5 Month Old Baby with Excessive Gas

My son has excessive gas, he passes gas it seems all day long, he is bottle fed, and I am aware that bottle fed babies have more gas than breast fed, but it seems more excessive than before, he is eating 8oz of milk with 2 tablespoons of oatmeal and one tablespoon of fruit

What can I do next?

Sounds like I was thinking the same as everyone else. I used mylicon drops with all three of my little ones. And food is best with a spoon. In addition to it being easier for them to eat and easier on their stomachs, this is the only way for them to learn to use a spoon. Though is takes more time and is much messier, this will make life much easier for you in the long run.
I hope this helps.

With my two girls I always used a soy based formula and I would add rice baby cereal to the bottle instead of oatmeal, I never had a problem with excessive gas or any type of throwing up. I never added fruit to the bottle, only used that for feedings. If you do make a change I would check with your doctor first. Hope this helps. Good luck!

About the gas...is your child cranky or does he just pass gas?
Gas drops are great. Also do you give you baby the rice with a spoon or just in the bottle?

Hi M.,
Since he is so young, you may want to feed him the food opposed to putting it in the bottle. He may be constipated and it can hurt his tummy. I wouldn't recommend putting oatmeal in the bottle especially if he falls asleep w/it, he may choke.

As for the bottle, you may want to try a Dr. Brown's bottle. It worked wonders for us for two of our kids. I hope this helps! :)

I just think you need to change the formula to soy formula. I am with everybody else you should not put the food in the bottle. It is better it comes out then he hold it in and his stomach hurts. Good Luck to you.

I agree with the post about using massage to help alleviate the gas pains. However, massaging in the left direction can actually constipate your baby if done too frequently. Massaging to the right (your right, as the baby is laying in front of you) will aid in the digestion process and help him pass the gas less painfully.Massage to the right follows the digestive track and can help with constipation. Massage to the left, can help stop diarrhea. Please note you should do these both with extreme care and only when needed. You don't want to overstimulate the baby's delicate system.

It's better that baby passes the gas rather than keeping it all bottled up inside. :) He may be stinky, but he'll be happier.

Hey I just signed up on mamasource and I was reading around at what people had written, I have 3 kids and our newest addition is 2 1/2 months old, breast fed but passes gas all the time and let me just say PEEYOU!!hehe
I have no idea what makes her that way (I have tried altering my diet) At first I was concerned but after talking with some friends about it I decided that it was better she was passing the gas instead of having the upset tummy that you get if you can't pass it. A few ladies told me they had to give their children mylacon drops (I am sure I spelt that wrong) because their children were gassy and couldn't pass it!!
Just thought I would put in my 2 cents (hope you don't mind) but I think as long as he/she is able to pass the gas than I would think they are OK!?!? Make any sense??

Hello, my name is J., I am a millitary wife also, we live in Germany. My son is 22 weeks. Now about your sons gas, you said he eats oatmeal and fruit? Do you give it to him in his bottle? Cause if you do that would make lots of sense for him to be so gassey cause he has to suck harder. But if the gas dosen't seem to bother him then it shouldn't be a big deal. Anyway, if you could get back to me and let me know if I helped at all that would be great. I just joined this group and am trying to figure it all out still.
Thanks, J.
