Good Morning Ladies,

I was wondering what suggestions were out there to help my 5 month old with his constipation. I am now giving him prunes. I have tried pears. I haven't done the juice yet but will when I go out later. He is on Similac Isomil which is soy formula. I am at my wits end. I have tried sugar water, worked once. Stopped since because I hate the idea of giving him sugar like that and it not doing the trick. I have given him plain water, as well. I am planning to introduce sweet potatoes his diet. I heard that can help as well.

What have you tried? How long did it take to work?

Thank you for your suggestions..
M.

So What Happened?

I have incorporated apple/prune juice into his diet, so far nothing. I am going to give it a few more days and see the pediatrician to see where to go from here. I am going to try a few more..and see.

Thank you for your suggestions...

100% white grape juice worked great for my daughter. I also have to use the premixed formula when I did powder she would stay constipated. But definitely try the juice before anything drastic.

My daughter had severe constipation problems. We even had one trip to the ER. Our gastro specialist put her on a small dose of Miralax. That helped a lot . I wouldn't start that though until u get ok from pediatrician. I was worried we would have a difficult time weaning her off of it, but didn't have much trouble at all. Yogurt has helped, too.

I had the same issue with my son. He has seen a chiropractor since he was 9 days old. We ended up seeing a gastroenterologist and putting him on Miralax at 6 months old. He had developed fistulas due to his constipation. The gastroenterologist said that they learn very early that is hurts to poop and they will actually hold it in and making the constipation worse. My son was turning beet red and grunting when he went. We thought he was straining to go, but in reality he was straining to hold it in. He is now 15 months old and takes 1/3 to 1/2 cap full of Miralax in his juice daily. It works great! The fistulas have healed and he no longer grunts or turns red when going. He goes daily or every other day. The goal is to keep it pudding consistency. Talk to your pediatrician. We did do some blood work to rule out any thyroid issues, but that was all very normal. Best of Luck!

My daughter is on soy formula too and I give her oatmeal cereal at least once a day and try to limit giving her bananas, that seams to work she goes at least once a day. My oldest was on soy as well and nothing worked for her, she would go maybe once a day and it would be like pellets. she wasn't bothered by it so i just waited it out. once she started eating more table food and stopped formula she got better. Good luck!

If this has been an ongoing problem and pears and prunes aren't helping, I would strongly recommend talking with his pediatrician.
Best wishes :)

Sounded like my son at that age. He still has problems but prune juice really does the trick! If he doesn't like the taste mix it with a lil apple juice for taste. My guy never minded though. It works within minutes to hours. I also gave/give him gas drops and they really help too. Lower back massages while he lays on his tummy on your knees will help him push it out too.

Hope this helps! Always did and still does for us :)

My son always responded well to bicycling his legs (him lying on the floor and me kneeling at his feet and holding on to his ankles to do the motions), with also pushing both knees to his chest and doing a little rocking side to side with his knees up, too. I learned the trick from my doula/baby nurse.

I used to make up a story as we were doing it - more for my entertainment that his. Something like an announcer in the Tour de France: "And Lance is coming from the back, watch out there's Jan Ulrich! we're climbing up the toughest of the Great Pyrrenes slopes, and doooooowwwn we go!" It was fun and really worked - usually within 30 minutes or so.
Good Luck!
