I have a five month old who is teething. Any advice on what would be the best thing to help sooth his gums. I really don't like giving him any medicine. I started giving him the toys that you can put in the freezer for him to chew on. He seems to like those, but they melt so fast. Any advice you moms can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi A., I am a 33 yr old mom with a 16 mo. old son. He started teething around 7 months, and besides those teethers you put in the freezer, ( that he would not hold on his own) he love those plain old teething beads. we also had a little square blanket that had rubber teething corners. That seemed to get him through, and he would chew on those like there was no tommorrow. Also another plus is that they are so easy for him to hold. Well good luck.

A.,

I have used a few things. The first is a baby feeder (mesh net with a handle) which works great. The mesh helps with their teething and the food you put inside tastes good to them. I used frozen bananas and grapes, sweet potatoes or a piece of bread. The other thing that works great is to quarter a frozen bagle and let him chew on that. It stays together for a long time! You could always put the frozen bagle in the mesh bag if you have a feeder.

Good Luck!

I tried frozen bananas but found them too messy...the best thing seemed to be a frozen french fry...not the healthiest thing in the world but they last for quite awhile

Hi A., teething is no breeze, that is for sure, and I understand your reluctance to use meds. There is a great alternative to Orajel in the form of essential oils. Clove oil is very good for teething babies, if it's diluted in olive oil. You can go to https://www.youngliving.org/oils4wellness click on Product line, then Essential Oils, and scroll down to Clove. This purchase would be well worth it. It will do wonders for people of any ages with teeth aches. GL!

Take a small rag (wash cloth), tie it in a knot, wet it (wring it out) and stick it in freezer. Give it to him when it is frozen. The knot gives him something to hold on to (beware he will get wet as it melts)and the texture and cold will soothe his gums.
Also, there are some fantasitc homeopathic teething tablets, you can get them at Wal-Mart or most grocery stores. You can find them with the vitamens. THEY ARE AWESOME and all natural!! They are small (smaller than a pea) white pills that dissolve on their tongue, you can give them a few at a time and they work. Hylands teething tablets!!!!

Try a bottle filled with ice and really cold water. My daughter would not really drink the water, as much as she would knaw on the ice cold nipple. Seemed to help--hope it helps you!!

Hylands teething tablets are wonderful and all natural. If he is really cranky and acts like he is in pain it wouldn't hurt to give him a little infant tylenol every so often.

One thing my daughter loves is drinking ice water. You can either put in a bottle or in my daughter's case (she doesn't drink from the bottle), I bought some of the nuby rubber sippy cups and she sucks on that and it makes her feel much better. You can try the all natural Highlands teething tablets and gel too. Good luck!

try wetting then freezing washcloths, they stay cold longer. my daughter loved chewing on the gum stimulating toothbrushes. also, hylands has great teething tablets that are homeopathic. you can get them at heb, target, peoples etc. i know you don't like the idea of medicine, but it probably will come down to some days needing orajel. medicine isn't my first choice either, but it has been the only thing that helps some days. i don't use the full pea size amount. i use just enough to cover the area with the tooth (maybe 1/4 of the normal dose). if you do use it, make sure you follow the directions. the dr told me not to use it more than the package directions b/c it can make their throat numb and they can choke on food.

Wet one corner of a washcloth and stick it in the freezer. The cold and the texture together feel great for little ones. I used to keep a ziplock with several in the freezer at once.

I understand your desire to avoid medicine - I am the same way. However, if he is having a really bad night, Tylenol is fine and safe to give (check dosing by weight). You both need to be able to get some good sleep!

We also used carrots but not frozen ones. I bought the full size ones, cleaned and cut them into about 3 inch pieces. He also like the teething busquits but they are really sticky so I only gave them to him every so often. There are these baby tooth brush sets that I got from Target or Walmart and he really liked those as well. They are rubber with little nobbies on them. The wash cloth works well too. I used Orajel to give hime some relief. It's topical and I liked the thought of that better. My son had ALL of his teeth by the age of 11 months. He was cutting 2 or 3 at a time.

When my son started teething, my pediatrician told me to freeze a banana and put it in a feeder bag. My son loved it. Not only did it soothe his gums, it tastes good and is good for him. I cut the banana and put the pieces in an icecube tray to freeze. Then, when he needed one, I would just take it out of the freezer and put it in one of the feeder bags. He loved it!

