also offers nutritional advice. He advised to give him fish oil. I was very, very skeptical. But I tried it. He still has dry skin, but he doesn't scratch till he bleeds and he doesn't wake up due to his scratching anymore. And beware that sometimes you'll get a bad batch of fish oil. "Bad" in that it has lost its potency or something in which case she'll go back to scratching. I noticed a dramatic improvement after only 3 or 4 days.

They have lemon and orange flavored fish oil if she won't take the regular stuff.

I am taking my daughter to Dr. Ma at Ma Accupuncture. Her eczema isn't as severe as your daughter's. However, my friend whose daughter had severe eczema took her to Dr. Ma an he was able to clear it using traditional chinese herbs. Good luck.

Thought I would just mention going to the source of her itching/reactions - have you experimented with food allergies (egg, wheat and corn, maybe milk products too) and tried a different laundry soap/softener on her clothese and bed sheets/towels, etc... This is what I have had to do with my son. Interestingly, I used to use Tide free and Wisk and then Downy/Downy free products. I switched to green products - 7th generation, method, etc... and the green stuff broke our skin out - took me forever to figure that out because you think organic is best --- well, not always. Went back to the originals and we are great now.

Also, my son has food allergies and we also think that he is allergic to grass or something outside as his feet have eczema. He also will be up nights itching - the laundry stuff and not giving him certain foods has stopped that thank God. But the feet issue - I am getting him some little sandals for the backyard, etc.. and we'll hope that works.

Also good to consider are her bath products - there are many good allergy-free ones - I love Bert's Bees - the shampoo and wash for babies is so great and smells so good - like honey!

Another idea is to look into alternative health methods - even chiropractic care; if her body is out of alignment, this can cause sensitivities/alleric reactions - we also found this out and it helped. And, you can try homeopathic products - I would call People's Pharmacy and talk to them - you said you have someone helping you but the People's Pharmacy out in the West Lake area has many people that are really wise on babies and kids - their number is ###-###-#### - there are many women there you can talk to. We have not found the homeopathic stuff very successful with our little one but I know many people that sear by that kind of help - worth looking into or just talking with one of these ladies - they are very kind and helpful.

Have you been to an allergist? My son had/has very bad eczema due to food and pet allergies. It is very difficult to control, but we manage it with occasional steroids (topical and oral) and by avoiding allergens the best we can.

My 3 year old son suffers, too. We took him to an allergist for a test b/c he also had a constant runny nose and runny bowels. They linked everything to a dairy allergy. We are 100% dairy free and I have seen a HUGE improvement in his skin and other symptoms. Good luck!

Allergy testing...My 2 year old is allergic to dust mites. Zyrtec, twice daily moisturizing, and protective pillowcases and mattress covers have helped.

I have had eczema since I was an infant. My parents used to bathe me in epsom salt. A beach trip would heal my wounds quickly.I am now in my thirties and only have problems on my legs. The key is not to let the break out occur. I use lotion constantly Keri is probably the best and use it alot. Eczema is dry itchy skin (I used to scratch in my sleep which would cause the open sores)The sores take a while to heal and itch like mad. As a child I would scratch because it would relieve the itch(you can't tell a child not to scratch)then the sores would get bigger and bigger.I found that the ointments work the best and you don't need a whole lot.Now that I am older I rarely have breakouts because I know the changes in my skin and can tell if an area needs ointment. Keep an eye out for rough and dry patches and take care of them before the skin is scratched and opened. The winters are the worst.