It can take a long time to teeth, so medicine all the time is not a good idea, but I did give my kids motrin when they were particularly painful (especially at night). My youngest just liked ice cubes to suck on. Also, my oldest had a toy that vibrated when she chewed it. I Think we got it at Babies R us.

Hey A.!
I gave both of my kiddos homeopathic teething tablets. You can buy them at the grocery store. They worked great! You can usually find them by the ear drops and other teething gels...

A., I see you live in Houston. Go to Whole Foods, or Central Market and look in the vitamin, supplement area. The folks who work there can guide you to Hyland's little fast dissolving pellets for babies/toddlers for teething. If your child ever has a cold/runny nose, their cell salts work great for that as well. And best of all, no side effects. I also used teething gel applied with a baby toothbrush. Gently rub the gums with the gel on the toothbrush. Light rubbing will rub the medicine into the gums which will be great when it is jaw teeth they are cutting. Then they bite down on the toothbrush instead of your finger!

I loved the mesh feeders (you can find them at Target or BBRU). I would chunk up bananas, put them in a bag, and store them in the freezer when I needed them.

Everything that I tried melted fast or didn't work. I loved the frozen fruit because he gets a healthy snack.

We took all of our old baby washcloths- the small, soft ones- knotted them a couple of times, soaked them in water and put them in the freezer in plastic baggies. They like chewing on them even after they melt. They also are good to use as "Boo Boo packs". My son was addicted to Orajel- it must have made his gums feel so good because he would grab the tube and suck on it if I wasn't careful. It's topical (unless you're drinking it like he tried!) and I used it on all 3 of my kids. A little Tylenol at night really won't hurt if he is miserable.

My baby liked frozen carrots and small (sonic) ice. I used an herbal teething tablet from CVS during the day when she was really fussing! I would give tylenol at night, for none of us are able to handle pain if we don't get some rest (baby or mom)
Peace and best wishes!

You should try teething tablets. They are all natural, and work great!! I have used them on both of my kids! You can find them in the baby section, next to the medicine dropers and finger nail clipper stuff. They are tiny little tablets, and they dissolve so fast, you can try them in your own mouth. They don't numb the mouth at all like oragel does. I have tried them on myself for mouth pain (need to get my wisdom teeth pulled) I was amazed at how fast the teething tablets worked!! Another thing you can try is, to get a washcloth.. get it wet and place it in the freezer. Works great too!

Our neighbor gave our son a blankey with little pices or patches of different textured fabrics all around the edges. he loves it and chews on that alot and most of the time uses that over the teething ring. he used a paci very little only the first month or so. he dosent like them at all. but loves his small blanket...from wal-mart. our pedi told us not to give him anytype of teething bisquets due to choaking. why risk it? also any hard plastic teething ring or rattle might work for him.

Hi A.. I have a 6 month old who is working on his 3rd and 4th teeth and I've found that my son really loves the Biter biscuits. They make a huge mess and you have to make sure to take them away before they get too small (prevent a choking hazard) but they work really well for him. We also have something called a "rasberry". It's like a pacifer but with little bumps on it(it really looks like a rasberry). We bought it at HEB,the only place I've been able to find it. He holds it and works it around his gums. Good luck. Teething is such fun!

We massaged our daughter's gums with the thin washcloths you get for your baby. Also, I would wet a corner of a washcloth and then pop it in the freezer. Once the corner was frozen I'd give it to our daughter to chew/suck on. That really seemed to help her the best.

Also, we used the oral gel swabs. It is easier to control than the regular gel. You can put just a tiny dab on the gums that are breaking teeth and it not get all over the mouth.

Good luck!

I loved the Teething Tablets that you can get at Wal-Mart. They are a homeopathic med. Put 2 on the tounge, it dissolves almost instantly. They worked wonders on my son when he was teething. They make tummy tablets for gas and ear drops for earaches, too.

You can give as many as needed and they don't have the wretched taste that Oragel has.

I swear by the Teething Tablets and give them to people as baby shower presents.

A., Congratulations on your baby. I have a 7 month old who has been teething for a while. I too didn't like giving medicine, but on 2 occasions, he was so fussy, I gave him some Baby Orajel and it really helped. Be careful not to use it too often, but on really bad moments where nothing helps, I would try a tiny amount. Another thing that helps is something silver to suck on. Silver baby rings or rattle. They stay cooler longer. Good luck.
